Kate & Greg When you drain the water line You MUST disconnect Both ends since your line goes over the Mtn You can drain only the water
line on one side of the Mtn if one end is still hooked up to anything
Remember that the batteries do not perform well in the cold so your performance may be zip. Electric devices that run on 120 / 140 Volts don't like a supply less than about 105 volts and 12 volt devices don't do well with less than 10.5 volts

Guys, regarding your frozen water line into your cistern from your source; have you thought of installing a tee and a open/close valve every so often so you can determine where your freeze is? I'm suggesting about every 200-250 feet.
(Sorry, I just an 82 year old engineer who still doesn't think in metric)

I would suggest you try digging a well. Rock stores water below the tree line in mountains, so you might not have to dig as deep as you think to find water on your land.

Hey folks, been hesitant to share my thoughts however I think the time is due to put my concerns aside and just share with you. Couldn't find your email otherwise I would have sent a direct message.
I have lived in South Africa, Israel, Portugal and Scotland and all of my destinations had the typical challenges of water supply. Now I know its winter so this idea might only take shape in the late spring. Has anyone mentioned the idea of setting up a ram pump from below and simply letting gravity and force to permanently set up your water supply? I have lived on a steep crop in Scotland and my land in Portugal is on a heavy slope and I never had a single issue with water supply. I just let nature take control and gravity does the rest. obviously you would need to drop trenches below the frost line but you should theoretically be able to set up a perfect ram pump system and just make sure you have large water barrels to catch the flow at the top. There, said my peace. Hope you find this constructive. If you need more info - I can send you links and the usual educational stuff.

Probably easier in the long run to just drill a well close to the homestead and run it off of a couple solar panels and into the cistern. Use a float switch to control the pump. That's what we do around here.

You know the solar panels are going to get snow on them; so why not heat trace the panels? You could have a bank of older batteries located behind the panels that are charged up by the existing panels or additional panels. Put temperature control on the tape. When the temperature drops below the setpoint, the heat will turn on, keeping the snow off.

Digging a shallow hole with a sump pump will provide water but will freeze in the line when not actively pumping...The solution is to drill a small holier the line that feeds the house blower the water level. when the pump is off the water in the line will drain down, leaving the pvc devoid of water and not frozen pipe will result. The line from spring to house needs, however to be pitched downward to the spring .

I always like to think of technology from 1850. If you have an active spring, you have a great site for a well. Even a classic hand dug shallow well or hand drilled well. Create a water tower over it that has solar panels direct connected to a well pump so it pumps when the sun shines. A float switch can control it.

    • @stephenporter7555
      @stephenporter7555 9 месяцев назад

I have to agree I put my dug well right on top of a spring. It is 3'x12' and always has at least 8' of water. You can then put your pump inside a slightly larger pvc pipe making sure you keep everything off the bottom. Most systems done this way they put a 1/8 hole in the black pipe just above well pump. It will drain back slowly when not in use and not freeze. What would be interesting is how far that pump is able to pump

Since you have totes… you should have a root cellar with a big door to backup to and drop off 1-2 or 3 full totes … as long as the root cellar stays above freezing it’ll work as a water storage during harsh weather❄️🌨️💨

Dear Katie and Greg. You've mentioned you're having trouble making your most resent Tractor's grader attachment work. Here's something you might consider. The pull blade Grader Moldboard appears to be cut out of a motor grader from a moldboard. Not a bad Idea, but they didn't finish the job. Where the cutting edge meets the ground, it's too thick.
Try taking your blade attachment off the rear of your tractor and turn it completely over. With a cutting torch, bevel the edge (FROM THE BACK TO THE FORWARD CUTTING PART OF THE EDGE) to 1/2" to 5/8" with the leading part of the cutting edge making ground contact - just like a knife.
When the road is dry, start grading from the higher point on you road against the bank with your blade angled forward and into the bank. Before you start grading, TILT your Blade down to create a inside ditch. Grade down hill uses less HP and that means less fuel usage.
Lets say the high side is on your left when you're headed down hill. Your blade should be
angled forward to the left side and tilted down to create a modest ditch 6"-10" deep. You'll be leaving a berm of dirt and rocks in the center of the road. You most likely not cut out the ruts in you first two passes, so don't be discouraged. On your second, back up the hill where you started, you'll want to angle you blade to the right so you can separate the rock from the dirt. Then repeat the same process without increasing the depth of your inside ditch.
after several time cutting away at your ruts and you'll have a road that's easy to maintain because you've eliminated the rock that bother your grading in the winter snows.
About every 250-300 feet you might consider cutting in a water bar to prevent washouts.

Take as many IBC's as you can get down there and bulk store as much as you can. Not sure the totes will freeze through but at least get some more storage capacity down there. All that snow melt from your roof and deck area is being completely wasted, you really need to find a solution, what you're doing is a band aid until the next crisis. Pipe all your runoff especially rain, into storage, cisterns are cheap get three of four into the ground you have the room. Alternately use IBC's as a cost saving, build a low cost insulated shelter to store six or eight totes in. Living off grid doesnt need to be like that at all. you need, water, power, food and heat as basic survival, you have been there, is it four years now and still haven't mastered survival 101, water. Think it through there are so many options. Im sorry to be so sharp, but it is what it is. If you have 6 totes down at your water point you can connect all to a simple ram pump and force it up slopes, just keep an overflow capability at the top to keep a constant flow and avoid pipes from freezing. If you use one tote in two weeks, give or take, eight totes will last four months, thats the worst of winter done and dusted, think big not small.

