Part 1 of video: • Living With an Entire ...
In this part, I go over my favorite apps for controlling Hue lights as well as go over the best way to set up widgets for quick and easy access on your device.
Outfitting your entire house or apartment with Hue lights is not cheap, but I think its worth it in the end.
Sorry for some of the night scenes, I don't have a proper lens for night shots at the moment. In any event, hope you enjoy.

Finally, someone that really explains things, instead of just walking around their house showing off! Good job, tech freshness!!! Thank you for all the great info, much appreciated.
ha thanks, glad it helped!
this!
My favorite HUE feature is when you get a power blip at 3AM and all your HUE lights in your house turn on to full brightness. Then as you are dazed by the glaring lights you find your phone and struggle to open the app and turn them all off.
Paul Emerson ahh yes. My house likes to randomly shut off the power for 2 seconds sometimes so that would be interesting
ROTFLMAO!!! Yup
Your lack of " Netflix and chill" settings is disturbing .
+antwane fort haha!
Best video for hue lights that I've watched and I've watched loads. Now I cannot wait to get them. The video addressed all my worries and questions.
Thanks
I've decided to get a Hue starter kit and your videos have given me a lot of useful information and answered questions I didn't know I had. Thanks!
Me and my fiancée are saving for our own place to move into next year. This has been an obsessed idea of mine that she has shot down over and over because of the price. BUT, because of your videos on the system, she is CAVINGGGGGGG. So thank you, you have made my life that much better :)
a review of my favorite apps for philips hue bulbs and the best way i've found to setup and configure your controls (especially for iOS)
+techfreshness Give yourself other options by buying the LivingColors version of the Bloom/Iris. They come with the remote control which once you've bound them to the hub, let you control specific bulbs. I have a remote for my lounge controlling all the bulbs in there, one for the conservatory, one for the bedroom etc. Obviously you can still control the bulbs via the apps though. Better than the Hue Tap in my opinion.
yeh taht is very nice, only found out about that living colors just a few days ago myself.
Great video! Just purchased my started set, so this was a big help on getting setup.
Alex G. awesome man. they are addicting, ha. hope you like them!
Wait wait wait... there's in app purchases to "unlock" different features these have like flickering for candle / cloud effects? What the fuck!
Thanks for going in deep on the detail. I gotta pick some up now.
I dont think many people know this but if your bulb is flickering or making a buzz noise, on the back of the bridge under the word Tronic-Dimmer there is a 'Load adjustment screw' which helps stop that problem by turning the screw!
This is literally the best review on these! Just got them and this helped me out so much! But now I'm gonna be up all night playing with these setting lol
ha awesome, they are fun stuff. def recommend hue widget app and thorlight
The initial investment for the bridge and 3 lights is about $200 U.S. You can find deals though. Individual lights are about $59. I personally think they are the best. They integrate very well in an automated home.
I use to do it that way as far as the thumbnails for your scenes. But recently I decided to take a picture of say the Dining Room at night with the lights on and then use that picture as a scene. So when I go into my app I just tap on the real picture that has the dining room lights without having to read anything. And it just adds another cool factor to the whole lighting system operation.
+Losttouchjs yep, thats definitely a good way to do it too
Great review. Very useful information.
I like the Syfy Sync app. It uses the mic to set the lights according to tv shows like The Expanse. I have a portable Go light too.
you do have a new recent review for the 3rd generation bulbs and current hue apps? what 5 apps do you recommend now?
How does geofencing work with multiple phones? Like if multiple people live at a house, I don't want all the lights to turn off. I notice the site is saying it does something with the lights in movies. How does that work?
the geofencing will only work for one user. as far as the lights in movies, i don't have much experience with it, but my bet is it wouldn't be great because there is no way you aren't going to get some lag. but i'm not sure the exact mechanism to get it working...
Great detailed video.
hey bud, nice set up and video. I have subscribed to you. Can you tell me how much have you spent on all the phillips hue light set up
just downloaded on switch thanx! keep these coming!
