  • The small fishing village of Pittenweem, its name derived from the Pictish word 'Pit' or 'Pett' (meaning 'place') and the Gaelic 'na h-Uaimh' (meaning 'of the caves'), lies on the east coast of Scotland in an area known as the East Neuk of Fife.
The small coves and inlets are host to many caves, such as the nearby Caiplie Caves and St. Fillans Cave (its use dating back to the 7th century, and used as an Augustinian priory in the 13th century). These days, Pittenweem is a busy little fishing harbour and its sea front houses are a popular inspiration for many artists.
