I love the connection to the Hebrew letter and to the side door always open to come in and know our Creator GOD... while we are still in earth... Thank you for sharing this inspiring story.

My dad just sent me this story and told me that he wants me to do this when he departs. I think this year was the only year i missed Kol Nidre - i didnt book ticket at the local shul. I felt bad but like you said, its never too late :)

It's a good story and the Chazan did an AMAZING thing for that guy...above and beyond!
But I can't help thinking that if he would have invited this man to eat with him and say a blessing before and especially after the meal that would have been a lot better.
What's AMAZING too is that G-d cared enough for this guy with such a weak connection to orchestrate this whole thing so he didn't miss out. WOW. Lots of lessons here!

For completeness sake worth mentioning that the mentioned Westend-Synagogue before the war was the Liberal/Reform Synagogue. You can still see the (unused) organ pipes. Phenomenal acoustics, large reverb. The orthodox synagogues were completely destroyed in Kristall-Nacht.
