Don’t buy a ton of expensive wax and expect to hit crazy cards. Start off small. Collect players you enjoy. Treat it as a hobby first. Spend your money wisely. 👍
I got back in the hobby about 2 years ago after a 20 plus year absence. It was very overwhelming at first. An I went about it the wrong way. Buying hobby boxes, buying into breaks etc. Agree with you guys and some others that have left comments. Buy who you like, players you followed growing up,and players you like currently. Growing up in the 80's and 90's in the north suburbs of Chicago. Some of my favorite players cards are astronomically expensive. Lol My best advice is make connections in the hobby, stay away from chasing cards in breaks and hobby boxes, and have some kind of budget. Once you start going down the rabbit hole of spending money it's like any other addiction it'll suck you in. Amazing video appreciate you!!
Similar here. Just started recently again after 22 years. I had an incident when I was a kid where 53 Michael Jordan cards I had in a case got broken open and literally the cards ended up in oil. Crazy story but after that I quit collecting. I think I was 16 then😅
Apparently I’m just like you. I’m more focused now on players I want instead of having 50 of those big rectangular sports card boxes holding 600 cards each. Most of them I don’t want. Sure you can sell them (if you have the knowledge and skill to go about it). Mostly I’m taking a break from buying now and I’m gathering to send certain cards from them to be graded and start having fun in that part of the hobby. Maybe later I’ll sell some.
just found this vid loved it. just started this year and loved the advice of start by collecting your favorite players. i’ve already made the habit of buying wax. Just bought my first card off ebay. a 2012 Topps Tribute Matt Kemp auto /99 for 23 bucks. My favorite Dodger ever. Gonna start collecting before investing and flipping fs. so hype thank u. 🤝🏼
Gettin back into collecting after 30 years. I understand the premise behind " let the knuckleheads open the wax so we can just harvest the goods. " mindset, but imo ( and call me a knucklehead if you want 😂 ) part of the fun of the hobby IS ripping wax lol it's just fun to comb through the cards as you open packs, check out all the inserts, mentally berate the company that issued the cards for having to many insert sets and then give up and try to complete all of said insert sets by buying singles lol Yea ok, maybe I AM a knucklehead 😂😂😂 PS: Great content fellas, and the info is much appreciated. I subbed and look forward to more breaks and general collector knowledge!
I started collecting the exact same way as you guys mentioned in the video. I became enamored with Michael Jordan in 1991 when I saw the Upper Deck commercial (it had this young black boy imitating the real Michael Jordan who was projected on a large screen). I never found out what card it was until much later. It was the card at the end of the commercial. It was the promo #1 card and not the #44 from the regular set. I quit collecting for the most part. But lately I have been collecting PSA 8+ Michael Jordan cards. I have other players I enjoy watching like Pippen, Shawn Kemp, etc...
speaking from personal experience, If you are just getting into it do NOT immediately start ripping packs. I got back into the hobby like a year ago and spent about $1,000 my first month into it and maybe recouped 10% in value.
That what exactly happened to me. I took a break and now I’m starting to dabble into some hobby box breaks. It’s been a little better but this hobby is expensive AF 😬
I do mags. Even for 2 dollar autos of guys I liked when I was younger, fan favorite types. Remember, it's your collection. Collect what you like and don't collect through boxes unless you are into building sets.
It's easy to become overwhelmed. Starting out simple and spending time figuring out what you want to collect is important. Do research, be patient and have fun.
@@LootboxTVreviews thanks. I have been using 130 point to gather an average of last sales and only plan to buy graded. Luckily I have a friend who’s been collecting for awhile so he helps me steer clear of some mistakes too
Ive started a little over a year ago i collect baltimore cards to collect is much better than to flip making money is nice but if you are in this hobby then you should have a team or player you like when collecting you can get what you like and not the hype enjoy the hobby for what it is
It should be about COLLECTING first! Love the video. I still buy a little bit of wax, but it's rare. I'm collecting what I liked as a kid. Sure, it's fun to invest and flip, but I got back into this during Covid to collect and enjoy the cards. This should be required viewing before people go to the National.