+DieselDan09 awesome man, hope you like!
Hey Dude, Love Your Videos!
Can you do an update video for the hue bulbs with the new apple home app?
yeap >)
how does the the lux lights integrate with hue lights? When you choose scenes what do the lux lights do compared to regular hue lights? About to build a system and wondering if I have a few lux lights in the mix what would happen.
+Eddie Ruiz hey eddie, i BELIEVE they just will either turn on/off at whatever brightness level you have them assigned to in the scene (if you even want them assigned to the scene). make sense?
Do you have all your bulbs set up to one hub/bridge?
Are you going to upgrade the new Philips Hue light that recently announced ?
Cant believe i had use the Philip Hue BR30 Starter Kit and one single A19 blulb about 2 years now .Thanking to get new color ambiance starter kit A19 .And may be the lightstrip plus too .
+NewWalls98 hey newwalls, yeah i'm going to definitely give the new bulbs and light strip a try out very soon and compare, but i can't afford to upgrade all my lights!
Great video! Very informative. Thanks for taking the time to make it. I learned a lot and you have inspired me. I just bought a Google Home and a couple of Google minis. Now I will be getting the Hue lights as they work with it.
Update: I decided to go with LIFX bulbs instead. After reading several articles stating that the LIFX bulbs were much brighter and had more intense color saturation, I tried them out. IMO, this is very true. You don’t need a hub and they also work well with my Google assistant. I have 8 Google minis, 1 Google home and 2 Google displays. I also have two Chromecast and a WiFi connected thermostat. In addition to the LIFX bulbs, I have multiple bulbs, light switches, plugs and powerstrips from various manufacturers. I also have a number of security cameras including the Nest Hello doorbell. They all work wonderfully with the Google assistant, so I can control everything from anywhere in the world there is a WiFi signal.
It is so easy to get hooked on all of this home automation stuff. It makes things more convenient, secure, and fun.
Just make sure that all of your security protocols (passwords, anti-virus software, firewalls, software updates, etc.) are in place and up to date.
suwheet, glad you gettin into the game!
I'm loving your Channel latley keep it up man!
+Christian Shephard heck yeah, thanks a lot christian
Thanks for the info! Also, you have the USAA app... Thanks for your service, or that of your family member!
Is there a way to "link" bulbs with color or temps? I find that you have to guess on the color wheel with your bulbs that happen to be in the same room.
yeh unfort not an easy way i know of, i mean you can group lights and drag them but no specific color temps being able to set
techfreshness How go I group my hue light bulb in the hue app and also to have amazon echo recognice the groups bulbs?
+Robert Milanesio you create your own groups in the echo
Whats the difference between the br 30 and the a 19 hue lights?
Hello!, Can you set the lights to full brightness at 9am for instance and slowly change the brightness as the day ends...?
yes thats exactly what i do with my porch lights, although not sure why you would want all the lights ON at 9am? in any event yeah you can schedule them to go out, and fade in and out based on a set time
Can u reccomend me an app to make my philips hue light strip look like the razer chroma wave mode? Thanks in advance!!Great video!
hmm unfortunately, they don't have the ability to adjust timing of the individual LED's as far as i know, but for pulsing through colors you could try thorlight
Very helpful video.
Outstanding Post and review! You gave a lot of new information to me, and explain as well as showed it very well. I am like this Hue Widget App. I have always like the "On Switch" app, however it doesn't allow you to set up more than one alarm or timer which sucks as I use the HUE to turn on and off my lights all throughout the day and night. Thanks!
+Ren O'Neal thanks ren, glad it was helpful. you setup multiple alarm and timers for your lights in one day?
