    I bought this camera a few days ago and this review is spot on. Being able to crop and edit those stupid huge raw files is why you get so many megapix. You just accept that it's a little slow writing them all down.
    Autofocus is sick, gorgeous sharp, great color quality but all that comes with expensive glass.
    Buy it if you got $$$ and lurk for the perfect used. I picked mine up guaranteed used (barely used) from my local camera store

  • @AllenFreemanMediaGuru

    Very good video. I picked mine up in June 2016 and then decided to totally switch over after shooting Nikon for 10 years! Recently sold a ton of Nikon gear so I'll have two A7R2's! I can shoot with one at 28 or 35mm and other at 55 or 85mm. No lens swapping and quick switching. The 28 f/2 and 55 1.8 are nice and small and light! I use the 24-240 on trips and where I can't get closer like tours, zoo, sports. It's amazingly sharp (they all are). Soon will have 90 macro. I simply could not go back to the heavy, less features, Nikons.

  • @irvonovisuals

    The conclusion sold me! I have been using the T3i for 8 years and only have 3 lenses for them and really only use 2. I was Sony curious and when I saw the specs on this thing I was blown away! I would wanna do more video with this rather than the A7S II which doesn't take great photos compared to this. Its a nice combo of photo and video plus a huge upgrade from the t3i I have now. Solid video! Good job!

    Happy to come across this review in 2023. I am looking to find a bargain priced A7R II to use with my small collection of vintage lenses, and also as part of a film scan camera setup

  • @studiodreamken
    @studiodreamken 8 лет назад +1

    Great review! I wish this was something more reviewers talked about with any new camera/lenses/etc. Everyone talks about specs and that's great and all, but it was a huge shock for those of us who end up buying/switching to a different system and realizing that A LOT of things are not as good as it was. I'm also a Canon to Sony convert (though I'm still keeping my 5D3 for stills and some video work) and when I got the A7Sii (my first ever Sony cam) I was appalled by the interface, crappy menus, etc. But still it's got amazing tech and can produce great 4K and slowmo HD video that the 5D3 can't do at all, plus the low light capability is just crazy. I just wish more reviews address these huge issues that Sony has with their user experience and not solely focus on specs. I know we can learn and adapt to Sony's cams but we really shouldn't when every other camera maker has done better.

    • @JasonVong
      @JasonVong  8 лет назад

      Thanks Ken! I'm glad I achieved what I wanted to get across in this review. Definitely keep shooting still with the 5D3, but videos with your a7s II! A killer combo right there!

  • @lawng20
    @lawng20 8 лет назад +1

    This is such a great review, especially when we get to see how the camera is working in real life. You've even touched on native lens selection which will definitely help those who are unfamiliar with the confusing Sony lens lineup. Prior to using my Sony a7, I switched from a Canon 6D because of the improved image quality, good auto focus with subject tracking function and the overall smaller form factor. After shooting for a year with my Sony a7, I eventually came to a spot where I might consider switching back to Canon because of the lenses I like to shoot with. I have my 24mmL f/1.4 L on my Canon 6D for 90% of the time and a 16-35mm f/4 L IS for landscape shots. Although Sony does offer the Zeiss Batis 25mm f/2, their 16-35 f/4 wide angle zoom costs a lot more than my Canon 16-35mm f/4 L IS. If I did had the extra money laying around, any Sony A7 series camera + Sony native lens will be my choice hands down. It's just a matter of whether I'd be willing to ditch out that amount of money to get that much of the improved image quality.

    • @JasonVong
      @JasonVong  8 лет назад

      Thanks for your kind words, Lawrence! I agree, the limiting lens choices, especially affordable ones, is always a constant battle. Couple weeks ago, I saw amazing photos taken with the Sigma Art 20mm 1.4 and man do I wish it was available for e-mount... Absolutely stunning! I don't believe there's an option in that focal length for Sony just yet. Yes, I could adapt it with the MC-11 adapter but I played with one couple weeks ago as well and was disappointed by the AF performance. With that said, I'm definitely looking forward to Sigma's contribution to the E-Mount next year!
      P.S. 6D is an amazing hybrid camera. That was a camera I SERIOUSLY debated about when deciding what'd be my main camera but alas, the a7R II won me over with it's ability to shoot in 4K. I'm excited to see what the 6D Mark II can do though

    • @lawng20
      @lawng20 8 лет назад +1

      I was fortunate enough to own the sigma art 18-35mm f/1.8 and adapt it on my Sony a7 with the mc-11 adapter. It's an apsc lens, hence I did not complain about the image quality at all. But one thing I want to point out, auto focus performance with the sony a7+ Sigma art lens+ mc11 combo is just pain in the ass under low light conditions. In broad daylight, it works fine. There is still evident focus hunting on low contrast objects though. But I do believe a Sony A7ii would offer a much faster auto focus performance when using this combo. Yet, native sony lens is the way to go. I'm definitely excited for the release of the 6d mk ii. Can't wait to see what it brings to the table. In the mean time, keep your videos coming please!