I think the most important things in collecting are, establish your guy, who is the person you want to see, there are so many sets, parallels, autos, inserts, etc. out there that it may make it overwhelming, then establish a goal, what exactly do you want to collect from this player, numbered cards, autos, rookies only, intersting cards, etc. Finally you need to set a budget, because you dont want to go down the rabbit hole of spending to get it all and end up losing all your money on it, also remember, in thia hobby, a card is only worth as much as someone is willing to pay for it, so try not to fall for ebay 1 of 1s
The demand changes so quickly in cards that the best strategy is to collect HOF’ers and to do it for the hobby and not the money. I have a Barry Sanders PC, most cards are 2$. That’s the right way.
Just started last month, I don't even know how, lol. I collect soccer, I pulled a gold power 1/1 of a player from Donruss, that got me hooked.....but it's cool I'm enjoying the openings. I don't know anything abt the other sports.
I'd like for someone to go over what card brands to stay away from and where do most collectors find the best packs? Should we buy from retail stores or hobby shops?
Thanks for the video. I just got into cards, I purchased a few through whatnot(it’s ehh). also been going to Walmart buying the 5 dollar packs and I love ripping it.
As a person beginning his venture into the hobby, I appreciate your video, but I do have a quick question. Why is it that eBay is selling identical cards for much less money than com c ? Is it because the sellers on eBay don’t know what they have or is there another reason again love the video
just like the 50-30-20 rule in finance, same can be applied to sportscards.. 90-10 .... 90% to singles of cards that you want, and 10% to boxes or blasters. to me?... I like about 95-5 rule. 95% to singles, and 5% to blasters, boxes, or wax (and you can adjust the numbers accordingly to how you want it). I don't 'expect' ever to get a good card, I just do it for fun. it reminds me of being young and opening '89 upper decks, '87 topps, and '93 Fleer Ultras.
Just got into cards again I wanna grab cards for my nephews and what I’ve been doing is buying really clean base cards that if they come back psa 10 or 9 I’d be good with
When is the right time to sell ??? I have a couple of baseball prospects that are doing good . Should I wait until they get called up to the big leagues ??
I have been putting cards in Penny sleeves them in the rigid card savers for storage. The same ones you would use if sending in to get graded. Are there pros and cons for storing that way?
Great video guys! I am getting into the hobby myself. I do have a question, when it comes to looking at comps for that one may be selling or trading, where is the best place to look at comps ?
Hey guys also from Philadelphia where are some good hobby scopes in the area even jersey of need be also I always support the channel for years now keep up the good work thanks in advance
I'm new to the hobby (inspired by Wemby) and I've bought so much crap off whatnot i completely lost track of what I paid or whats on the way 😩 don't be me you'll. New plan is to sell it all and condense into top graded wembys
It determines the quality and condition of your card being graded. This can affect the cards value and the demand for your card. The higher the grade, the better your card.
I recently purchased a numbered to 99 Tank Dell bomb squad for 30$ then the seller told me unfortunately we can't find the card you purchased so we will s3nd you a full refund. I was so upset. Is that common in the hobby?.
I mean I just got some screw downs for $2 a piece and think they look great for display purposes. I bought them for my original art sketch cards that I make.
That's exactly what they are is knuckleheads people say buy singles instead of wax because normal joe can't afford to open hobby. Everything in the hobby has increased, but mostly prices for boxes I mainly open hockey and you can't tell me a box normally sub $100 is $200 now that's messed up maybe one day things will come back to reality

What does grading do? The perfect time to grade it seems when the player is popular and in there prime?
It determines the quality and condition of your card being graded. This can affect the cards value and the demand for your card. The higher the grade, the better your card.
