The documentary was filmed by actor/film maker Bryan Forbes. The bulk (if not all) of the concert performances were filmed in two locations. The Sundown Theatre in Edmonton, North London on 23 May 1973, and at the Hollywood Bowl, Los Angeles, on 07 September 1973. The film itself aired for the first time in the United States on the ABC network; ABC's "Wide World of Entertainment" on 17 May 1974.

The original documentary was aired on British TV channel ITV in August or September of '73. GYBR was released in the October.