+techfreshness
Yes, I actually do. Using the native "Hue" app I normally have my lights come on in my bedroom at around 4:45am to gradually wake us up with a faded in "sunrise" scene and then it shuts all the lights off at around 6:30am. I also have the lights come on at around 5:00pm in random scenes and then they go off at around 10:30pm. I also set up various other times through the day depending on what I have going on. I typically have an on time, followed by an off time. I love this feature that seems to only be done inside the native "hue" app. I am aware of the "geo fencing" feature, however I don't run it since I like the timer feature much better for my purposes. Give it a try and let me know what you think.
Superb..Thanks for sharing....
I am planing to get Hue lights. Can you recommend some lamps that I can use with a A19 bulb (under $35, I plan to buy 2-3 lamps).
Awesome work with the apartment 👍🏼
+Arpit Jain hey arpit, thanks a lot. honestly any lamps that take standard bulbs will do. the lamps you see in my apartment were from ikea and they are inexpensive and work great. depending on the lamp though you may need some of these adapters, which i use for the square lantern light you see in the video.....here is a link to that one on amazon if you dont' have an ikea close (but its more expensive) amzn.to/1OVC4Xx also you will need these adapters amzn.to/1OVCa1d but like i say, any lamp you can find that takes bulbs will work with these. since the led lights don't get hot at all. hope that helps
loved this! you're just as much a tech freak as I am! I am planning on getting a few more smart lights at home, so obviously you've inspired me 😄
excellent!
techfreshness done! Already bought them 😄 looking into the chrome cast audio too!!! You're gonna get me ruined! Lol
haha, i know the toys never end, so fun
with my hue lighting i use the IFTTT app to control the lighting based on the weather.
+Keith May aww yea
+techfreshness where did you buy that orb light hanging in your bedroom?
+Danny Lim hi danny, i got it from etsy, if you search like yarn ball pendant lamp or some such
I have Philips TV 9000 series with ambi lights ! so it is possible to connect this bulbs with it by WiFi and do light within TV ambilight led strips. nice affect
So you need a converter for the IKEA lamps? Where do you get it?
yeah they need a little converter. these guys: amzn.to/2kyI2Xi
Great video man!
+GustavMagnus thx g!
Wow thanks for the videos! Everything you really need to know about HUE lights in two parts. Making this in two parts is very clever for short attention span-people like myself :) You might want to include the links to both videos in the videos summaries, though, instead of relying on RUclips. My first instinct was to look for the link in your summary to make sure I was going to the actual part 2 of the series. But RUclips was good to bring me to the correct video. As you probably know, the YT app on iOS doesn't let you tap on the video "target areas" (whatever it's called) you can overlay.
Nice condo by the way! :)
+Giorgio Pingiotti oh man thanks for the comments and recommendation, i wasn't aware of that issue in the ios app. will definitely add a link. thanks buddy
can you please help me, i have watched this video, but I can not find the huemote app on the play store ????
+Paul Shakeshaft Might be iTunes only. He's using an iPad and iPhone
I've been using Hue for 3 years, here's an app that will blow your mind - Simple Control, formerly Roomie. It's a universal remote app and you need to set everything up. But you can create your own customisable "remote" with whatever buttons you want to do whatever actions you want.. Way easier than your 4 app thing.
Again nice video. Just got my kit today. I know this is going to be an addiction getting more bulbs lol. Curious and not to be noisy, where did you get the round light fixture that hanging at your bedroom?
+DeeJay ReGg hey deejay, i got that off etsy actually. if you search like yarn pendant lamp ball or some combo like that. they are at modern design stores for like several hundred, otherwise i paid 75 on etsy
+techfreshness Oh great thanks for the info
had to say P1 is my favorite ! good choice!
+Berman119 haha
Aweomse! Pricey, but worth it ;) Keep it up buddy.
Thanks for the share, definitely going to get involved now Philips is now Apple home kit approved.
One question, is there anyway of sharing iOS setup within hue/3rd party apps with another iOS device.
Me and the misses both have iPhones and iPads, do we need to set up each device?
Thanks in advance.
Lee
+Lee Vardy hi lee, yeah each device will need to have whatever app. the best way to share the hue app is like how i mentioned in the video, just create a single account and use that same login on all your devices using the native philips hue app. but 3rd party apps, for the most part will all need to be setup seperately. does that make sense?
