- In the 1990s, Boeing explored the creation of a new aircraft that would build upon existing aircraft, concepts and more and would see them enter the next era of travel. Bringing efficiency, environmentally friendly travel and great economic came the birth of the 7E7 or, as it would eventually be known as the Boeing 787 Dreamliners. In this video, I explore the birth of the aircraft.

Just finished a ten-hour flight on a 787. It was much more comfortable than previous flights on other aircraft at the same distance. I did not feel as exhausted
@rokiesenseiHow are they worse than other 787s? JAL is the only airline offering 8 abreast in 787 economy
Forget the different names. This plane was a game changer because it was ALL COMPOSITE. The 1st ever this size. 20% reduction in weight vs aluminum means better range and efficiency! I was the program mgr for the NASA AST Composite Wing program which was the precursor technology to this 787 effort. I worked @ Douglas Aircraft and after the Boeing/MDC merger in 97', we collaborated with Seattle on this. Your Welcome!!
Outstanding!!
I have flown on the A350 and the 787 , Boeing takes the day
Why was that?
I have flown with both multiple times - haven't noticed major differences. They both have more room for passengers. Presurresation+humidity in A350 are the best any aeroplane has - i.e. closest to earth level conditions. After which comes A380, then 787.
@@toms5996 true
@@toms5996 The A350 and 787 have the exact same pressurization level at 6,000 feet. The only 2 airliners that have this. The A380 comes next with a level of about 6,128 to 7,000 feet.
Clearly you are lying or a fanboy since A350 has in my experience is quieter, superior interiors, wider seats and most importantly , it has the tail camera which looks awesome in flight especially if you are in one of the non window seats...
Would like to see the A350 and 747 explained
I have flew with 787 dreamliner 4 times in 8-9 hours flight to saudi arabia and I'm thoroughly satisfied with the comfort level. It's way better than my previous flight in a chartered 747.
Fly A350
My experience with Dreamliner was fantastic. I did a coast to coast flight from Jersey to LAX and it was one of the most comfortable flights I have ever experienced. The 777 is a Cadillac of a plane, the dreamliner was more of a Corvette. Big windows, sporty, comfortable...very nice. Dreamliner moniker is apropos.
The other three nicknames for the 787 are horrible. The name Dreamliner really fits. Amazing economics, fuel efficiency, and impressive passenger comfort is definitely is a huge step for long haul air travel.
Why do you think it's not made any sales over the last few years?
@@stephenlockett1465 problems
@@kirilmihaylov1934 no!
@@stephenlockett1465 because no airline was in a fit state to order them
really, I like the name E-liner. It greatly reflects what the 787 is: efficient
Dreamliner sounds all right to me
Dreamliner is appropriately named. Smooth, quiet, well done on KLM; my flights on the B787-10 (JFK AMS DXB ) were fabulous. Service was spectacular, vegan options were adequate, Seat K9 was perfect. Not so perfect was K1 (even a business class 180 seat can be too close to the bathrooms and front galley)
I wonder which airline provides the best Premium Economy experience in the 787-10 , 9 & 8.
I remember watching a documentary regarding A380 and some Airbus executive was explaining why they choose to make A380.
His explanation was according to them the "hub" model will continue to exist, where small jets would brought passengers to "hub" from minor cities and from there the"big" airlines would loaded them into mega cities with their A380, while also explaining how Boeing's vision was different and how they are making planes to connect medium/small cities to eachother in long Trans Atlantic and Pacific distances bypassing the hub(the name of jet wasn't mentioned AFAIK).
I was like 9/10 yo and who never rode a plane and even then I am be like, "why we need stepover while we can do point to point journey?"
787 despite Boeings faults truly a "disruptor" like never before.
I find it funny that the 787's most sigbificant operators are UA and AA, which are hub & spoke airlines
Point-to-point has always existed with the 777 and A330.
And now the 350 outdoes the 787 when it comes to range.
There are many places that hub and spoke is still the best option.
Very informative. Continue with this series, please.
Great video, nice work Dan!
Nice idea! I like Globetrotting following aircraft families too! Keep it up!
Make a video about the A330 . People often see it as the 787 competitor.
Dreamliner>LITERALLY ANY OTHER NAME FOR THE PLANE.
Strato Climber harkens back to Strato Cruiser, so I understand the idea for the name, but Dreamliner was perfect because it is indeed a dream widebody aircraft.
To correct a statement in the video, Boeing have never focused on quad engine aircraft, since the 747 has been their only quad since the 707 that's not a military aircraft.
Boeing always looks at the future when designing new aircraft, whereas Airbus focuses on what it's done well and improve on it
The 787 cemented itself as the present and the future, which is why it's been so popular both with airlines as well as passengers.
And it's the only airliner that the air conditioning system doesn't get bleed air from the engines, that can be
contaminated with microscopic oil particles.
Not so good for covid then. They will not b used because of this.
I always wanted to pursue Aero Space Engineering, but I couldn't clear the exams due to health issue but passion remained deep inside. Since our house was very close to the Airport in Bangalore, Watching Boeing 747 series take-off of Landing was great delight to watch, that's when the love for Boeing started. I feel 747 Was a legendary Aircraft and in recent time the 787 series is a revolutionary Aircraft that started the competition in twin engine aircraft, Even today Boeing is technically very strong than any other commercial aircraft.
A380 would be amazing
Good vid, I love the 787.
I would like to see an A350 vs 787 comparison video
I’ve never heard of any controversy concerning the windows 😮
I hear that there was a comparison conducted with both the dreamliner, 777x and the A350. Although the A350 was the cheapest, it came out on top as far as quality and safety and other areas. Now that's what I hear guys. Very very nice. Please keep coming out with more vlogs!!
I flown both and the 787 is far better in every way.
