    What a performance and arrangement! The way Miller orchestrates it, it sounds like there are strings and woodwinds in the mix. Maybe it's the dampered French horns. Pretty stunning all around

    Great recording. I really enjoyed the pace, and the careful attention to dynamics. Hats off to you people. I played French Horn in a brass quintet 30 plus years ago. Brings back very fond memories. Thanks for taking the time to make this video.

    Just getting around to listening to this one. It's all too easy to get heavy-handed with Shostakovich's music. Barclay Brass avoided that trap and instead produced a light-hearted and agile sound. Excellent!

    Very well performed in all instruments. The dynamic could be somewhat wider, especially on the piano and pianissimo side. Stunning chorale. I have played and conducted wind ensembles that have not captured Shostakovich as well-with high woodwinds in those many passages, with all ten fingers no less! Amazing. I hope the person down-voting can elucidate their point with specificity?

    Same key as Hunsberger’s arrangement

    • @mathbrown9099
      @mathbrown9099 4 года назад +3

      Not to argue the point, but the Hunsberger arrangement has so many more arrows in its kit. Miller’s genius is shown when but a few of Hunsberger’s available tools are nearly matched in a brass ensemble. I totally enjoy both, but would not compare one genius to the other.

    Why in Ab?? Why??? Why not in A? Is it "too hard?"

    • @mattjackman1206
      @mattjackman1206 3 года назад +5

      Because playing in written Bb major sits way nicer under the fingers than B. Also the piccolo stuff would be going up beyond high Gs which is very rare.

      @@steftrando I can promise you that the fast technical parts in this arrangement, even in Bb, are infinitely more difficult than the original, which is mainly just the fanfare figures

    It is disturbing to see a trend among tubists to blow out their cheeks. It reduces tone control.
