I’m a makeup artist. I only use bar soaps to clean my makeup tools. First, i will wet my bar soap and makeup sponge and brushes then swirl them around on top of the bar soap and rinse and repeat few times (depends on how dirty your brushes or sponge are). For sponge, you need to swirl then squeeze gently under water and repeat until it’s clean. If you want to be extra clean, just cut the bar soap into small size like hotel bar soap size, clean everything and throw the used small bar soap after. That way, you’ll have left over of the clean bar soap that don’t get contaminated with bacteria.
You can use anti bacterial bar soap or baby bar soap.
Sorry for my bad english. I hope you guys understand what i’m saying.

Just put hot water and dish soap in a glass and swirl them around for like 15 seconds.
Vinager is an acid and will eat the glue that holds the brushes together. And they shouldn't be submerged in water for 20 minutes either

@@wonderpetz9005 your comment is so idiotic. It doesn't matter how expensive your brushes are, almost all make up brushes are glued to together at the base and this method of steeping the brushes in a harsh solution will strip the glue from the base no matter how expensive the brushes are. The brushes with very cheap glue will come apart right away, slightly stronger glues will come apart once they're dry and you're using them on your face. NEVER EVER steep brushes in a solution be it water or something stronger. Always wash them upright one by one, using a bristle mat helps a lot too, painfully annoying but only way to preserve the longevity of all brushes regardless of how expensive they are.

For who feel I'm hating on her trust me I'm 100% not, but for those who feel I am please take this video into any Sephora, or M.A.C. and see how any of the makeup artist react to the cleaning of the brushes, because trust me you don't let them soak, and you also do your best to not let the water go past the metal ferrule of the brush, because the ferrule has the glue in it that holds your bristles together and also helps connect the handle to the bristles it helps hold the entire brush together you do your best to not allow any water to get in there because it ruins the brushes whether it be natural or synthetic bristles you don't use alcohol or any other harsh substances on them that would dry them out it ruins your brush no matter how expensive or cheap you choose to buy. Trust me if you use this method one too many times especially on like let's say a Tom Ford brush that you will pay out pretty much $100 on for 1 brush you're going to end up quite upset that a very expensive brush is now ruined. And for anyone thinking I'm putting her down this just goes to show that someone who paid for their education and knows how to properly clean a brush and am try to help you, I'm not putting her down, I have not called her any bad names I am merely trying to help anyone who is wanting to learning how to clean their brushes that this is not a good method at all, so sorry if you choose to see this as im being mean im not. I'm trying to help save your brushes so sorry if you see this as bad

Margaret Dale Same here. I’ve been following this thread for several months and have been trying to warn people to please not use this method. Brushes are an investment, even some drugstore brushes can get pricey. My heart has been absolutely broken reading some of the comments here from those who tried this method and ruined their brushes. 💔💔 If I we’re a RUclipsr and I made a video that caused damage to someone’s brush collection, I would be so ashamed and would immediately apologize and try to make things right. Then I would take the offending video down and make an apology video.
On the flip side of the coin, we as subscribers also need to take caution when trying out something we see here. Although you don’t necessarily have to read the entire comments section, reading some of the replies can be helpful. For instance, in this video alone, commenters who have either taken art classes or who otherwise have knowledge about the care of makeup brushes responded immediately warning what would happen. If you do decide to try something you see on RUclips, proceed with caution. Test it out on one or two things that are cheap and easily replaced, rather than going all out and trying it on your whole collection. If it’s a DIY “beauty hack,” exercise even more caution, or better yet, don’t try it if you have any doubts. Your health and safety isn’t worth risking for some too good to be true “beauty hack.”
Watching beauty and makeup videos is fun and can be informative, and I’m sure making them is quite fun, too, but remember, as an influencer, you have a responsibility to your audience. There’s a wealth of information available on the internet, so please be sure and do your research before making a video. What may seem like a simple video on how to clean your brushes could end up getting you into some unintended trouble.

    • @farashahanem
      @farashahanem 6 лет назад +27

Melynda Moon Maybe she’s not a RUclipsr. You don’t have to make videos to be knowledgeable in any subject. RUclips beauty gurus may have a lot of knowledge and experience, but that doesn’t make them all-knowing. They’re people, and people make mistakes like the young lady who made this video (but is unfortunately not taking responsibility for her mistake). Several people here who are makeup artists, artists in general, or who have experience in taking care of makeup tools (who may or may not have their own channels) are trying to HELP here.

