    Good morning Davey. You really make tying tiny flies seem easy to do. All of the Fulling Mill materials look very nice and high quality. I’m looking forward to purchasing and using some different materials and giving them a go. Thanks for sharing your time and experience with us.

    Finally got to hit the water and there was none. That said the trout had all day to look at these flies but they still took them. Only a very light size 18 BWO hatch and a 30 white ghost ( I didn't have with me) But the yarn did the trick. Your timing on the video was spot on. Thanks.

    When I was a teen in the 80s, with good eyes, I enjoyed tying size 20s. My old uncle tho, Willie Campbell, a lifetime Clyde fisher, he said waste of time, cos you wont land a fish on it. Thing is tho, back then a size 20 Mustad hook was much stronger than the expensive Partridge hooks.

    Hello Davie. Thx for your nice video!
    I tie variations of this Patter for some years now. But mostly in bigger sizes. 14 and 16. My subtitute for the dry yarn you use is just some poly yarn in dun. In bigger sized flys i like to do the thorax with some cdc in a split thread for more lifelyness. Realy effective.
    As a suggestion for a flybox for the monthly draw i would love to see your recomendation on a dry dropper box that includes sighter flys as well as nymphs.
    Kind regards from Austria.

      @@DavieMcPhail Hello Davie.
      May i ask you a question?
      I made the experience that sometimes stiff fibers like hackle and deere hair are not soaked in by picky grayling very easy.
      Do you have experienc with poly yarn? I am asking because in my home water we have no graylings at all, and in a few weeks i am heading to Bosnia where i expect picky grayling.
      Kind regards Christian

    Hi Davie, couple of really nice patterns for the smaller olives. Can you just clarify though for someone thinking of buying the material, your materials info says BROWN DUN, but you refer to it as BROWN/OLIVE DUN. Sometimes there can be quite a difference? thanks

      Hi Peter,
      It was Brown Dun that I used in the video, there is a brown olive as well and there is a a bit of difference so I'm glad you mentioned it..I'm glad you liked the flies as well..

    Really enjoy your videos Davie, they're inspiring me to start tying flies again after a 20 year break! Could I ask you a really basic question? What wax do you use to wax your thread? Looks like you have a dab on your hand while tying - the stuff I used to use was a round yellow disk of wax that went rock hard!

    • @DavieMcPhail
      @DavieMcPhail  9 месяцев назад

      Hi Mike,
      I use the hard wax that you used many years ago as I soften it to get it to stick to the side of my finger, I made a video on the wax I use so I have attached a link to it for you to see.

    Hey Davie, Do you have any tips or videos tying size 18, 20, and 22 dry emergers, and/or dries like this using deer hair? or some natural fiber wings? also do you sharpen your own scissors>? Thank you!

    • @DavieMcPhail
      @DavieMcPhail  9 месяцев назад +1

      Hi @HalfInsaneOutdoorguy,
      I do have quite a few patterns filmed and tyed like this on RUclips though they are all over the playlists, I have attached a link to them for you to look through...I may start a new playlist with just emerger patterns when I get a chance as I'm sure it would make sense to do this..
      www.youtube.com/@DavieMcPhail/playlists
      I have tried in the past to sharpen my scissors but I did a bad job, I have just bought a sharpening device and stones to do my own though I've not had a chance to give it a go so I will be trying it very soon..

    Hi Davie, how would you compare this new FM yarn to say TMC aero wing?
    I tried the veniard para post but it didn’t seem to float so well. Have yet to find anything that matches the aero wing. Great video, thanks for sharing!

    • @DavieMcPhail
      @DavieMcPhail  8 месяцев назад +1

      Hi Robert,
      If you like the aero wing then you'll like the ultra dry wing as they float just as well though the ultra yarn is more open rather than straight, I've mixed them in some flies and they work really well...I will be working on a few more patterns for next season to see how they go as the ultra wing has many more colours than the aero wing..I'm glad you enjoyed the video..

    • @DavieMcPhail
      @DavieMcPhail  9 месяцев назад

      Hi @ruebdogg1,
      I just give the fly a wash and then I dry it on a patch of Amadou which keeps it in good order though after two or three fish I'll use my floatant on it to keep it up..I've attached a link to an Amadou patch for you to see..

    How does this wing fiber compare to snowshoe hare? Seems similar, probably easier to work with as well.

    • @DavieMcPhail
      @DavieMcPhail  9 месяцев назад +1

      Hi @TheSRob34,
      I've not fished a lot with Snowshoe but when I did it floated and fished really well but so does this fibre once you use a floatant on it and it will last a few fish before you need to change it..If you can find some of the Ultra dry yarn give it a go as I'm sure you will like it as I've fished it most of the year and I do like it..

    • @DavieMcPhail
      @DavieMcPhail  9 месяцев назад

      Hi William,
      It's best to use a floatant on it as it will last for a while before you need to redo it though I also dry the fly as well using an Amadou patch which also helps..

      @richardwhite9682 9 месяцев назад

      A quick online search showed several of that model for sale. All listed the rod as a 6/7 weight. You probably need backing. Those old reels had very small arbors. Wind on a line without backing to see how much empty space is left, or take it to a fly fishing shop. Most of them are very good at estimating backing amounts, and most won't charge you for winding backing onto the reel if you buy the backing and line from them.
