  • GMC Canyon Towing Review 2017 4cyl Crew Cab Work truck real world opinion. After having this truck for almost a year. I averaged 21mpg short distance trips more on longer highway trips. I also towed a few heavy trailers just to see how it would do.

    Best video review I've found on the 2.5. The base model in a v6 is hard to find in this part of Texas for some reason. I went ahead and purchased the 4 cylinder and I don't have any regrets. Good daily driver. What's funny is I'm going down the same 20 mile stretch of highway to work as the fella in the v6 or v8 is going and in the moment what's the difference besides fuel economy. At the end the day I'd rather get out as cheap as possible than have more hp and use more fuel to travel from one point to the next. Thanks for the video and take care.

    Good Video, Just got the same truck about a month ago(got a good deal as a leftover 2017) as an around town truck so I could give the old F250 a break. Wasn’t expecting much out of a GM 4 banger and i do have to say so far been pretty impressed with its towing capabilities and overall good ride. Would definitely recommend to anyone not looking to tow anything heavier than 3-4 thousand pounds on flat roads every now and then and anyone looking for some good fuel consumption numbers.

    Hello there! Thanks for the info! I’m in my second Colorado, this ones a Crew Cab W/T very similar to yours, with the same Convenience Package and Appearance Package. But mines a V6,4x4, with Tow Package and Skid Plates that cost me just under 33k. In white. We tow a 4,500 lbs 22’ Travel Trailer on a fairy regular 4-6 times a year, with a 4 month trip in the last one that was the same only an Extended Cab. In Black instead of white. With the V6 we averaged 14 on the 4,000+ mile trip, but just commuting 18-24 mpg. I have to tell you though, the V6 8 speed is a great combo!

    I just picked up a 2018 Colorado extended cab WT with a 6-speed manual transmission 4 cylinder with the appearance and convenience package for less than $20,000 and it pulls a 3500 pound boat with no issue as long as it's flat. My only gripe is these things really need a turbo for the four cylinder models. Also took me about 20 minutes to figure out how to get the truck in reverse.

    The trailer has a weight of 3120 lbs empty. Its GVWR is 7000 lbs, minus its load capacity of 3880 lbs, gives you the total of 3120 lbs. Within the 3500 pound rating. The truck does a good job pulling the trailer too.

    • @jeremysmith9868
      @jeremysmith9868 4 года назад

      I am sorry, but the truck's 3500-pound rating means that your rig can haul 380lbs (3500 - 3120). This includes passengers and truck cargo. I, for instance, weigh 230 lbs. and have a 50 lb toolbox in the truck box. This decreases the hauling capacity by another 280 lbs. The 1490 pound payload means that you shouldn't have to worry about overloading the tongue, though. However, he is using an aftermarket hitch and didn't show us the tow rating of his hitch which may or may not be rated for 3500 lbs. The ball also has is own tow rating. So the overall towing capacity of his rig is the lowest rating of these four items: the truck, the hitch, the ball, and the trailer. There are aluminum trailers that are lighter than 3120lbs and would increase his hauling capacity. The diesel variant also has an increased tow capacity and tow package to include trailer brakes and electronic sway control.

      I think as long as you stay off of steep hills, you’re fine with 2wd. I bought a new set of Cooper Adventurer at3 S4 tires for my 2008 4x4 Dodge 1500, and I haven’t used 4x4 once in the blizzard we had in Missouri. Didn’t spin a bit until I got on one big hill. That truck doesn’t have any added weight, a limited slip rear, or traction control. A Canyon with 2wd will have no problem with a good set of tires. Just drive with caution.

    I believe GM rates this power train to be able to tow up to 3500 lbs. For most consumers/DIY types this is probably adequate. However, the V6, 8-speed makes more sense for hauling heavy and towing over 2,500 lbs regularly. I noticed the 6-speed having a hard time to get into 6th gear albeit heavy trailer attached but on flat surface. This would not work well on any incline since that transmission would be downshifting constantly. What are your thoughts? Have you driven the truck on hills without trailer or cargo? How did it do?

    • @luckylawnboy
      @luckylawnboy  6 лет назад +4

      Ecclesia Militante yeah every day hauling the diesel or v6 would do better. But this is a commuter vehicle and I normally just tow a single axel trailer with a mower or atv at around 2500-3000 no issues what so ever. Both trailers in this video were too heavy and not what this truck is designed to do but if you needed too on occasion as you can see it will get it done. These are great trucks rides nice I get an average of 20+ mpg and can tow small trailers with no issue!

Been recommending these to my boss when he upgrades trucks. We rarely tow more than 1 zero turn or walk behind, weedeater, and blower per truck. One of the trucks we got is a Tacoma 4x4 with the 4 banger and a manual, and it’ll pull the trailers all day so I can imagine this truck will really have no issue.

      @no candy the 4 cylinder diesel is ok but if u compare a gas v6 to a na gas 4 cylinder no difference in economy. The 4 cylinder uses a lower gear to get it to move so it ends up being the same fuel economy. Meaning it takes more rpm to move the truck. The dealer just likes to sale 4 cylinders so they can make more money. A 4 cylinder weighs 40 pounds less then a v8 witch means if they can use less metal to produce an engine and upsale by stating better economy they can make more money with less material cus it takes 40 pounds less material to produce a 4 cylinder then an 8 cylinder. Nd you get shitty power with same economy. Just by a v8 or a diesel.

      There's a lot of misconceptions about towing. I've hauled a 5K trailer with a 2000 Honda Odyssey a few times no problem. Granted if I was doing that all the time it would be a different story.
      A '95 Civic could haul that and heavier depending on pin weight. Trucks, especially full size ones, are simply safer and last longer while doing so. Occasional towing isn't the same as frequent towing.
