    Bodacious
Bodacious #J-31 (1988 - May 16, 2000) was an American bucking bull. He was known throughout the rodeo world as "the world's most dangerous bull". He was also known as "the greatest bull ever to buck, this bull scared all the riders. Look up some clips on that bull.

The bulls are actual competitors whose stats are tracked and compete for their own seperate competition. And they can in fact weigh a ton. When you hear them say "bull score" they are talking about how many points the bull got in that round for his performance.

I always like seeing a rugby player's perspective of certain collision sports in the US, but it's always interesting to me when someone from another country checks out bullriding because it's such a weird little niche thing here. I grew up in an area where that was the only way out for a lot of kids; to become a rodeo person. I would never do it myself because I feel like it's a really good way to either be old before your time or die young, however it is fascinating how people get it down to a science.

Legend has it that the sport was invented in the Old West when two cowboys were looking at bull and one of them said, "I betcha I can ride him longer than you.".
A re-ride is given when the bull does something like crash into the gate upon exiting the chute, slams into the railing of the arena, loses it's footing, or stops moving. An awarded re-ride does not have to be taken, but if the rider did not last the full 8 seconds, he will do the re-ride. If you don't stay on for 8 seconds, you don't score. What causes the bull to jump is a rope tied around it just in front of it's hind legs. The rope is cinched down and irritates the bull. He jumps in an effort to get the rope off of him.

Contrary to popular belief, the "flank strap" is not tied around the bulls "treasure". It fastens at the abdomen. Two bulls....Bodacious, the most dangerous bull. He learned that if he threw his head back at just the right time, he could smash his riders face.
Then there was Red Rock, the Unridable. During his career, 305 outs (attempted rides) Zero rode him for 8 seconds. He was very intelligent and knew how to off balance his riders.
He was then brought out of retirement for the Challenge of Champions - Red Rock vs. Lane Frost. Lane rode him. When Lane was killed after riding Takin Care of Business, Red Rock attended his funeral. He was put back into retirement and the owner would not bring him out of retirement ever again.

Rodeos originally started as basic skills competitions, which real working cowboys needed while tending to cattle on a ranch. Calves, unhappy at the prospect of being branded, sometimes need to be roped. Steers sometimes bolt from a herd and need to be taken to ground safely before the herd stampedes by instinct. New colts need to be broken to the saddle in order to be useful mounts...
Bull riding, I like to think, started when a bunch of cowboys drank too much whisky and started bragging to each other about how tough they were. While a part of the larger sport of rodeo, Bull Riding is its own thing.
In other words, you may see bull riding as a part of a rodeo event. But a bull riding competition without other cowboy disciplines, is not really a rodeo.

People are going to tell you that the stock bucks because their genitals are tied up, but that's false. To get a cow or horse to buck they put a flank strap on it which bugs the animal and it tries to buck it off.

My nephew has some bulls he takes to rodeos and he has one bull that no one has managed to ride yet.

The main goal of bull riders is to survive for 8 seconds on the bull without getting thrown off. Not only the bull rider, but the bull also gets a score, denoting (mostly) how tough he is to ride. From there, you and the bull both get style points and some other points. But, again, the _main_ goal is just to stay on the d**n thing for 8 seconds. Weird little sport.

I used to work some rodeos as a medic. I competed in HS but in steer wrestling and calf roping. Check out Najiah Knight, teen girl bull rider, ranked #7 in the world, at her age she rides mini bulls, Oregon Public Broadcasting has a cool video on her your daughter may enjoy.

Big sport in the US, backed by lots of money and commercial sponsors. Wanna try 8 seconds? 9/10 times you're going to walk away saying ouch! I think I broke something.
