Rear backlight with LCD display is an excellent implementation.. as those lights would enhance the black level perception enough that no Oled display is needed.
Just turn off the two lights at the bottom when watching Movies so your eyes narrow the area they have to focus.

If youre wondering if its distracting, it isn't unless you use the philips hue go lights like he used. As always, having your light be indirect works a lot better than two glowing orbs in front of you constantly changing colour. I have a philips ambilight tv which provides the same effect as this and have it linked with a hue lightstrip underneath the tv and it is not distracting at all. However, when linking in my spotlights in the ceiling, its a pretty terrible experience as I can see the lights and the whole room changes colour, so I dont use these

Ive been a Plex user for years and this video totally inspired me to add Hue to my home entertainment center and i LOVE IT! One thing i did a little different, instead of 1 light strip with extensions on the back if the Tv i did 2 light strips with one on each side to get a vibrant stereo color effect behind the Tv. Thank you for posting your setup!

I did a similar setup recently, moved my Mac mini with Plex to the TV added a lightstrip, a HueGo at the bottom and it really is amazing, now I really hope they find a way to integrate the Apple TV and a PS4 soon cause it’s really sad to only be able to use it with the Mac Mini

  • @AnthonyNajera

I've actually done something similar with my room. I installed the light strips under my bed and have a huge bulb so when I turn on the hue sync I have a little party type scene in my bed room. It's amazing! I have regular Christmas lights on my mountedTV however, so they don't work with the sync app. This set up is by far superior but it's definitely worth it as I've seen the effects up close.

Great set up! just sucks that this is only available on a traditional desktop/laptop and doesn't support any streaming services. I don't understand why Hue wouldn't hold off until they at least gotten one streaming service and/or box to run this app. Something as simple as working with Apple to include this option with the Apple TV 4k and iTunes library seeing the box has the power to run this with ease could've allowed apple to add a huge selling point for their product

Hey Johnathan, you should check out Dreamscreen. It allows HDMI pass through so you can use things like your PS4, XBOX One, PC etc... and use Netflix on those systems. The only issue I've heard is they are having problems with Apple TV at the moment, but I'm sure they're working on a fix.

Question for you LED lovers! :
I bought a HUGE strip of leds with music visualization and a ton of different modes that look pretty "sick" in my college dorm when blasting music. HOWEVER, I'm now moving into my own apartment and plan on setting them up in my living room now, but want to avoid it looking like I just put command strips on the ceiling and called it a day any suggestions for making it look more clean?
I can find the amazon link if you guys want!

Screenbloom is a great app by a single developer that achieves something similar without the DRM restrictions.
It's also much smoother feeling. My experience with Hue Sync so far is that's it's super jittery, where as screenbloom allows you to smooth out color changes over time.
It's not quite as quick to react, but it's way less distracting. I'm hoping Hue Sync adds in an option for smoother color transitions.

I'm so glad that Philips has released this software! Beforehand, the only way to do it right was to use this box from one company that was a couple hundred bucks, and couldn't do 4k or HDR. Glad to see Philips competing here! Definitely going to try it out on my setup eventually. Thanks for showing this off Jon!

    Hi,
It looks like you have a great setup but unfortunately in this short description video it’s impossible to try and go through all the steps needed to get the Phillips Sync Setup working with movies and music the way you have it.
It would be of great help if the details and instructions of your recommendation setup could be written out for us to follow the setting up of the whole system to get it to work.
Is there anyway you could do that and provide a link for us to go to and see the written instructions and product recommendations to get this all working?
    Thank You!

I am able to play movies and music on my Windows PC and the lights will work, but I am having a hard time trying to utilize the Philips Hue Sync App for my TV. If the Philips Hue Sync application must be both installed/ran from PC, how were you able to use that service on your TV? Did you install both the Plex Media Server and Philips Hue Sync application onto your Mac Mini, then connected the Mac Mini to your TV?

This a great setup if you have the money! However, you can make an ambient light using a Rasberry Pi anywhere for $20-$100 depending on how much you spend on each component needed. This Phillip's Hue lights are easier way for sure, but there are many tutorials on this! Though I will admit that the Phillips Hue seems to be a great product. Great video as always!

The reason why there's no significant difference between ripping to MKV on the Mac Mini vs. iMac Pro is that there's no transcoding going on. You're just copying the h.264 video file from the Blu-ray and putting it into an MKV container for playback on Plex. The single biggest factor in how long it takes is the speed of your Blu-ray drive. It's really just a massive file copy. 😁

Any suggestions for how to incorporate the hue light strip with an LG W7 Series Signature OLED65W7P 65" OLED Smart TV 4K UltraHD? It’s so thin that going behind it won’t work.

For the backlight, is the only one main light plus extensions or separate lights?

Thanks for the awesome video! Question if you have a second, does this only work when the TV is physically connected to a PC via HDMI? What about Airplay from a iMac?

You should have just got a dreamscrene 4k then you could connect an apple tv Chromecast up to 3 HDMI sources and Netflix would work

great job - its sad that a Philips ambilight tv does that all on its own. would love for it to come to the usa.

Shame logitech beat Hue to it really, screen sampling has been in their products for some time. The first product to feature screen sampling reactive lights were the G560 speakers with built in lights.

    Great video.
I'm fuzzy on how you're making the lights sync (react) to music and movies. Do you have to play the movie or music via Plex while running the Hue Sync App on the Mini.
I use my Mini as the Plex server, but run Plex on a Roku, so I don't think this will work. Same for an Apple TV. Or will it? The movie technically is still on the Mini.

Is it possible to say Hue Sync (Entertainment) if the light is up, middle or down (aside of right/left and front/back)?