+techfreshness that's great thanks for the quick reply, great channel btw, I'm now subscribed!
Look forwards to my starter kit now
great and thanks for subscribing! i hope you enjoy them, fair warning, they are addicting (meaning you will keep wanting more bulbs) ha
Do you know how many lights you can add to a light group in a scene? It seems that I am seeing a limitation where I can only add 6 bulbs max. The seventh will not join the group.
+brandonld23 hey b, you should be able to add as many as you have....
Can't get lightstrip plus to connect when I set scene... Any advise?
+Kanahou Alana like it doesn't show up as a bulb available in the scene? try to delete the strip then reconnect it in the app?
I set up hue lighting system. I bought the colored kit plus 1 wide angle bulb and 1 hue the 1/2 bowl looking light I think it's called "go". Anyway, you seem to know more than me about this so. I bought the colored set first. So once I hooked it all up all 3 bulbs that came in the set works perfect with all the preset scenes for the lights. The other 2 I bought at a diff time doesn't work with those factory settings with the other 3 bulbs. I can make my own scenes and they all work together but not with the factory scenes. You have an idea what's wrong or is this normal? Thanks ahead of time. Great vid by the way 👍🏼
+Justonetime 77 hey onetime, nice, glad you picked up a set! hope you are liking them. if the factory scenes you are referring too are the basica like 'florescent' or 'daytime' settings, the one with the single color on the icon (sorry i can't recall what they are named) those are only designed to work with actual bubls, not like the LED's or spot lights, i forget the exact reason why i think its to do with color temp, but i forget, another commenter mentioned it. but if you are talking about the regular colored scenes, you just need to add the hue go to the scene, then it will be able to control it. but which wide angle bulb are you referring to? the br 30 should work fine with any scene....hope that made sense
Got it. Makes sense. Thanks for taking the time to respond. I'm using all the apps you brought up in this video and I'm liking the way they all work. Each has its own thing. Thanks.
I really like your bedroom chandelier (Pendent/Hanging one). Could you please let me know the site on where i can get one?
+Hari Chillara hi hari, thanks. i got that on etsy actually. just search 'yarn ball lamp'
+techfreshness unable to find one on etsy, but google had many searches with DIY options. I would like to buy one cheap, I will take more time to search around. Thanks for the reply
hi hari, actually i found my old order: i got it from her but don't know if she is still active, you can email her. www.etsy.com/shop/IvyStyles
Cheers for the tips.
You need to add a few Hue Taps to that apartment. They make the lights work so much easier for day to day living as you can program any scene to any button. I converted my whole house to these bulbs at great expense but they really came to be useful when the Hue Tap was deployed at convenient locations.
+Paul Thompson hey paul, thx for the tip, but yeah i will probably get a couple hue taps once i have more room, ie a house. as i dont' mind being in the habit of just using my phone now since its right next to me most times. plus i feel you on the expense!
I just thought it would be good for people to know about them because they make the system more usable, at least for me. The ability to just hit a big button on the way out and know all your lights are now off is most convenient. And you can program the perfect mood and activate it with one button on the wall so I find I use the mood settings more.
thanks paul, yeah the taps do seem convenient. also so crazy that it doesn't require any power!
Is there a way to make the lights wake you up at a specific time by sort of imitating the sunrise? So that it is more like a natural and slow process of waking up instead of being ripped out of your dreams by a noisy alarm. I don't really know if you can set it up like this - refering to you talking about alarms at ~10:52.
hi priv. u absolutely can. u set a sunrise scene and have it fade in over an amount of minutes you set. lights can't wake me up but if they do you you have that ability. also might I suggest the sleep cycle app. amazing
+techfreshness If I set 1 of the lights in my front porch could i program it to automatically turn on at sunset and turn of at sunrise? I mean do i have to set the specific time or does it have a way to to auto pull the sunrise/sunset times?
hi rey, you can definitely do it using one of the recipes on ifttt.com/recipes/search?q=hue+sunrise you just choose one and then assign the lights to that specific recipe.
