And Blake was not really able to compete with Bolt after his injury so for the years before Bolt's retirement Gatlin was the main guy pushing Bolt.

It's not a rivalry when you compete against yourself, being on form vs out of form/injured (Bolt). If Bolt was motivated and on form, the rest are running for 2nd, be that Blake, Gatlin, Powel or Gay. Gatlin is a testament of how people can change in a good way, but he's no rival for Bolt, no one is, only Bolt himself.

2015 world champs Gatlin could have had it but he stumbled 20m from the finish, and 2017 was a cathartic release for finally winning major gold. Bolt is unequivocally the greatest male sprinter ever because he has the world records, the individual golds over 3 olympiads & 3 world champs, & he was a clean athlete unlike Gatlin who was suspended twice for PEDs.
Being dominant in track and field for 8 straight years is not an easy task!
Gatlin always had a great start. But I also like how De Grasse catches on mid-race and seems to be leaving more and more people behind. As for Bolt, well, I've nothing useful to say- BOLT the GOAT from GOD!

Gatlin had a better start when they are in position down on the knees and Bolt then got him almost everytime, because he is a faster runner in general, it is mostly visible in 1:17 on 4x100m when they do not start as classic 100m
Not faster runner. Bolt is longer leg. Gatlin is faster runner but shorter. Short people are always good at the start but when the distance is longer, the long leg won eventually because of foot gap. Imagine you running with a guy who can run same speed but longer leg. You will lose.

Definitely. However, none of the tall sprinters with long stride lengths (like Lemaitre or Ryan Bailey) can match Bolt's leg speed, which is only a little bit slower than a shorter sprinters like Gatlin, Blake and Coleman etc.

Bolt was taller so he didn't get the perfect start but covered long distances from mid to the end of the race. Gatlin was shorter than him so he got perfect start but he was unable to catch up bolt's speed
