Warren discusses his hybrid approach to mixing in-the-box and through an analog SSL console. He walks through a mix showing both the plug-in processing done in Pro Tools and on each channel on the SSL. In part 2, he breaks down the guitars, keys & vocals in the mix.
Produce Like A Pro is a website which features great tips to help the beginning recordist make incredible sounding home recordings on a budget.

Warren, Warren, Warren. You are the best. I was just mixing a song fairly busy rock song with several distorted guitar parts. Got the the "loudening" stage(the term mastering is a bit heavy for me, I reserve that for the pros) and there were some frequencies that were just coming up far too much. Well, guess what? It was 2.5khz. So I pulled it down. It was whistling at me, and suddenly - voila! Guitars weren't constantly whistling, and things were much better. I had just seen this video and remembered your comment about not liking 2.5khz on guitars that much... kind of gave me the willies... Enjoy the videos!

As a working studio musician/composer (mainly TV music) this is a great lesson in how to take it to the next level. Much appreciated. I'm intrigued how you manage to control the low boosts and reverb on individual instruments. I'm usually afraid of getting out of my depth with clutter so it is great to see that it's possible. You make it look deceptively easy! My question is, could you maybe do a video of how to transition from the TV/production music world into the collaborative songwriting world?

    • @Producelikeapro

Hi deluxerecordings thanks for the great comment. If you notice on the console and in pro tools I do quite a bit of low cutting to keep the lows and low mids clean. Great pair of hybrid mixing videos, thanks so much. My question is: You EQ first in the box, and then again in the console, with different cuts and boost on each. how do you decide which one you do where? My guess, correct me if I'm wrong: could it be that your in the box EQ shapes the individual tones, and the console EQ is how you make all channels sound good as a mix leaving space for each other, etc? Thanks again!

  • @FVDaudio

Clearly seen as the sculpting sonorities between editing and digital processes in conjunction with the taste and the power of the console, even more by giving the example of Pultec, sensasional tone undoubtedly complements! Wow.
These videos just blew the lid off of audio production for me.
    I'm brand new to this.
I've played guitar for many years, but only saw this end from that end.
So, watching this process happen was like opening that door that I was hanging out next to but never went through before.
This was like seeing someone like SRV in action, but the other half of the equation.. and no less an art.
Now I'm hooked and it wouldn't surprise me one bit if I watched this 30 times AND took notes because that's how I am.
So that when I go into a situation where everything has been tracked, I won't be staring at the DAW wondering what to do and where to start.
Of course I won't have the badass protools rig or the console or the outboards, but even with a Behringer and free VSTs, I can apply the same techniques (to some extent) and come out with something far superior to what i would have before I saw this.
You know.. knowledge is something that you generally cant get by spending tons of money. You have to put in the time and the love, so if I seem overly impressed its because I can fully appreciate the value of what I just saw.
Kinda like the difference between seeing that hot girl for the 1st time when everyone else has hung out with her for years. Scuze me while I pick my jaw up off the floor... just go on about your business while I stand over here and gawk.
Ive been subbed to the Tim Pierce channel since the 1st week it came out and oddly enough, here he is on these tracks.
I don't believe it fate, but that's pretty fate-ish. So, I'm subbing to this channel in the name of hot girls, Tim Pierce, and fate.
NO way I can say thanks that does justice to what I've learned here. This is the most excited Ive been from learning something in years. But. I'll try.. THANKS for the great video!
Now I'm off to watch more.

+Produce Like A Pro HI Warren! Great to hear back. It's an honor. I've taken a forced short (hopefully) pause because i have to set up dual boot Windows/Linux on this system. Talk about polar opposites on the satisfaction spectrum...
I have a few general thoughts (yea already!) on audio production that I'd like to pass along. Hope you don't mind. They are basically curiosities that I think are interesting,
First, I've seen a few RUclips channels on audio production (This one being the best BY FAR) and one of the first things I noticed was that each channel seemed to have a niche genre of music that they focus on. Yours is generally on the rock side, and others are hip hop, and then Ive seen trance/electro. and metal. I really haven't seen anything that was mostly acoustic yet (whatever the genre).
.. but this is one of the ways I see recording being a whole new world of endless possibilities.
.. Since each of these genres have developed their own unique framework in approaching production. (this is with the understanding that each producer has his/her own way of doing things.) do you think there is value in picking up the techniques and experiment with applying them in your realm?
For instance, I saw a video by someone I assume was a well regarded producer in trance music. I have no way of knowing.. I dont know anything about that music.
But the very first thing that came to mind was, I wonder how Warren would approach doing something like that which is probably something he isn't really comfortable with?
..and further I wonder if there is actual solid production value in doing things that are outside of the comfort zone?
... like me doing classical on guitar. I may learn something but since classical isn't my thing, would it really be worth looking over that fence?
For some reason, I feel like learning "outside the comfort zone" would usually translate better in the studio production than it would on an instrument.
Just wondered what your thoughts are? Maybe someday you' could pick something completely out of your norm and show us how you would approach it?
Sorry, my brain has a mind of its own and when I get enthused it goes into turbo mode. ..and sorry for so many words. I honestly meant to say thanks and hello.