Question on the GEO-fencing:
How well does it work with multiple people living at your place?
I.e. will it turn off my lights when I leave my place but my GF is still inside? I suppose all people in the house need to have a smartphone that is connected to a network (4G/WiFi) and have the app installed?
+ThatCoder hey coder, unfortunately, it actually still doesn't work with multiple people. its lame, if you leave, and people are home, it will turn the lights out on them ha. there are some hacky workarounds, perhaps based on your name you may look into it! for me though, if its not native, its not good enough to use imo, i seen a post that said hue was working on it, but its been a couple years now. i don't use the geofencing at all actually.
Thanks for your fast reply.
Sad to hear that, fits what I was expecting tho'. This was actually a function I'd frequently use.
As I have no experience with Hue or App Development, I won't be hacking a fix together any time soon.
I think they'd have to store an 'inside' users count somewhere on the bridge and only turn off the lights if it reaches 0. This does require that everyone inside stays connected to a network, at least until they left the fenced area. Once they get back inside, they'd have to connect again. I know not everyone stays connected all the time (e.g. to save battery life), so I can get the difficulties involved.
yeh, lots of potential for glitchyness, and the geofencing is somewhat glitchy as it is, ha. i did get an amazon echo though and that works great, lights on, lights off, done, ha
what if my house is too big will my phone be able to control those that are kinda far from the hue
as long as you in wifi range you be good
Hue lights are so cool I wish I had a full house of them too
Using an Echo is such a cleaner way to do this. I've got my entire downstairs area lit with hue lux and my Echo is able to pick up my voice over my entire common area (unless my in-laws are over and they're busy causing a racket). Calling out individual bulbs or groups of bulbs along with the intensity of light I want is so much quicker than digging out my phone. Grab an Echo, tie it in with your hue system and it gets so much simpler.
+PDX1Defender hey pdx, yep, i believe you. i've definitely considered it. its good that the echo is just always on at your service. the only thing the echo doesn't do right now is to be able to switch scenes?
+techfreshness I don't know about colors but I can call out what percentage of output I want. I'll typically turn everything on when I get home and turn off things as I go. During movies or TV time I'll set it to 10% across the house and enjoy a nice transition when I get up for a drink.
sick man, i may have to pick one up, ha. thanks!
+techfreshness no worries man. I'd like to see it with the colors. The $20 per lux is so easy to justify but the $60 for color was a little rough. As I expand further I'll possibly grab a pair of color bulbs for the living room along with a pair of LED strips for the top of the cabinets in the kitchen.
Do you just need one bridge to link all your lights together?
yep
Where is that over the bed lamp from?? How did you hang it over the bed??
hmm, well i got it off etsy, just search like yarn ball light or something like that they come up. install well i just replaced another light that was up there is that what you are askin?"
techfreshness thanks!
Are they really bright enough compared to regular lights, to supply your needs of daily living?
+Megan Brown it really depends how many bulbs you use. the are perfectly fine to me, it kind of just depends on what your lamp arrangement is and what overhead lighting you have etc. on average they are about the equivalent to 55-60 watts. so if you are use to 100 watt bulbs i think it will take some adjustment. if you are really concerned you can wait for the higher rated 800 lumen bulbs that they will be releasing soon.
+Megan Brown Better.. I usually turn mine down.. They go really bright. I have a full house full, I'm always turning them way down.
+techfreshness is that the ipad pro?
+Evan “blogsandvlogs” Poole no just air2
Great videos, I too converted my entire condo over to Philips Hue and it's not without its quirks. I.e. the geofencing is great until you have a bunch of people over and head out to run an errand or pick someone up and they are all suddenly left in the dark. It's also very hard to get visitors to not flip switches on and off like they're used to. I found some covers but they're really ugly, I have high hopes for the new dimmer and on/off switches I just found out that Philips released. I think the key is going to be having a system that functions using regular switches so that the app type settings are just an extra convenience and for advanced settings. Anyhow, thanks for posting these videos I appreciated seeing someone else's perspective on full adoption of the Hue system, I should do one as well.