Do you think there will be any airline that configures 787 (or A350 and A330NEO for that matter) economy in an asymmetrical 2-4-3 or 3-4-2 config?
Would love to hear about the 787-3, looks like Boeing made a mistake by discontinuing the sub type.
How about the same type of video on the A350?
Boeing really needs to start making profit with this program. Hopefully they'll be able to do this in 5 or 10 years (or whenever eventually).
I don't know, some (many?) think that it will never make a profit. It doesn't necessarily matter either as there are other ways in which a program can be a success. For example Airbus never made a profit on the A380, yet without the A380, the company wouldn't be what they are today and they wouldn't be making the profits they are. I believe that regardless of direct profit, the 787 has been a hugely important milestone for Boeing. If you remember the 1990s, everyone believed the A380 was the future of commercial aviation and Boeing was trying to generate some buzz with the utterly absurd Sonic Cruiser idea. Even when the "7E7" was announced the marked was initially sceptical. Airbus was of course dismissive of it (corporate PR at work....) but most clients and analysts bought their spin. But with the 787, Boeing lift their game considerably. Its composite content was proportionally more than twice that of the A380, they designed an extremely efficient assembly process with their prefab barrels approach and introduced new features (like a HUD being standard equipment for the first time on a civilian airliner). It made the A330 obsolete virtually overnight and took leadership away from Airbus on this particular market segment for decades. Without it, Boeing would now be in dire straits.
Can you make a video about Kuwait airways ❤
I find the Dreamliner quite noisy and uncomfortable compared to the 767 or 777. I have travelled on three different 787 airlines and all give the same experience .
NEW birth of the ERA boeing 787
Stratoclimber reminds me of the Stratocruiser. So i don't mind it.
But yeah it's still not a very catchy name...
maybe E liner
While being the best Boeing aeroplane by far - it started production in 2007 so 16 years ago. Why no changes to it? A350 (produced 2010-) has had 1 complete change and multiple variant re-designs during it's production and continues to have new variants.
That's because 777x is coming.
A350 is the best make a video about it
787-9, the longest ranged variety, falls short on range to both A350 versions. Obviously struggling on routes shorter than the opposition is accomplishing relatively easily & is being somewhat 'shown up' in the range department
Very true
I HATE the dimming windows with everything I have, the cabin crew can lock them to the dimmest so you can’t see out of them. The A350 has felt way more comfortable to me from experience
thats the airlines fault!
Well, goodluck flying on newer A350 since Airbus adopted dimmable windows. Crew has the chance to lock it so its a huge blow to you.
@@mxttyzw most A350’s don’t have that and IT’S AN OPTION, boeing 787 has the dimming windows as a feature you can’t remove
@@nickolliver3021 nope Boeing’s fault. It’s a feature no one can remove
@@maxsaviation9512 wrong. The airlines choose them as options.
The 787 has great economics for airlines and airlines love the type, it's just a shame that Boeing has had some many issues with the production of the 787.
Not only 787
well the 787 will prove itself that having issues with production wont matter so many years later in the future
Still refuse to fly 787 that are made in Charleston due to crappy quality control - that means won't fly JAL, ANA, American, Air Canada, Qatar's 787 routes. Only will fly 777 or Airbus.
It's just me, but the 2 engines that are huge looking on the plane, make them look out of place on the plane. I think the plane would look better with 4 smaller engines that combined use the same fuel as the 2 huge engines.
I love its round cute nose
Boeing still has no NMA so despite starting to finally execute well after a catastrophic decade that was made possible only by the ultimate success of the 787. The 787 is a known product the Boeing NMA is to date anyways non-existent which needs to change for Boeing to start moving forward.
The 787 was an unreal aircraft…until the A350 came out.
"...fantastic for the environment..." That is such a profoundly stupid thing to say. At best it is marginally less damaging to the environment than previous generations of aircraft.
Carbon fiber planes are the worst thing happened to aviation. They are soulless. If there is a fire, it will disintegrate faster than that sub. Good luck if they have to repair the fuselage after a damage
The SC production plant is a nightmare and Boeing management are a disaster. On top of that they have failed to market a mid market plane, so they have basically given up to Airbus. It is sad really, because they could easily do a 76Max with parts at hand as a gap filler...
Yes Boeing has had huge problems last 19 years or so
@@kirilmihaylov1934 Airbus has had huge problems in the last 20 years too
Why are you saying that the Production plant in SC is a nightmare? How is Boeing management a disaster? Boeing have not failed to market a plane to fit the mid market sector! This is not them giving up to airbus. They didn't do this becuase they needed to get their programs running solidly and that takes time., hence why no new plane yet
@@nickolliver3021 they have very well documented quality problems with the the SC plant. They also have labor issues and numerous Federal investigations there... Boeing management is only focused on their own salaries and dividends, not on company performance or anything else. Also very well documented. Boeing delayed and delayed on the NMA plane until finally cancelling it to wait for unicorn tech. In doing this they ceded the market to Airbus. All of this is extremely well documented. I would like to see Boeing succeed, but their management has been failing for the last two decades. All of this is indisputable, unless you are a Boeing exec with blinders on
@@nickolliver3021 my favorite Boeing troll
Sadly not a single person I’ve spoken to will fly the Dreamliner. The build quality is so poor that it’s just not worth the risk. I’ve cancelled 9 business class trips and re-booked with an Airbus.
How ridiculous. People become more extreme everyday
@@brkitdwn well Boeing
does have problems with 787
@@kirilmihaylov1934 Every aircraft maker from the beginning has had issues with their aircraft, including Airbus. They all thoroughly test their aircraft, however, issues do arise over time, and they are resolved.
I’d rather pick the Dreamliner than an Airbus XLR that is pushing its limits to put more fuel tanks.
