He was one of my many teacher's over my 12 yrs @ Drummers collective and I studied with Kim for 10 of those 12 yrs,but I also took 2 lessons per week with 1 lesson from Kim and the other with Woody!! I also studied with Terry Bozzio in L.A and with Bonnie after Terry, and I'm telling you that Kim was and even in his after life was my favorite teacher of all of the aforementioned and he still is my favorite drummer all around not just jazz fusion etc but he really used cross rhythmic patterns wisely and was a player whose totally Original!! Does he sound like anyone but himself??? Rhetorical question....R.I.P Mr.Professor Kim Plainfield and I never stopped being extremely Dilligent as you embedded in me...Jeez I miss the bleep out of you!!! And we were to hook up after 30 yrs after his huge China tour...He sadly passed on soon there after returning from China! That's a very very sad demise for the entire world of drummers and all other musicians too!!! I frigging Love you my Teacher!!! I got to tell him after he contacted me upon seeing some of my numerous comments especially the one where I said you're as good as Gadd, as hoodvss Vinnie and as good as Dave W. But Kim you never tried to sound like a Gadd or Vinnie clone like so many of all these drummers today and he absolutely adored those comments and he knows full well that I mean what I say and always say what I mean....
wow! these guys really interact tight! they are so eager to make sth out of every idea, they virtually snap them out of each other's hand. and at the same time they're so energetic and precise and calm.... they really liberated the masters within :-)
Why so many people claim berklee's students are mechanical? Man, their playing is marvelous!!!!!!!!! Whether they sound mechanical or not is a matter of personality and that has nothing to do with Berklee. They provide people with the tools, and those use guys use them. To sound great you need first that "mechanical" knowloedge. Damn!!!!! these guys sound incredible!!!!!
Great group, Lincoln its an awesome bass player. I saw him here in Mexico when he came to play with the Hector Infanzon group. Even with the crappy audio of the forum Lincoln was in the pocket all the time.
these aren't students. about 7/8 of the school are terrible players. but most of the others are good engineers/business people/arrangers/synthesists/whatever.
Lincoln Goines - such a great 'musical' bass player and such a great guy! I learned so much from him, it's incredible.

Kim Plainfield
this is why i didn't end up going to this school, people like them who could show me up without hesitation
I love Lincoln's tone, but does anyone else hear the "G" string rubbing against the pickup? Beautiful soloing and phrasing though.

Scofield was from Berklee. As was Frisell. Not at all mechanical.
It sounds like Chick Corea's "Now He Sings, Now He Sobs"...