+findtom1 ha good points, i never even though about that about the geofencing thing. but yeh the switches thing can be a little annoying. like you say definitely not without its quirks, still i like it better than regular, even in spite, don't you? the dimmer switches seem good too, but just another expense ha.
Definitely worth it, despite the quirks. I just installed a couple of the dimmer switches, they're really great I highly recommend them. Glad they priced them at $20 each as well, I think these might finally get my set up to where I feel like it's finished.
nice man, i didn't actually realize the switches were so cheap.
It looks like the color light is so weak? Is it just you that have dimmed it down? Or are they this weak? Looks like it's around 400 lumen with white color, and less then 50 lumen with color?
Most likely the camera, I have cheaper multi-color LED lights and I wanted to take a picture with my phone and it looked very dimmed.
Ripcurl6 they are very bright. They give great light output. It's probably poor camera exposure. I love mine. Always adding more when I can.
The new Home app in iOS 10 will make it so much easier, can't wait to start buying my own Hue products 😎
very cool, thanks
He should set up Android Home. It has far field microphone so you can calmly tell it which scene to select
do you find the BR30 bright enough? I have 1250 lumens in my bedroom now and not sure if it'll be bright enough.
+Cesar Razza hi cesar, i think you'll find the hue lights a huge step down in that case in regards to brightness. do you have a single bulb in the bedroom, or is that total lumens from mutliple bubls? (i personally do find the br30 bright enough for my kitchen, as there are 4 bulbs). but if you like it really really bright then i think you'll be wanting for a little more brightness. they have 800 lumen bulbs coming out soon tough.
+techfreshness I have 3 recessed lights in my bedroom that are 1250 lumens each. I still really want it. Hmm, maybe I'll wait till the 800 lumen lights come out. Thanks again! Great review
+techfreshness Any idea on the timing for the 800 lumen bulbs?
hey christopher, they are already out! (i have a review of them up)
I think you forgot to mention one of the coolest and most convenient feature : You can control your entire Hue system using Phillips LivingColors remote ! :) This is a must have
+Apokylis thansk apoklyis, yeh a lot of people do like the remotes, i'm fine with just using the phone though, or my echo, but for those that need a switch its great
Thanks. BIG HELP.
+Steve Beal excellent!
How many bulbs in total and what was the cost?
+Rahul R hey rahul, it was roughly 1100 if i recall, its 16 lights total
Im LITERALLY addicted to getting hue lights, I already have 12 A19 bulbs, 2 blooms and 4 A19 White Bulbs. Im looking into getting 2 Hue Gos and 2 Light Strip Plus's. Im constantly looking up the prices and seeing where they are on sale and this black friday isn't looking good so far. Best Buy is selling the BR 30 starter kit for $129 (but they are last gen/old packaging). Home Depot has yet to announce their sales, but last year around this time they sold the A19 Starter Kit with a free bulb. But if anyones looking for the cheapest bulbs, Best Buy recently has been the best place since the've been marking down prices on the last gen bulbs which are basically the same. I have the new gen A19 and notice literally no difference even though its 800 Lumens vs the old 600 lumens. Although the new A19 bulbs are supposed to last slightly longer. You should download OnSwitch, its the best app for philips hue and it also looks the best, I've downloaded pretty much every app and its still the best. Anyways you're like the only other person I know of that decks out their entire house with these lights and its awesome, I watched your videos before I bought all of mine and I don't plan on stopping even though its a more expensive habit than drugs lol
+Zayden Alexander haha i hear ya zayden. good call on the prices/deals man thanks for the heads up. the funny thing is if/whenever i get a house, im gonna go broke on these guys, lol
how many network bridges do I need to setup the lights in my house? Does each room require a separate bridge or one bridge works for all the lights.
