Why not start with blockers right away? Players will never be swinging against a big blue gymanstics pad during a game so why do it at all? I think the drill is great and the more game-like reps the players can get the better.

As a coach, while the blue pad doesn’t make sense, when introducing the drill it provides a sense of consistency for the players to hit around or tool the block. As the drill progresses, definitely replace with blockers as it makes way more sense with game like reps. This drill is also one as you progress you can start with blockers and do without the pad.
it teaches you to hit around the blocks. You always start the drills with something easier, breaking down each action/footwork, and then you transition the drill into a whole other harder drill.
