Theory of Constraints (TOC) 3 Bottle Oiled Wheels Demonstration
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 4 июл 2012
- Practical demonstration of how the Theory of Constraints (TOC) can help you to improve your business. Three identical bottles of water flowing at different rates. The challenge is to maximize the flow through your bottleneck and to do it in a spirit of calmness. The Oiled Wheels approach gives you both simultaneously.

Best video I have ever seen to illustrate Theory of Constraints!!
Thanks so much for sharing and open our eyes to new ways of thinking!
Thank you Maria, I am glad it could add some value to you.
It is a paradigm shift when Arrie says "TOC is not about de-bottlenecking the Operations but increase the flow thru the bottleneck" - true eye opener for me in terms of communicating "What is TOC?". Thanks Arrie
Thanks a lot for the practical demonstration of TOC. The demonstration also reveals the sad reality of the "common" business practices nowadays: most people simply whip their way through the bottleneck (A approach) without much thought, a small number of people think and find more smooth ways (B approach), but only very few are daring enough to find the easiest and the best ways (C approach). It is those who adopt approach C who really change the way we live
I appreciate your comment. The mental frames responsible for the sad reality of the typical business is difficult to overcome. Those who grasp it experience what we see in the bottles.
What is optimized in demo 2 and 3, is the flow of air which constrained the flow of water. This is an example of devising a way for minimizing the friction of opposing processes, namely the flow of water out vs. the flow of air in.
Thanks Ashley, As I receive comments on this video, I realise that it talks to more than just TOC. I have also learnt that the second bottle also signify the value of facilitating a daily alignment in an organisation in only a few minutes every day. Some organisations who do this in a daily Ops Room of less than 20 minutes, experience phenominal alignment of all its operations and services. The ultimate is to reach that state of superflow in a sense of calmness, not so easy to achieve, but worth while. I think it also applies to our personal lives.
Arrie van Niekerk.
Great way to ilustrate that the straw (mindset) is the missing link to ensure sustainable deployment of most TOC Strategies
Thank you for sharing
Thank you Eduardo, your comment is very precious. Mindset is the key issue, supported with some measure of good leadership.
I saw this demonstration live today the the SA Geo Tech conference and really enjoyed Arrie's talk on TOC!
How can i ever thank you for this amazing video.
The simplicity is thought provoking and practical knowledge about constraint towered high in your presentation. Thanks for your work!
Thank you very much Uche. It is still a remarkable journey and we are seeing really good results in a very short time frame.
Loved the demonstration here !
Such a beautifully simple demonstration of optimised flow
Awesome demonstration of ToC. Will include it in my Agile & Lean training, referring to Arie van Nieuwkerk (by-nc-sa). Thank you Arie.
Thanks for the video, Arrie! Great example of how to handle bottlenecks.
Main insight for me at 5:43: "
If you follow the right approach you can eventually get both super flow and a spirit of calmness simultaneously."
Thank you for the complement. I think you are correct - this is something to strive for and we have seen it happen a number of times. It is deeply inspiring and the results are exceptional.
This is a very simple way of demonstrating very powerful concepts. Muchas gracias Arrie.
Helps a lot in understanding the basic concepts of TOC even to a lay person.
Great explanation, great video!
LOVE this demonstration on many levels - optimized flow - yes-
Observation on B- the incoming and outgoing flows are optimized to form the sweet spot of the vortex - and there is an inverse relationship between noise and signal and chaos and flow - also speculation: - the ideal flow for the system may NOT in fact be the fastest ….
suggestion a - slow mo view of each to review more closely dynamics
suggestion b-long term test but sped up -i suspect equilibrium produces entropy in the 3rd bottle over time
brilliant demonstration.
Wonderful demonstration!
really good demonstration!
You helped me understand the concept in very simple manner. Thank yoh so much.
Very good demo Arrie Thanks
Bedankt voor de duidelijke uitleg :)
It was an interesting illustration and very well explained the Theory of Constraint in an organisation
Constraints are always there, what we need to do is utilizing simple means to get best flow out.
thank you so much. so easy to understand :D
wonderful explantion
Spot On!!!
that was a good demo ..
Brilliant.
Hi the experiment C video had been fast played, it takes 8 seconds when you show it first but later it says 4 seconds, either way C is more efficient. Thanks many for explaining it this simpler way.
good demonstration
0:34 best to start here
buenísimo ejemplo de TOC throughtput rate
Genius!
(Although I didn't see anything about oil or wheels :)
To add to this, This experiment helps us to understand the positive impact of structuralising the Botlleneck points, with clear demarcation for Core & Non core activities !!
Very cool.
1 Stable flow is best illustrated by the bottle ___ demonstration.
2 The 3-bottle demonstration illustrates that the Theory of Constraints is about increasing the flow in -----------------
3 It also illustrates that production processes can achieve super-flow and---------------- simultaneously.
GOOD ONE

excellent illustrations. note though there is contamination in C. with human saliva, B. has spill so some loss. if a precious vial than A is best!
Excellent Demo of TOC Arrie...but why do you call it Oiled Wheels?
nice jacket bro

3:18 Bottle B start doesn't address the _effort_ of harnessing Bottle A "turmoil" to _create_ the commendable improvement of Bottle B flow?! Energy's never "lost" in Nature. It's merely transformed. 5:00 Absence of Pressure *after* the induced air burst, that is. Good demo, but claims of effect higher than _actual._
too much repetition... thnaks anyway.