    Regarding the lenses, if you DO need to use those 42 mp, the Zeiss lenses are really worth every penny. ♡♡♡ They are way up there with the old Leitz lenses I use. This camera with a particular 1950s Leitz lens, is second to none when making digital files of 35mm film.

    I’m glad I found this video. I stepped back from FF dslr to Olympus for a lighter rig and love all the bells and whistles but the noise and limited pixels are an issue. Big, clean files and focus peaking are now imperative for me. The biggest drawback for me though which you’ve highlighted in this review is the time lag of files being written on memory card. I’m an anxious person and need to be able to review my work instantaneously lol.

    G'day! First time viewer, really appreciate the user experience view point including demonstrating the AF features from the screen view. Easy to listen to, logical. Sub'd. A7R II is on the wish list still but as a camper/4WDer, low light camp fire shots are important as are action shots of vehicles climbing obstacles. Thinking I need two cameras. $$ :0

    People also don't realise that you're going to have these lenses (good ones anyway) for 5, 10, 15, 20 years if you take care of them. So buy the best you can afford. The more expensive lenses will make a huge difference in the results.

    I spoiled myself and got this camera w/ a 24-70 Zeiss lens two days before summer vacation in July. My previous camera was a Kodak point and shoot , so you can imagine the difference. I used a Pentax SLR in before, during & after my college years, so I was familiar with an SLR. The AF functions make the camera incredibly simple to operate. I experimented with manual mode quite a bit, so I created some interesting effects. Shot a tiny bit of video. Absolutely no problems with battery life so far. Plan to look at a lot of A7ii videos!

    Great review. Looking forward to more. I think you hit the nail on the head with one thing - the best thing about this body to me, and the only reason I would consider buying one, is that you can get Zeiss auto-focus lenses for it. I love Zeiss ZF.2 for my Nikon, but Zeiss offers no auto-focus for the Nikon (or Cannon) mounts. Beg, borrow, or buy the Zeiss Batis lenses, and tell us what you think. Keep up the great reviews!

    I'm about to upgrade my a7s from a a7rii but still hesitating with the a7sii or maybe wait for the a7siii but your video was very informative and i keep thinkin the rii is the best choice for me. User experience is much more useful than just a basic review ! Thank you so much!

    adapters are really a good and fun possibility to have,thats why I bought Sony A7. I starten with onley manual lenses and adapters and it works. Its really something special to shoot with old legacy lenses,but many of them have purple fringing,distortion and so on,and for my type of photography autofocus is really nice to have. The eye focus is one thing that convinced me to buy native lenses and of course sharper lenses wide open and more corrected lenses. The evf is som good,the size of the camera and styrelsen,that there is not camera that can compete with Sony A7 series. Well of course,like you said,its not a fast sport camera.
    Now Im done with adapters and will onley buy native lenses. Maybe in the future adapters will bee better,I had my eyes on Sigma mc-11,but I will buy native lenses instead. Onley problem right now is that there are not native lenses with focal lenght of 300mm+

    I love the EVF. Ever since I started using the A7, I never really have to look back and fourth on my images. I tend to get the exact exposures I want all the time now.

    Great video. Very well presented. I think you pulled me closer to the Sony. I'm starting all over with new equipment. I had a Nikon D90 and some basic kit stuff. The D90 was a great camera. I currently have the A6000 and love it. It's not that great with action shots but good enough. It's either I go back to Nikon with a D500 or wait 1 more month and hopefully get a Sony "a7r3". A video on must buy lens would be good. Thanks again.

      +WolfTau awesome! Definitely waiting on an a7rIII announcement myself! Hmm must buy lenses will depend on what you mostly shoot. These days in finding myself using my 16-35 a lot ! 55 is a definite must have !

    I just got the money to buy one because they are half their price today. This camera is amazing for landscape, portraits, macro, anything but action. It's waaay cheaper than a Leica M10-R and the quality is the same. This a camera to enjoy shooting by carefully choosing your subject. I use it with manual Zeiss lenses (adapted from Canon mount) and the images are breathtaking. Battery life is awful, but batteries are small and cheap these days.

    Hi Jason, great review, i'm still considering the switch from Canon to Sony, I may wait for the Sony A7RII, do you have the option to take photos while filming video? Subscribed and liked! Thanks for the video!

    • @JasonVong
      @JasonVong  7 лет назад

      a6500 has the feature where you can export a frame of a video into a high quality JPEG. I don't think the a7R II can do that.

    I shot with my a7ii with the MC-11 and the Sigma 150-600mm and spent the day mostly at 600mm. I used it for my daughters softball game and it worked better then I thought. I usually use my Canon body but forced myself to try it out and left the Canon at home. It did perform well but would never trade my dslr for any kind of sports.