50 is the max number Philips says. That is for seamless operation.
@22jcrewjim has no idea what hes talking about, you only need one bridge connected to a router and the app
+Matt what are you talking about? You can connect up to 50 lights per bridge before the lag gets too much. I do know what I am talking about I have the system and have had it since the beginning.
+22jcrewjim bro he asked if he needs more than 1 bridge for his lights not how much light bulbs can the bridge handle...
You only need 1 bridge
A man with real racing on the hotabar? Now tahts a real man!
ha you know it! wanna join my team? its RR4L (real racing for life).
I don't have any lights or plan to get any but I still find this interesting
+Antonio Morales ha cool, thanks, glad you liked it
nice and stuff, hope you're happy and stuff
Cool place, I like the setup. Have you switched over to HomeKit yet? It's a bit cumbersome at first, but highly recommend. I don't even use the widget anymore. Plus there's just a geek factor to turning off all the lights and never pushing a single button, when it's time to go to sleep.
+grnsgottaM hi there, no i didnt' switch over to homekit as i didnt' think it was worth the hub upgrade. can you explain what you are doing? (i use teh amazon echo now to control my on/off)
+techfreshness I've got 25 bulbs running currently and jumped on HomeKit as soon as I could. I primarily only run maybe five different scenes, but voice control has really brought the Hue bulbs to the next level. "Hey Siri" is my favorite, with the iPhone 6 it only works hands free when plugged in. I believe that always on may be an option for the 6S. This also comes in handy in the car, where I'm always plugged in, so hands free works as I pull into the driveway. There are several voice commands, but one I use often is brightness, which sets brightness across the whole house.
So for movie time, instead of killing all the lights and setting a specific scene, I usually just say "set lights to zero", lowest setting. I know, you'd think it would be off.
ah yeh the voice control is nice and it is always on on the 6s, my experience with siri has always been bad, but i do like the echo for the voice control. so you are turning on the lights as you pull up, thats pretty good. you could also setup geofencing, although that gets hairy with mulitple people ha. you checked out an echo?
+techfreshness I haven't checked out Echo, but will. I used to use Geofencing, but don't know if I like it always being on. This way, if the house is dark I just hey siri "turn on normal". Yeah, I didn't give themes any cool names. Just practical ones.
Normal, office, office concentrate, Night TV, Cave TV, etc...
Apple Watch would be nice I suppose, except the part where I don't want to wear one. Suppose I'll wait until the 7 comes out for always on "hey Siri". My experience is Siri is good for basic tasks, but Google is smarter.
+techfreshness Wait, I have seen the Echo, I didn't know it could do light commands.
Awsome video
awesome, glad you liked it
Sick bruh, wanna get me some of those
Are you still using hue and in the whole house? Did you find any issues?
yep yep. the only issues is with using it with alexa sometimes it doesn't respond everytime correctly
techfreshness Thanks for sharing. Awesome review.
What weather app are you using??
+Justin's Beatdown hey justin, its yahoo weather, then you enable it as a widget so you can see it in your notification screen on the pull down
Thanks, I loved the widget which is why I wanted it. None of my current apps offer that good of a looking one.
As an artist, I use this to test out how certain colors look in certain lighting. For example, an apple in blue light, or a hand in purple.
I only just found out my iPad can have widgets lol. Thanks
Too dim for the price. I had the same issue with the Avea bulb. Which is why I have just one
The Hue range are in fact very bright. Around 600-900 lumens per lamp fixture. Obviously your going to get brighter states with your whites.
What is the dotted lights at 13:20 ?
+ancientar that would be the city of atlanta! ha
I was gonna ask where I could by it. Better save up for a while then! haha!
haha
Have you found that all those apps tend to drain the battery of your phone?
+smithstonhubes actually yes, if you have the ones that do cycling and what not constantly running, you'll want your phone plugged in.
okay cool, thanks for the feedback
Do a giveaway of some hue lights!