*I am a makeup artist myself and I've been cleaning brushes for over 5 years* all you need is a bowl of warm soapy water (prefer dawn dishsoap) or Dove body wash and let them sit in the warm soapy water for 10 mins then GENTLY do swirling motions on the palm of my hands while rinsing it will completely remove all dirt/bacteria/makeup then I grab a towel and gently pat then LET AIR DRY facing DOWN or laying down .. Never dry upward(bristels) will create mold from trapped water. 😇😇🙏

For everyone freaking out about the vinegar, you need to think of the properties of it and Dawn. Dawn dish soap is known for its grease-cutting abilities. They use it on wildlife that has been exposed to crude oil. White vinegar is a distilled acidic substance. It's primary purpose is for cleaning. There are different strengths - common and "for cleaning". The common one is also the one you mix with the colors for Easter eggs. The typical dilution is 50/50 with water. It is also used in good glass cleaner, as it doesn't streak. So, when you combine the vinegar and Dawn, you get a potent cleaner. In this video, she used 1 CUP of water to 1 TABLESPOON of vinegar. That is a 1:16 dilution. If that were apple cider vinegar, you could actually drink it at that ratio. As I said, the typical dilution is 1:1 water to vinegar. At this dilution, even without Dawn, it would be near impossible to ruin the brushes, unless you used the "for cleaning" strength. And it would take sitting virtually overnight fully immersed to do any damage to the glues. If the brushes are cheap, it MIGHT start affecting the glue, but not right away. She also only let them sit for 20 minutes. If there is concern, you can dump the solution and just put straight water in to stop the cleaning proces.
Now, as to what each ingredient does: Dawn - cuts through the grease the the chemical makeup of what's on the brushes. Once that starts getting removed, the acidic quality of the vinegar kicks in and not only helps remove the smaller amounts of makeup, but actually does much of the cleaning of the bristles. The water, obviously dilutes the vinegar but also creates volume for both Dawn and the vinegar.
In other words, STOP FREAKING OUT ABOUT USING VINEGAR. If you think you're going to harm your brushes, use 1 teaspoon vs 1 tablespoon. But it is a very good ingredient as a cleansing agent. If you want to test what I'm saying, take three glasses of water, each with one cup of water. In the first one, put two cups of distilled white vinegar (2:1 ratio). In the second, use one cup of vinegar (1:1 ratio). And in the third, use 1 tablespoon (1:16 ratio). Mix each well (use your finger or a spoon). Put two super cheap water color brushes in each glass - one with nothing on it and the other with dried and caked foundation or concealer. Check after one hour, four hours, 12 hours and then overnight. What's the result? With the 2:1 ratio, you shouldn't have very many bristles left. In the 1:1 ratio, you should see a decent cleaning, and some damage (remember, this is the common glass and countertop cleaning ratio). In the 1:16 ratio, you should only see two clean brushes. And if you want to see the potency of the vinegar on its own, put about 1/4 cup in a glass and then put one of the cheap water color brushes in it. You can almost watch the bristles disintegrate.

It was my first makeup brush set and I was ready to wash this, when I was just about to try this I looked at the comments and luckily I did, because my brushes would have been ruined!!! Comments save brushes lives lmao. I eventually just mixed a small amount of oil and dish soap and mixed just the bristles through it, the. I tilted the brushes downwards under cold water (so the glue didn’t disappear) and gently washed the mixture out of the bristles. I then got a towel (one side folded to lean them against) I faced the bristles downwards so the water wouldn’t run up the brush to the glue and let them dry over night. They were as good as new! They felt soft and were all white like they were originally!

