  • I'm moving hydrangeas into containers. These plants had previously been in the ground near a Black Walnut tree, and were starting to suffer. Some hydrangeas can handle black walnuts, but not these! Come with me and let's plant up some hydrangeas into containers for their better health in the long term!

    Free plants! Gotta love it. Have an idea for you. You could bury the pots that you planted the hydrangea in. The plants would still be safe from the juglone and it asthetically looks nicer.

      that's an interesting idea! So far, the containers behind the stage are hidden by the stage, so it's not a huge deal, but I'll keep this idea in mind.

    I have used tomato fertilizer for roses with great success. It is cheaper than rose fertilizer.

    Enjoyed watching this process. The fact that the Hydrangeas are sitting up out of the ground really works for that area - they're really pretty. YAY for free plants! Makes me want to go out and dig up a couple of mine just to see if there are any divisions. Thanks for the video.

      I want to use those kind of pots as well , since drainage holes are pretty large I wasn’t sure if I needed to add anything over them. What do u recommend.

      @@margievaughan2456 dear Margie, in those cases i use very small plastic pots upside down to cover large holes.
      The picture in my account shows "Maria Lisa " climbing the walnut tree 😁

      I just filled the pots with soil, didn't worry about the holes being large... but I'm not putting the pots onto any surface, they'll all be sitting in garden beds, so it's not such a big deal. When I'm putting pots onto a hard surface, sometimes I use a coffee filter inside the pot to keep the soil in.

    Like the way you "roll around here." I too have so many black nursery pots of different sizes that many freebies (divided plants) get their new home in them, glad to see not everyone has a brilliant container for every potted plant : )

      I actually prefer more subdued colors for containers, because I like the plants to be the things that shine. I do have a few decorative pots, etc., but not many. Thanks for watching!

    Yay! More hydrangeas! A sea of them would be gorgeous! And the built in advantage of having them in pots is you can play around with varying heights and positions to create more depth!
    I'm in central Texas with alkaline soil. I grow mine in pots so I can adjust the acidity and so I can adjust location for dappled sun if needed. I've been so surprised that Endless Summer macrophylla has done so well for me since 2020!

      That's awesome! I'm finding that watering is my biggest key to success.. we get surprisingly dry here, comparatively, and when I water consistently they do SO MUCH BETTER!

    • @HarmonyHillsHomeandGarden
      @HarmonyHillsHomeandGarden  3 года назад +1

      It's important to have plants that are hardy to two zones cooler than your zone, if you want to overwinter them in containers. So, for me, I'm in zone 7, so these hydrangeas are zone 5. They should do ok. the Encore Azaleas are zone 6, so I might have to protect them with some shredded leaves or something if I overwinter them in the pots.

    • @jackiesplanthaven

      @@HarmonyHillsHomeandGarden Definitely on the look out for hardy ones at the end of the season. My zone is 5.

    Our neighbors have several black walnut trees which roots come into our yard. They are a true pain for gardeners. I experimented this year with globe amaranth (still flowered, but are pitiful plants, cosmos ( died after transplanting), foxglove did great as did 2 types rudbeckia. I am going to try other cut flower annuals again next year. That way, I don’t waist a bunch of time and money struggling with more expensive plants. Putting planters in is such a great idea. Thank you :) Good teacher.

    Those black containers still look great. When you hide them behind some low shrubs no one will be the wiser. Your garden looks great. I notice you have loropetalums, which make me jealous because I can't grow them in NY. I even tried them in pots, no success. You might want to add some Idian Howthorns as well. I am successful in growing them in pots. Brought them back from Georgia.

      Thanks! No, sorry, I don't have a video showing how we built it. It's a few years old. It's just a frame made out of 2x4's, and then 2x6 decking boards screwed in with decking screws.

    Jenny, love your videos. Hint, use your wheelbarrow for moving heavy things around the yard.

    • @HarmonyHillsHomeandGarden
      @HarmonyHillsHomeandGarden  2 года назад +2

      Our wheelbarrow is unstable and unwieldy, and I have trouble controlling it when it's full. Plus, it's a long way from the driveway, around the house (up a hill), and down to the back yard. So, yeah, hard to use. Now I have a gorilla cart, much easier!

    Last summer I fertilized all my hydrangeas every month & they didn’t bloom. Read that if you fertilize too often they won’t bloom. Have you always fertilized monthly? Where will you overwinter them? Good luck! Love your videos & enjoy your garden

    • @HarmonyHillsHomeandGarden
      @HarmonyHillsHomeandGarden  3 года назад +1

      here's what the Proven Winners site says for the Rave hydrangea: "Fertilizing: The key to getting reblooming hydrangeas to produce new-wood flower buds is to keep them growing vigorously all summer. Hence, fertilizer can be beneficial. Apply a granular rose fertilizer in early spring, when the ground has thawed, and again in late spring. Never fertilize after late July; that can interfere with the plant going dormant."
      I think if you use a fertilizer that's too high in nitrogen it can lead to too much foliar growth at the expense of flowers. But if you use a RoseTone or similar product, it should be ok, as long as you stop fertilizing in July.
      Thanks for visiting and the kind words!

    What size is your green house,can you keep plants in your green house doing winter months. What kind of material is your greenhouse covered with? I live in Chicago Illinois, very cold in winter months and can have a lot of snow. Thank you for any help you can give.⛄️

    Why would you dig up the plants due to being under the tree, and put them into pots just to put them back under the tree?

    • @HarmonyHillsHomeandGarden
      @HarmonyHillsHomeandGarden  5 месяцев назад

      The soil is the problem, not the light. so they'll thrive in the potted soil, and the light is perfect for them.
