Wow what bittersweet memories for you. When you are fortunate to be able to work on such magnificent vessels the memories stay with you forever. What a tragedy.
hello cristian I cant say why but this magnificent vessel is on my mind and its demise is tormenting my dreams what a terrible thing to happen I picture all the exquisite luxury all the money all the places she took her owners to. down she now lays unloved unwanted like an albatross. what is her wealth now, nothing but salvage even if she could be raised and refloated who on God's good earth would want to sail her again. I am simply an ordinary person I'm a retired nurse then my husband died recently, and now I'm just a normal widow which makes me a no-one, but until 2 years ago I was a proud owner of a 34foot Bavarian yacht and we had her from new and we loved her and the sea very much indeed in fact when my time comes we will both be scattered at sea. maybe my love of yachts is why this sinking is on my mind 24 /7. I wish you a good day Thank you for your time love from me in Australia x
Just heard the retracted keel was up. Operator error in my opinion. With the keel in that state it had no pendulum effect and the force on the mast and hull itself just flipped the yacht.
Uninformed. The design was a stub keel, long and shallow draft" that contains the ballast. The "centreboard" rotates into the stub keel and in most cases is not part of righting moment but is there to improve sailing efficiency. A lifting keel is completely different. See my other comment about yachts in general are designed to survive knockdowns without sinking.
@@antc5010the technical specifications, from the manufacturer, disagree with what you are saying. It had a retractable keel which could be extended from 4 to 9 meters.
@@Slonge92 The technical specs in a video like this are for less technical people with large wallets. I have photos of Salute on the hard during a refit and drawings of sister vessel Pathalassea, showing a long stub keel (4.05m draft) and within the stub the pivoting "centreboard" is housed. When rotated down by 2 hydraulic rams the draft is 9.83m.
I think saying that was the cause is an assumption. The keel design was modified from sister ships to counter the effect of the single 73m mast. The keel design is a stub keel, long and shallow draft that allows the "centreboard" to rotate into. This avoids intrusion of the centreboard into the hull compared to a lifting keel design. I have not found whether or not the "centreboard" is part of the righting moment, but it is certainly designed to improve sailing performance upwind. Other factors are at play. Most ocean yachts are designed to survive a knockdown or broach when the tip of the mast touches the water and they do not sink. A survivor of Bayesian speaks of cabin "windows" breaking after the yacht healed. I think the investigation is likely to point to design relating to mass water ingress. How else would a yacht of this size constructed of aluminium sink so quickly?
@@antc5010i agree with a lot of what you wrote , the new owner of the yatchs builders is blaming the crew for not being ready for the storm , he also said hatches and windows left open because of the hot weather would cause the ingress of water , all the yachts i worked on the guests wanted the air con on in that case hatches wouldn,t be open. And just a thought if the keel was down or half way down would the force of a sudden knockdown be enough to make the keel box fail and let the sea in ?
@@antc5010 I think it was a lifting keel with a 200 ton lead bulb not a centreboard. It has to go beyond 90 degrees as that is the point of maximum righting moment. With the keel down it would have to go to about 120 before inverting . with the keel up it would be less but still around 90 degrees. I definitely think you might be right about the windows. Old boats did not trust windows and had portholes. With windows which came into yachts in the 1950s though far smaller than these monsters, you had wooden boards to put over them for a long voyage.