Warren, thank you for the vid! Hybrid mixing is really a cool thing; analog summing glues everything and analog compressors add thickness to tracks and together they sound wide and they have "body". The topic of mixing becomes much clearer to me after watching your videos! Could you please also make a video about mastering especially the "ambience recovery", 'cause after it mixes sound more wide and open. I spend a lot of time on watching different stuff on youtube and reading articles on that, but still this topic is unrevealed. Thanks in advance!

Hi Warren. I've watched this video before, but I just watched it again as I now have a somewhat hybrid set up finally working in my studio. One question, How do you bring your console back in to the DAW? Is it coming in through the BUS (I noticed you mentioned your BUS compression) and if so, do you then print the tracks down to two or do you print multiple BUS tracks then do a final summing in the box, or do you use each channel as an "Insert" and take the signal straight back in from each strip? I love what the SSL adds in character, and I do have the Waves SSL bundle... but I also have a MIDAS console that I use for tracking, but I find the EQ's very musical on it, and I'd love to use them at the other end as well.
    Thanks Warren.
    Danny

Hi Warren, One of the thing i have always been curious about on Hybrid mixing setups is your process for "printing" the character and sound that the SSL has on each individual track.
In other hybrid mixing setups, ive seen the channel inserts go out to the converters and return FROM the converters to the channels. Obviously you have standard mixing board functionality after that, and you would here all of this through your monitors if they are coming off that board. At what point does the EQ, compression, and reverb returns from the console come back to the converters for the final render. Do you let everything process out live back to a single stereo return?
Would you record inputs from each mix bus? Any help understanding this would help. Most of the things i find online are not terribly helpful at the moment.

Thank you for the insight Mr Huart. It is well appreciated. I'm mixing on a SSL Matrix and I am currently doing the same type of thing. More so, Summing the stems on the console. I would assume you have enough channels on your Audio Interface/s to feed the console? My real question is, how do you print those mixes? Do you go back into PT? Also do you have any other processing on your mix bus other than the SSL Bus Comp? Is is safe to say that you do not have a mix bus within the DAW, that contains processing? I do and the routing is currently doing my head in as I need to monitor the mixbus within the DAW along with the stems bussed through the console back into DAW and print inside PT. Thank you again for letting us into your world. Kind Regards.

    1. How hard are you hitting your center section (Mix Bus) On the console in a typical Heavy rock mix? Are you going into the red? Keeping it at zero? How is your gain staging on individual channels?
    2. When you print back into pro-tools via your larvy Convertors how hot are you Printing?

warren, I may have missed this in the video, but how do you keep all your settings on the console straight? In other words, if this is a session from some time ago, how do you keep track of your console settings for recall? I'm going to be adding some hybrid mixing with 500 series stuff soon and I've been trying to figure out how to keep note of that with recall. Thanks! Great video! -Jake

Hi Jacob Longoria thanks for the great question! Luckily the SSL has total recall and all the settings are saved onto a disc. Warren, I noticed you have a few 500 series modules. What is your opinion on utilizing these for hybrid mixing in home studios? Many of us don't have access to an SSL or API board, but can afford to build a decent lunchbox. I'm looking into this and I'm curious if it will bring more analog weight in comparison to the plugins I've been using. I'm interested in the offerings from Neve and Chandler. By the way, great series! Thanks for your hard work on this.

Hey Warren, fantastic video as always! I've watched tons of your stuff the last couple of days and it's so, so good. Signed up for the email-list as well, really great stuff there too! I was wondering if you could make a video on how you hook your outboard stuff up going into your pro tools rig? I know it's a lot to ask, but I want to start expanding my stuff with a few 500 series eqs and compressors for a bit of different color on lead vocals etc. going into my computer, but I have no clue how to hook everything up and what stuff I'll need to make that happen! All I have is a basic Focusrite Scarlett 18i20 interface (which I'll expand with the Focusrite Sapphire series via ADAT for 16 channels). Thanks again for these great videos, your work sounds amazing!

So, today I watched part II and it was interesting to see how that , in my opinion, over produced sound is obtained, so thanks for that.
But I was wondering, I see you used a lot of processing and here's my question: do you listen to the all the tracks simoultanesly and then go about eq, comp etc. etc. or do you solo stuff to get the sound you need and then listen back to everything and adjust?
I am thinking that after all these years of mixing it's a bit of both, but like I said, just wondering.
    Have a great day
    Giuseppe

Hi Giuseppe Formisano Haha 'over produced', I try to always listen to everything together as much as possible, only soloing when I have to check things. Hi Warren great video! I do Hybrid Mixing as well in a similar fashion to the way you describe. I'm curious how you handle recall on the console. I'm not that familiar with SSL. Does it store your eq and compression settings so you can call them up at a later date if you say had to remix the track? PS I just signed up for the Academy and really look forward to being a part of that. Keep up the great work. David

what i dont get is : when you eq everything so much, doesnt it kill the natural dynamics of the song in the end?

    • @Producelikeapro
      @Producelikeapro  9 лет назад +2

Hi +Bebe Na Vole Great question! If I were only recording one instrument and a vocal I would need only a minimal amount of EQ and compression, if at all. As we add more parts we use EQ to shape areas where there is a cross over of frequencies, most often that can be low mids (hence the 350Hz cut in the drums) and then of course the very low lows where the Kick and low end of the bass live, so we cut lows in some other instruments to allow clarity down there. Also finding the fundamental frequency of an instrument and boosting it a little can help it stand out in a mix without the need for just turning it up considerably. I hope that helps? Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
