I love the riffing on pleasure dome and girl gone bad, so sad we will never hear anything new from the king. The solo on out of love with Alex’s snare and Mike bass is absolutely legendary
I knew the singles from the album 1984 when they came out - I was 11 - and loved them. I probably started to listen to the whole album around 20 years ago and there are some absolute killer tracks on it. Thanks for the lesson, Marty, the G chord is genius too
I’m a Van Halen fanatic first, but it sure would be cool to be there for the AO. I’m watching it live right now. Learning some VH riffs on RUclips during the commercial breaks and coincidentally noticed your comment. Take it easy!
As a VH fan since the start I listen to the music first and the lyrics 2nd. I always thought Ed’s compositions were musically awesome with clear riffs that drove the song forward or made statements. The spots where he made scrapes, and the “waaahh” chord at the end of his riff is to me a way for him to set the song far apart from the standard rock sounds of the day and the time he came up. I heard that they had learned about 400 cover songs to play at the clubs. So glad he was sick of cover tunes and made his own. Dave was Mr Cover tune king. Lol. Keep on Keeping EVH alive. Maybe soon I’ll get onto learning some of these riffs myself.
You’ve given us Zepplin, Kiss, VH, and more recently. For me, in each lesson it’s not always getting it all down, but there always seems to be a really cool technique I grab. These are the little details that make me think and practice. Thanks for the small gems. Cheers Marty!
I feel like people have mostly slept on this song. I've been playing that little double stop bend riff that Dave kind of mimics which starts around 2:19 into the song for decades.
I agree. I think it gets overshadowed by the hits in this banger album. But when you ride it out and jam to GGB and HOP you realize how badass Eddie and Al were as a unit and how groovey Eddie played. I love that riff you reference. I play it a lot too. Also that intro run when the solo starts is so "Steve Vai" before Vai was even known. Eddie was brilliant. 😎🤘
Oh man, that guitar of yours is absolutely top of the mark. Excellent lesson Marty thank you. Killer VH track... I just played with my Rockman for about 3 hours, now wanted to tackle this lesson. WInter Saturdays like this are good for something. 😁🎸
It's such a great wending. GGB and House Of Pain are such wicked jams. Eddie and Al's playing are brilliant. I think it demonstrates and captures how well they actually played together. Just wicked.
Awesome! Damm what a killer song! And you're spot-on, Marty! Edward was just in some sort of a mental ZONE when he wrote the '84 record. Proof is in reading the (incredible) Ted Templeman book. He discusses Edward's mental and physical state when he was working it up. Kind of like a Motzart thing. He almost killed himself doing it. But look what he turned out! AWESOME vid! I'm going to work on this.
Eddie is the King! Can you emulate Eddie? Well yes, after years and years, and years of practice... But is that the point? No. The thing about Eddie's playing, why Guitarists Love it. It's FUN... Eddies playing is Cool as hell, and FUN... If you forget the FUN in playing Eddies riffs, you are missing the point... I remember laying on my back, in the dark, just playing along with the radio (was the early 90's, so radio was a thing). I didn't get everything right, but Dam, it was just FUN to do. That is what playing the guitar should be. That is what Eddie Van Halen brought to the Guitar World, F'n Fun Guitar riffs... Yes, be Serious about getting better, but Don't forget it's meant to be Fun, and dam well have Fun playing... That's the beauty of Marty's lessons. It's Not about being Perfect, it's about Learning, but having Fun while learning. And having Fun with what you learned...
I think there's moment where Ed and Al may have jammed on it a little during its creation in the Diver Down era but I don't think it was ever on the setlist from what I've seen!
Eddie was the King of Swing for sure. I don’t think he even thought much about these seemingly odd rhythms. It was just a DNA connection between him and his brother.
I never really liked the lyrics and vocals of this song. On the other hand, it would have made a great instrumental piece with those guitar riffs that sound so heavy.
Yeh weird lyrics. Kinda dark. But I never listen to words lol! I love the jam. Such a wicked song. It's pretty much an instrumental. Roth sings and gets outta the way pretty quick. 😂
They might like the music, or the shiny cars on the covers, but would you renounce your own thumb for their collecting habits?! I don't know. The pink panther?! I think not. I'm still going with my body...
I've got to say on Girl Gone Bad, they were beyond beast mode, some of the most awesome music ever!
Couldn't agree more! 🤘😎🤘
Eddie Van Halen is the KING OF SWING!!!!!
I love the riffing on pleasure dome and girl gone bad, so sad we will never hear anything new from the king. The solo on out of love with Alex’s snare and Mike bass is absolutely legendary
This and "Take your whiskey home" are probably my two favorite Van Halen songs. Thanks Marty!
Those are both wicked jams for sure! 💪🎸
that flat-two (G chord) hits so hard... this is why it's the heaviest, darkest tune on 1984. thanks for the great lesson, Marty !
I totally agree. It super heavy and dark. Menacing. Eddie really knew how to play sonically with our emotions. 😎🤘
No doubt! That’s what makes this riff so badass/brutal. I can’t imagine the volume ever being loud enough when this riff comes in.