Haha, Juniper and his ball. Always ready to play, year round - an all weather dog for sure 🙂 The flow rate is 14GPM for 1/2" pvc and 23GPM for 3/4" pvc so you should notice a big difference. I know you can't really say anything about them prohibiting the plowing but it makes no sense to me; I 'd love to know the backstory on that but it probably still wouldn't make sense. Was it a neighbor complaint behind it? I hope you got the line cleared out of the ice and all is working again. Have a great time in Mexico. Be safe and have fun. Larry, Central Valley, Ca.

other then buying water from a municipality a lot of farmers do that for mixing fertilizer here it costs a whapping $.25 cents for 300 gALLONS AND IT FILLS VERY QUICKLY directly from a water tower takes maybe 2 minutes to fill an IBC tote 275 gallons. You cant hardly beat that price a lot of people haul water to their lake cabins rather then drill a well or put in cistern. you just need IBC totes and a good hefty say two axle trailer.

You got electricity. So if you pull a heater wire (waterproof) into the water pipe, you can melt it. Can be automatized, by measuring temp.😊
Option "B": You got a pressure tank. Apply a spring kind stopper in the water line before the presdure tank and with the compressor blow out the standstill.water back to thy tank by compressed air.
With this the top the most freezy part of your water system can be dry. And woud be there water only in case of need. Allso i mean as an electrically automated soulution. Can be fullfilled right underneath from your house.

If you have a surface water right or can purchase a portion of a nacre foot per year from a water bank you should be able to plumb in from the creek perminantly. You already have most of the parts that you need. You just need to increase the flow rate so that the lines will not freeze during the Winter and or bury the lines and have a basic screen to keep debris out of you lines. There are many Class A and B community water systems that have approximately the same amount of source flow as you do. You need to keep the water moving and pretty fast in areas and are not buried below the frost level and have a return line back to the creek for your overflow..

Hi Kati and Greg. I would like to advise the both of you to use a french drain pipe at the bottom of a small pond to collect water. When you place a french drain in the bottom underneath sand/rocks and let the creek "fill" the Pond, make the outlet of the french drain a little upwards, but underneath the toplevel of the dam of the made pond. And just let the water overflow out over the french drain exit.
This idea might only be possible when you are able to get to the creek with the tractor, or will take some human labor for it 🤔

that is a better idea Greg ,blowing the line out as apposed to letting it drain. We blow out our water lines every year and have had no problems after.

Take some half inch plywood with some 2 inch solid foam sheets cover your IBC. Toe completely top bottoms all 4 sides. And that will keep it from freezing and also cracking the IBC.
And if you make a platform to pull behind your quad out of wood use polyure thing for skids, and you should be able to pull a big load with that quad. Without any problooms, you'll be surprised. How much power it has when you have. A nice solid wooden skid with plastic runners underneath. Best Of luck to you too.

Get a d4 cat with a wagon sled. Put your water tank on it with your hopefully gas powered fire pump. These cats where used in Alaska and the Canada as cat trans. Pulling supplies to remote mines and comities. That way, you don’t need to plow that forest service road anymore.

As someone who grew up without running water on a farm that had t o water cattle too, here's a piece of advice. LESS IS MORE, establish a well and insulate to ensure freeze free operation. I'm assuming it doesn't get to - 40 there. So good luck.

I wonder if there is a way to put a PTO on the four wheeler and mount/attach a pump to it to pump uphill into your IBC? Just a thought. You guys are tenacious, I'll give you that. I swear I just don't understand how y''all, or anybody, can live in that cold and snow. Y'all go South and get warm....you deserve it.

When we lived off grid, we collected rain water of course but we got our drinking water from town. We hauled 3-4 ibc tanks depending on our levels at the time. That being said we were filled by fire hydrant however it didn't help us at home. We purchased a gas powered water pump from our local Menards made by generac. It has attachments to hook up a water hose if desired. It runs about an inch to inch and a half line from both ends as well as a filter to catch debris. We were able to come up with attachments to hook up the pump directly to our tanks to drain them and pump the water from tank to tank. I can tell you it moves some water for such a small pump. It took minutes to transfer tank to tank to unload our trailer. We always had a tank at home so we would fill it, remove a tank fill it and so on. In the end we always had an empty tank even if we had to leave it on the trailer and use what was left first. But it was so convenient and quick to move our water once we got it home. I don't know what you have available in your location but you could literally get water from anywhere.
It is a cw10k 1" 30gpm. We used the hose attachment to reach longer distances and to water our animals as well as filling our campers potable water tank. At one time we used the standard blue hose that comes with the pump however we didn't like the hose taste in the water so we used a drinking water hose for the house. I know you all will figure out what is best for you and I pray it is close and convenient for you.

I want to add I mentioned this prior to seeing your pump. The one I sent you is smaller and more portable in a sense, I was just stating what we did for our water moving solutions. You move water with the totes more or less the same way.

Get one of those three point hitch to skid steer adapters so you can mount your forks on the back of your tractor and lift the water container with the forks on the three point hitch. Put some big rocks in the bucket up front if you have to for ballast.
