There is actually one instance I can compare it to. A year ago UFC fighter Jared Gordon was doing pre-fight media in a rematch following a no-contest where he got head-butted a few weeks prior. In the scrum, he said he suffered a concussion 'but was fine after a week.' MMA regulations state that concussions are a mandatory 30 day medical suspension from any training, and he was trying to fight before then.
Obviously the fight was cancelled after he said that. What obviously makes this one different is that Gordon was suffering from a concussion so it's unknown how voluntary the info he gave up truly was.

Sting reached a point in TNA where he was starting to wear shirts over his gear and have shirter matches, and I'll bet if you asked anyone aout Sting during Aces and Eights, they would have guessed he would be retired soon. For a guy known for being unusually reasonable for a wrestler, its amazing that he pushed on to not only work Wrestlemania before he retired, but have his actual retirement match nine years after a neck injury.
