Competition Lifts are testers beyond a certain training age. They test overall strength in that movement pattern. You utilize the entire body and strength of maximum possible muscles to lift heaviest weights in the shortest possible legally allowed ROM. Close variations of lifts are the builders. They allow to target or prioritize certain muscle groups for the purpose of strengthening and hypertrophy while still preserving the main/parent movement pattern. For example, front squat helps focus quads while still maintaining squat pattern. Incline and CGBP better target the pecs and triceps respectively than competition style bench. Assistance exercises are compound exercises that don't resemble testers or builders and hence stimulate the muscles in a different way . Chin ups, for example, engage the lats through longest possible ROM. Rows are also good for this. No deadlift variation can do that. Accessory exercises are the isolation work to fine tune subtle details to improve cosmetic looks of the muscles from aesthetic reasons particularly for bodybuilding competitions. Curls, extensions, raises, fly, etc.
What would you consider an incline bench press for instance? I have a tweek in the shoulder, and I can handle incline much easier, so I wonder what is it - regarding the bench press?? Awesome distinction, thanks !
I think a lot of people don't talk much besides spotting and congratulating because I know for me I don't want to interrupt anyones workout. Some people have a limited tome o get shit done and I don't want to waste it by talking to them. With Aj's example of testers and builders - would you stay the straight bar close grip bench is a tester or builder?
Love hearing AJ's thoughts on strength.
Love this.
Just like JL said at SWIS about the GHR being a builder and the Nordic Curl being the tester