"I was watching a Bug's Life and set the colors of the lights to the bugs..."
Sentences I never expected to hear lol
+Sam Rodgers haha
Randomly ran into this video (part 1 rather) and totally recognized the building you live in... unless developers copy & paste floor plans (I'm sure they do actually) this building is located inbetween an orange and a magnolia (so to speak. )
ha, i believe you have it correct. no worries, it was the spire bldg in midtown :P
Shits Gankster bro, I got the whole set up too, lots a bulbs, multiple LED strips, But honestly ur pad goes way harder than mine. Lights are a pantie dropper fasho. "oh your gonna leave girl? really quick whats ur fave color?" ---"OMG that is soooooooo cool" .... DONE.
+Adrian Flory haha, thats a wrap
this is the future, and i like it😂
Ciccio Capriccio Actually it's a year in the past
I know ahhahaha but this is how it should be, a smart house
These don't seem very bright and all.. are they appropriate for normal lighting when it is nighttime?
hey nick, yeh they aren't the brightest for sure, especially compared to a 100watt bulb, if you just have a single bulb lamp in the room, i'd say you will probably feel like you would want more light, once you get in excess of 3 they are good though, i used them just fine. but yeah if you like it really bright, i'd say you may not be happy with it
+techfreshness hmm ok. Still really really cool. Great video & thanks for the response!
The app OnSwitch was a real let down, it drains your battery fairly quickly when you use the flow color option, and if you turn off the lights with your regular hue app the OnSwitch will turn your lights back on the next time it wants to switch colors. On my iPhone 6+ it drained 12% battery in about an hour of "flow color" usage.
+Spektra wow, really? i had not noticed that (about the battery life), but yeh you have to quit the whole app to stop the color switching. i actually don't use it anymore, i exclusively use the hue widget app, which i think is the best app out there. they added color cycling too, although its a .99 cent add on.
+techfreshness speaking as a developer, color cycling requires firing messages to the bridge constantly as the bridge doesn't have an API to do it directly from the bridge. This depends on how quick and/or smooth the transitions should be.
Thinking of developing a hue app, If you wanted color cycling would a really slow, but therefore battery friendly, color cycle be OK instead?
hey nexii, ah that makes a lot of sense thanks for explaining. i never noticed it was killing the battery. honestly for the color cycling to be most useful, it really needs a slider to adjust the timings of the cycling. i would love to work with you on getting one developed if you wanted, i was going to do it with my buddy but he was too busy, i already have a pretty solid wireframe for an ipad app. hit me up on techfreshness gmail if you like! btw imo, the hue widget is currently the best app out there
Hmm, seems to be no more any such thing as "huemote". It looks useful for what I want to do. But I did find a bunch of apps not mentioned in this video, such as Huedini (clever name).
+Daren Wilson ha nice, yeh there have been tons of apps since then. that is a cool name. by far, i use the hue widget app the most to control my lights
+Daren Wilson The Huemote app is for Apple devices only, and definitely still around. I have Android. :( But there are all those other apps to try...
If you have a Philips TV you can connect the light bulbs to the TV and they will match the colors thats showing if you watch a movie, tv show or just regular tv.
+Macklebro Really? Too bad, Philips TVs are shit.
Ross Gambino You are joking right? Philips TVs are easily top 3 best brand to buy a tv from.
Macklebro LOOOOOL....NOPE...what the fuck...this should go in the top bullshit comments
Macklebro 1 Samsung 2 Panasonic 3 LG
Ross Gambino Panasonic? You are joking right?
Is it cool - Yes
is it useless - Yes
Would I pay for that - Nope
Would I install that in my place - Yes (if you give them to me)
You did a pretty good review. The product is interesting but overpriced to my eyes.
Exactly!
It's supose to save money in the long run, does it actually last 18 yrs tho or how long it's supose to I doubt that
Yannick Morand WAY overpriced. But in the long run it saves you money