    Hi Jason, I’m still very new to photography. So I’m watching a lot of you videos for guidance. One of my question for you is, is there an in body stabilizer in the a7r2? Thanks

  • @danmcool69
    @danmcool69 8 лет назад +1

    Hi Jason, you need to update some parts of the review, latest firmware allows lenses like 50L from Canon using the MC-11 to focus faster and more spot on than the 50mm 1.4 FE from Sony on the A7RII.... the same between 135L from Canon and the 85 1.4 FE from Sony.

      @@RubenArroyojesussaves , I bought the camera base on the video of Three Blind Menand An Elephant production. No regrets. The video says this camera is good for 99% of the people 99% of the time, and I agree on that. There are limitations like the smaller battery capacity, the slower burst shooting of 5 frames per second. The less advance af on animal eye. That means for sporys and wildlife, you have a lower keeper rate. But it is is doable if you train yourself in anticipating movements from your subject. And for landscape and portraits , A7R2 is still an excellent choice.

    nice review bro, but the comparing the nifty fifty (which is legendary for it's value) to a high end Zeiss is not really fair, stick to equal or close performers) anyway, being picky, just got back from my first big 2 week shoot with the camera and I agree with you, I shoot landscape so for me I use a metabones adaptor for the my canon mount glass, but I also shoot with some native e mount glass, Keep up the great work!

  • @philindeblanc
    @philindeblanc 8 лет назад

    Billboards don't need large prints as you view them from over a 100 feet distance. But if you need to print large for any display that allows close viewing, Yes you need mpixels! I had a horrible time focusing at night with the 55/1.8 as it kept hunting and not locking. I had an easier time with the Meta/Canon24-70L, and it also allowed for easier manual focus
    What focus mode do you think works best at night in dark situations?
    I agree that On/Off is a bit odd, as you use the wheel in both directions and easy to rem which way for power, I know, weird, but true for me.
    How come no videos so far about the problems, like the night hunt, or the once in a while need to reboot to get the evf to engage, and the odd glitchiness, front or rear wheel getting lag at times? (maybe happens more when swapping around lenses and adapter?)
    Great video! Wonderfully put together! Were you between classes when making this?!

    • @JasonVong
      @JasonVong  8 лет назад

      Hey Phil, thanks for chiming in! I haven't had too many issues with focusing in dark situations. I shot good handful of concerts so far and haven't had any problems but maybe I will pay more attention for this next one I'm shooting.
      I haven't experienced any odd glitches or EVF reboot in which you speak of.
      And don't tell anyone, I actually don't go to school there haha! Wish I did though!

    • @philindeblanc
      @philindeblanc 8 лет назад

      Hey Jason. The one I have was at firmware 3.20, and maybe this had something to do with it. Today I updated the firmware. But concerts have plenty light. I can send you the picture of how low the condition was.
      So this EVF thing may have happened as my fingers fumbled some buttons yesterday. They are easy to press in big hands, without knowing. One other thing I tested today was the 24-70L focus with metaIV adapter, It likes the center spot focus.
      I had moved my focus point a bit above center/center, so it would get focus on eyes, and such, but this lens and area of focus is almost impossible. I have the latest Meta firmware also. I also had just did a manual sensor cleaning. As soon as I put it lower center/center, it had no issue locking focus. I was using single shot for this test. I bet a great usefull video I don't see people cover is the differnet focus modes for differnt lighting or subject situations.
      My 5DM3 had no issue with the shooting in dark situation. my knees got dirty for the LCD, and the files are not so large, but that focusing with the 55/1.8Zeiss was disappointing. Another important observation I noticed; when trying to focus at night, its already hard, but the EVF..as good as it is, can use better contrasting to see what is in focus. So the manual Peaking is very helpful. This will make better sense when in the situation of using the manual focus on FE glass vs manual focus control with switch override from a Canon glass.
      Keep up the great work, and let us know if you have a Meet up of sorts. Cheers!

    2018 and the a7rII can be found for $2000 with battery grip, two extra batteries, and 64 sandisk sdcards. basically the same price for the a7III body only. can´t decide which way to go. eveyone talks about the number of focus point on the a7III, but the bending issues with led light seems a big problem. could you tell me the best one for me? i basically shoot studio portraits, rock concerts, and plays at the teather.

    your video helped me.at least you confirmed my thoughts about lenses and adapters. now I dont have A7rii,I have A7ii and its really a much better camera than A7 I had earlier. I feel just like you about cameras,now I just dont want to have any other cameras than A7ii ore A7rii. The native lenses ar not cheap,but so are not Nikon and Canon lenses of the same standard Esther,and I think "eye focus" is very useful to have. I have had many adapters,but native lenses is really worth it.

    I got my a7rii with sony 35mm f2.8 for compactness and Zeiss quality for traveling.

I got sony curious, tried it and loved it, that's why I switched over from canon and Panasonic. Haven't been looking back since!