Going on to 1 am in Melbourne Australia Marty you are the king God Bless You
Well thanks! Ed's the King, I am merely a jester in his court. Haha. 🤣

Excellent! Really liking your newer thumbnails too 👍. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks! Glad you like the new look! 😃 I've been having fun with the thumbnails 😎

It’s always a pleasure to help you get your shred on man! 😎🤘
Thank you again for breaking down Van Halen into small pieces! Great lesson!! 🎸
My pleasure! Thanks for watching dude.
So f’n great dude!! All time fav craziness from the king!!
Thanks! Eddie was a monster for sure. 😃🤘
I needed a Van Halen lesson from you today Marty.....going to mess with this one now; thank you.

I also like the demo version it amazes me how it evolved it to this thanks Marty as always 😊
I agree. Very interesting. You're welcome man!
I hit the jackpot finding thI s channel
What a sick riff!! Love your content!
Oh man, that guitar of yours is absolutely top of the mark. Excellent lesson Marty thank you. Killer VH track... I just played with my Rockman for about 3 hours, now wanted to tackle this lesson. WInter Saturdays like this are good for something. 😁🎸

You're very welcome man. 😎🤘
Appreciate the VH vds u Rock Marty🤘🎸🎵🎶🎵🎶🎵🎶🎵🎶
You're very welcome. I appreciate you watching 😎🤘
This was always my favorite part of the entire album and I still wonder if anyone else feels the same.
It's such a great wending. GGB and House Of Pain are such wicked jams. Eddie and Al's playing are brilliant. I think it demonstrates and captures how well they actually played together. Just wicked.
The end, where he’s just riffing, is transcendent. Eddie just being Eddie
@@dr.buzzvonjellar8862 I totally agree. That fade out is one of the best ends to an album I’ve heard.
I love this song ive never heard a better ending to a album than this 🎸🎸
Thanks Marty cool 🤘
You're very welcome dude! 😎🤘

Hey, my dude, could you please do Source Of Infection? One of my all-time favorite riffs!
Did they ever play this live? I’ve looked and never seen anything. Such a great song and tone. Pure metal.
I think there's moment where Ed and Al may have jammed on it a little during its creation in the Diver Down era but I don't think it was ever on the setlist from what I've seen!
@ Also if you haven’t seen it, The Retro Guitarist has a full no vocals cover which is 🔥
p.s. RUclips has it live in Montreal 1984... very easy to find
@ sweet
Eddie was the King of Swing for sure. I don’t think he even thought much about these seemingly odd rhythms. It was just a DNA connection between him and his brother.
Gene plays the demo version with his band 😮
It's cool how these ideas resurfaced and stuck around
How about loss of control very interesting tune 😂
Great song! I actually am looking at this one for the future. 😃🎸
You covered up the second part bro
I'm sorry man. Oof

@ 15.55, miss few notes imo . More" swinging lil bridge".
True it's so weird
Marty you can’t see what you played with your tab covering the guitar from 5-7min…
Ah crap!!! I'm sorry man
@ still awesome 😎🙏
Can’t see
Sorry man. 😞
They might like the music, or the shiny cars on the covers, but would you renounce your own thumb for their collecting habits?! I don't know. The pink panther?! I think not. I'm still going with my body...
Nice! 👍
Thanks 🙏
