Mil Mi-8 (NATO reporting name: Hip) is a medium twin-turbine helicopter, originally designed by the Soviet Union in the 1960s and introduced into the Soviet Air Force in 1968. It is now produced by Russia. In addition to its most common role as a transport helicopter, the Mi-8 is also used as an airborne command post, armed gunship, and reconnaissance platform.

@@tandemcharge5114 I mean, while an extremely weird comparison. I do believe, no matter what, an armed Mi-8 is a better gunship than an Apache is a transport. Cuz while one can ducktape guns on a heli, I don't think the Apache can suddenly gain cargo capacity

@@DonetskBall funny thing is, 99% of the time, russian Mi-8 AMTSH's operate outside of the range of ukrainian AA net and even if they fly into Iglas here and there, ECM pods work fairly reliably against most manpads (unless they are fully guided, like RBS). So yeah, there's no real countermeasure to helicopter raids as of now.

@@mineralwater6736 yeah, they get shot down, but they are also being used very extensively for CAS, logistics and medevac, so it makes sense during such type of war.
They go down, but not before taking out huge amount of opponent's resources.

It is surprisingly a fan. It's nice to have a little airflow in the cabin, and a $5 fan can be just as good as a $500 air conditioning unit.

Why do helicopters have those little fans in the cockpits? Anyone have an answer?

Now if you want to keep the pilot cool, how else would you suggest.
Helicopters most of the time get quite hot, and opening a window causing your maps to get blown around isnt good either. Ac doesn't work either, so a fan will do.
Modern mi8s have air conditioning, but the old ones had only a fuel heater KO-50, which could also be used as an air conditioner, but it was very bad at it. For this reason, the two small fans, while not very efficient, were a bit relaxing in a light breeze in a cabin heated to 60 degrees Celsius.
Also at the beginning, a new Mi-8Amtsh with air conditioning is shown. You can discern them by the presence of the cabin bottom blister (glass)
