Absolutely wanna see a patch from scratch. That sounded awesome! Wow man, what a beautiful case, collection of modules and studio! Dude, you should be proud of all you've built! So cool. Heck, I'm proud of you!!!
... you left the loose screw inside the case? That's going to weigh on my mind like how I still owe my friend $5 but I can't pay it back because I haven't been able to get in touch for years.
@@nathanfreeman7362 Pretty sure he could afford to buy his own restaurant... maybe even an entire chain. But the debt still nags at me, even more than a decade later. In other words, Bo's eurorack isn't the only thing around here which has a screw loose.
Nice man, I recommend to turn the power on after each module instal. If 1 out of 50 or whatever modules is connected wrong you’d have to unscrew each one till you find the wrong one.
The modular test: stop watching, listen to music and ask yourself: would it be possible to reach same sound with nice prepatched analog machines ? 😉 Of course there is the intellectual challenge and pleasure to control from scratch sounds + to occupy yourself with the “what next module should it get ?” 🤔 Hopefully we are all different!
of course i could make the sounds in a lot of cases, but the depth of sound design is only one aspect of the appeal of eurorack. the many options for control and modulation make working within modular to create music a truly unique paradigm.
My OCD tells me that screw needs to be gone. How about using a telescope magnet? You know, those little sticks with a flexible arm. Always handy when you lose screws or dropped a metal somewhere where it shouldnt belong.
I am so pleased I picked up my MicroModular again. Without it I would have no way to scratch that modular itch and I know I would fall into this epic hole of modular madness.
Bro you need some sort of telescopic magnet. One of those extended drill bits with the magnetic tip should do the trick though. Belongs in every tool box.
Holy smokin' silicon! That's one fine-looking system, Bo. Cannot wait to see some future patch ideas, sound demos, and modifications. I also use Modular Grid for planning the layout and subsequent changes. It's indispensable. I don't know if I will ever consider my Eurorack synth to be "DONE!!" as one of the principal reasons to build a modular synthesizer is having the ability to reconfigure it. Besides, I've got some empty space in it that begs to be filled with modules, perhaps ones that don't even exist yet.
I feel like its so big its actually inconvenient haha. I have a system thats 3 rows of 140HP and I had to upgrade to longer cables for it. Yours is so big you have to like stand and lean to reach knobs.
Hey Bo. My tip: you can find tools which are basically small magnets on telescoping shafts at auto parts stores. Like an old radio antenna w a magnet on the end of it. I keep one next to my big case (only use when it's powered down). Tilt the case towards a corner (maybe jiggle it around if needed), remove a single module, problem solved :)
That is beyond awesome! If your case cost more than your car, the modules must have cost more than your house :-) I really liked the little run-through chats about the modules at the end. Very interesting and useful.
9:08 that‘s an ordinary Macro Controller, which is already in many many Synths. Each synth with a modmatrix is capable s functionality. And in modular there‘s MI Frames, which gives you even more functionality...
Interested to see how your Black Hole DSP’s behave with the Meanwell power supplies BoBeats. I’ve been running my system on 4MS power and recently wired in Meanwell supplies and noticed Black Hole DSP lost all stereo spread to the effects. It collapses the stereo field completely. Swap back to 4MS and it the DSP stereo comes back to life. Took me weeks to work out why my patches suddenly seemed so flat and lifeless.
Yes, more!! I just started a little semi modular TABLE (DFAM, Quadrantid Swarm, MicroFreak, RC 202 Looper), but Im hooked on the idea of building MY MONSTER, so keep doing THESE videos. Patches, unboxing, module demos, performance, etc. GO, BOY!!
I sold my Dotcom Modular after playing some ours with the Arturia MicroFreak. This little buddy runs circles around my modular-System. ;-) Please spend some pennies in a telescopic magnet - these hopping screws are a constant part of my life. Thank You for this video!
The acid style jam you made there from about 6:00 onward seems to really come out easy for you. Maybe you should consider leaning into that style a little bit, it was probably -to my ears - the most profound thing I’ve heard from you. Well done!
Bo, you will never be done with your modular synth. My wife told me (as she was unboxing our new Cobalt8) "That's the last synth now, right?" I'm so glad she's not looking at my bookmarks right now. ReFace DX, Korg Drumlogue, Behringer 2600... they are so TEMPTING! :)
Hey Bo ! Im currently building my own modular synth case and im currently wiring my psu and putting in the protective conductor wiring. Did you make the case on your own or did you buy it premade ? The rails where you have the protective conductor wires connected look really interesting. Also the Busboard and PSU Setup. Cases are such a integral part of the whole modular synth situation but seem alot overlooked. Biggest part when it comes to correct wiring and safety...
I never would have considered WASPS, other than that weird little yellow synth, as a potential hazard to a Eurorack Case. Learn something new every day
Nobody deserves this setup more than you. Have fun ! 🌈🦄🖖 P.S. Did the lights in your county dim when you first turned it on? And did you have to register it with any authorities before you put it into operation?
Did you think we wouldn't notice the upside down Queen of Pentacles? 🤔 love how he flipped around mid video, did you do it on purpose to try and tell it apart more easily from the blck_noir?
Congratulations on takin the dive you seem so excited what a lovely system by the way what did you use to plan the system? What app or was Adobe illustrator?
It is never done, Bo. You add stuff, you take away stuff, you move stuff around, you buy another case and slowly fill it up. Then you buy another or maybe sell one and then buy a bigger one (or smaller for traveling). Then different cases get redesigned and made to fit different ideas. One becomes your effects processing case, another takes on a West Coast flare, another is for sampling and digital synthesis tools, or maybe stuff is all mixed around and it works best for you for a while that way. It is always in motion.
You are never finished with adding to modular other than budget, time and space. I started small as well Bo and now have two large 14u setups. It is by far the most fun creative way for music but also expensive.
I have a question re modular. Isn't it a little restricted with regards to automation based on a modular hardware sequencer, surely you can't automate based on a specific bar in a 'song' so you are always limited to that long repetitive style of music without as much bar/time specified movement/automation as anything you could make in a DAW or other integrated solution? Or am I missing something? I understand 'songs' aren't usually the intended output of modular but just interested if there's a solution I'm missing here?
It's a different way of doing things, but a handful of midi or cv sequencers would act similar. This like the minibrute 2s or DFAM . Modular is kinda an philosophy, arguably it's better and worse than a daw for automation. Then again most of my experience is in VCV rack or hardware mods.
The philosophy is the exploration of sound by creating your own work flow or synth. You can arguably create all the same sounds in a daw, but the tactile nature helps with discovery.
Hi Bo. Congratulations on your awesome eurorack set up. One thing that is kind of baffling is how to power such a behemoth. It seems like you have a number of switching power supplies. Any chance you could shed som light on your thought process re power and how you ended up with the solution you did. Thanks for yet another great video.
I cannot agree that the forecaster module introduces anything new to eurorack as the Verbos Electronics «Scan and Pan» module does the same + panning of each channel. Also Makenoise Rxmx does the same(alltough not DC coupled) with 6 input channels. However the module looks cool and fun to use:)
never said it introduced something new to eurorack. I said it is new to me and a function you often do not see on normal synths. Very little seems totally novel in the world of eurorack: most is just slightly differently implementations of same basic ideas.
