I subscribed to you recently as it's kind of cool to see you checking out all these different sports. I always like seeing a rugby player's perspective of certain collision sports in the US, but it's always interesting to me when someone from another country checks out bullriding because it's such a weird little niche thing here. I grew up in an area where that was the only way out for a lot of kids; to become a rodeo person. I would never do it myself because I feel like it's a really good way to either be old before your time or die young, however it is fascinating how people get it down to a science.
huge respect to you as well, I have seen bronc riding (my daughter is horse crazy and showed me as she watches a show called Heartland). Takes courage and heart so fair play!! Great Beard as well!!!
Legend has it that the sport was invented in the Old West when two cowboys were looking at bull and one of them said, "I betcha I can ride him longer than you.". A re-ride is given when the bull does something like crash into the gate upon exiting the chute, slams into the railing of the arena, loses it's footing, or stops moving. An awarded re-ride does not have to be taken, but if the rider did not last the full 8 seconds, he will do the re-ride. If you don't stay on for 8 seconds, you don't score. What causes the bull to jump is a rope tied around it just in front of it's hind legs. The rope is cinched down and irritates the bull. He jumps in an effort to get the rope off of him.
I photograph rodeo, but mostly bullriding, and i am in there with them. it's an experience. a reride means that something about the ride didn't give the rider a fair shot, so they are granting him the option of getting on a different bull to hopefully score or improve on his score
Contrary to popular belief, the "flank strap" is not tied around the bulls "treasure". It fastens at the abdomen. Two bulls....Bodacious, the most dangerous bull. He learned that if he threw his head back at just the right time, he could smash his riders face. Then there was Red Rock, the Unridable. During his career, 305 outs (attempted rides) Zero rode him for 8 seconds. He was very intelligent and knew how to off balance his riders. He was then brought out of retirement for the Challenge of Champions - Red Rock vs. Lane Frost. Lane rode him. When Lane was killed after riding Takin Care of Business, Red Rock attended his funeral. He was put back into retirement and the owner would not bring him out of retirement ever again.
A flank strap is not there for the bulls pleasure though is it? I know they are well cared for most of the time but some people act like they aren't tortured for 8-30 sec a night I dont mind the sport but it is what it is no matter how you sugar coat it

rerides mean that the bullrider has the option to ride again to try for a higher score IF HE CHOOSES .This comes up when the bull does something that messes up the ride
tried bull riding when i was about 12 at a local jr rodeo. had to ride twice 'cuz the first bull came out of the chute running and never bucked, the next one went crazy and threw me at 2 seconds. luckily the jr's rode bullocks (yearlings) half the size and temperament of these big boys!
You should check out a bull ned Bodacious. He was forced to retire early because he put too many bull riders in the hospital and into retirement. Several riders were forced to have several major surgeries on their backs and facial reconstruction after just one ride on Bodacious. His owner said he had to retire him early becàuse he was afraid Bodacious was going to kill a cowboy
Rodeos originally started as basic skills competitions, which real working cowboys needed while tending to cattle on a ranch. Calves, unhappy at the prospect of being branded, sometimes need to be roped. Steers sometimes bolt from a herd and need to be taken to ground safely before the herd stampedes by instinct. New colts need to be broken to the saddle in order to be useful mounts... Bull riding, I like to think, started when a bunch of cowboys drank too much whisky and started bragging to each other about how tough they were. While a part of the larger sport of rodeo, Bull Riding is its own thing. In other words, you may see bull riding as a part of a rodeo event. But a bull riding competition without other cowboy disciplines, is not really a rodeo.
You should also check out Best Rides, Worst Wrecks, and Bullfighters. That's what the guys that protect the bull rider are called. All amazing athletes. The best bulls also win competitions and prize money. There are actual bull riding schools that you could react to as well. Other fun things to react to are mutton busting (little kids riding sheep). People are going to tell you that the stock bucks because their genitals are tied up, but that's false. To get a cow or horse to buck they put a flank strap on it which bugs the animal and it tries to buck it off.
Thanks for that, I just thought the bull was irritated with the person on their back I didn't know about the strap. I'll be sure to check out the mutton busting, sounds brilliant

The main goal of bull riders is to survive for 8 seconds on the bull without getting thrown off. Not only the bull rider, but the bull also gets a score, denoting (mostly) how tough he is to ride. From there, you and the bull both get style points and some other points. But, again, the _main_ goal is just to stay on the d**n thing for 8 seconds. Weird little sport.
