  • This short video is ilustrating the process of forging a pair of greaves, as a part of full Italian export gothic legs from the second half of XV century . Next steps will be fitting the hinges and the upper leg, grinding, sanding , rolling the edges, and polishing - not included this time.
    Don't try this at home!

I'm making a pair of tongs like that, gripping armour is tricky.

If the armor follows perfectly the body, where does the padding go ?
As you are using thin sheets of metal (i know that historical armors were as thin as possible to make them lighter while still making them protective engouth) if the wearers takes a bad hit on the leg, if the armor caves in, it might injure and wound him ... so how does it really work ?

Well fitted parts of armour, like legs and especially greaves , don't require any padding beside thick woolen hoses. For the rest of the body, under a well developed suit of late medieval armour only a thin layer is required, with an exception for a helmet- as they used to be much more padded . Nowdays it's the opposite, very loosely fitted armour and very thick padding seems to be most popular among sport fighters. That's why they don't look or work properly.

Lukáš Kopecký , you can choose between fast and easy but costly, slow and difficult and pricey , fast and easy and not quite looking like greaves ;)

    Спасибо. Интересное видео.
Мне только одно не понятно - почему так мало просмотров и так мало подписчиков у канала.

      Thank you!
I don’t know why, I think it’s because this is a very niche subject and for majority of people watching this is very boring :)