Alright so she said to put your “Brush Routine” so here I go
    1) Get your nasty brushes a rinse
    2) Fill a solo cup with 1/4 water depending on the cup size
    3) Put Facial toner and face wash/foam in the cup
    4) One brush at a time spin those puppies around for 30 seconds
    5) Rinse the soap off
    6) Dry on a paper towel
    7) Bam you are done

The quality of the brushes depends on if they fall out. But if you're going to still use her method don't have the water go past up the barrel of the brush. Typically just below. Or get a sponge put some dish soap on it and rub your bristles on the sponge and then rinse it clean holding the bristles downward, blot it dry and let it out to sit on an angle on a towel or paper towels.. so the water will run out of the barrel if there's any in it. Good luck... The second way is how I clean cheaper brushes

Thank goodness for comment sections. I’m new to using makeup brushes and almost tried to kill my only set. From what I learned:
    1) don’t use vinegar it’ll eat the glue, I just used a little dish soap
    2) don’t soak them in hot water, especially not for 20 minutes the glue will melt. I swirled each brush gently in a glass with warm water and a squirt of dish soap, then put it under the faucet and gently swirled on my palm, squished it a little to get out excess water and put it on a towel. The brushes came out very clean for me, they looked new (and they are bright white).
    3) do not under any circumstances dry them bristle side up, this will trap the water and the brush will get moldy. It’s best to dry them facing downward, though laying flat will do. I angled mine against a little fan and on top of a wash cloth to dry and they dried well.
Please note: I was cleaning my eye makeup brushes and they are quite small. I’m not 100% how the drying method I used would work on larger makeup brushes. I believe that it’ll work but I’m not completely certain since I’ve never tested it.
    I hope this helps.

    WARNING!
In earlier comments people warn you not to try this method because they got their brushes ruined. I haven't tried this so I can't say for sure if it's true, but I think I don't want to test it and push my luck. Brushes cost so much that ruining them would be tragic. The soap bar or the brush egg method seems much safer!

I always look at the comments but this time I was in a rush to clean up and decided to trust it. Even though I thought using vinegar and dish soap to clean face brushes sounded weird. Thankfully nothing happened to my brushes, but I’m confused on why the creator still has this video up. Ironically it’s the first one that poos up after you search.

Though this seems like a great method, consider your liquid to container size ratio. The liquid should NOT touch the ferrule of your brush at all, if possible, especially for an extended period of time. Inside is where the glue sits and holds thousands of bristles to form the makeup brush that you LOVE. Soaking this part will cause the glue to soften and breakdown. If your brush never or rarely has fallout, and you start to see it more often after washing your brushes like this- you've broken down some of the glue. Gently comb out any loose bristles then see if it's still useable, if it's not, then time for a replacement.
Use a smaller container and only put a LITTLE liquid. Do your large and smaller brushes SEPARATELY. It'll be easier to gauge how much liquid you need to add or pour out so it's ONLY touching the bristles. I hope this helps! This is a great cleaning method IF DONE CORRECTLY....otherwise it'll ruin your brushes

Geeze I read all the comments and good grief ... so much negativity. Listen, I "followed" the instructions (come on people!) and my brushes are beautifully clean. No need to even leave them in the solution for 20 minutes. Less than 5 minutes and they are beautiful. As they are drying I can see them fluffing up. Try it! It Works! No one should be letting their brushes sit in Any kind of solution for an hour. They should not be getting that dirty. Hygiene matters in all things. Thank you for the vid Kayleigh! Didn’t ruin my brushes but I also didn’t soak them for more than 5 minutes and I used way less solution and a dribble of vinegar. I used more dish detergent than vinegar so maybe that’s why I got lucky. Usually I use baby wash but ran out.

I TOOK YOUR ADVICE! So far, IT WORKS!!! I didn't have to scrub them aggressively or anything. It just cleans itself, almost immediately, but leaving it definitely did the job. I thought the vinegar would make it stink, but it really doesn't. I had used different products but basically did the same thing: vinegar, detergent, and baby shampoo to soften the brushes. Now we just wait until they dry. ♥

Soaking for 20 mins will make them seep in water upto the glue just like a wick does. This will make them fall apart. Then tugging with comb is even worse. Just take a silicone pot holder from dollar tree and a baby shampoo plus conditioner and it should do the trick. Of course it won't work if you used the brush a trillion times and are washing it once a year but if you do it regularly weekly or biweekly, this should help. This method in the video gave me panic attack four times.

In art class we were taught to clean paint brushes used for oil painting with olive oil and dish soap, breaks down any stubborn residue and conditions the bristles at the same time to make them last longer, don’t use hot water or it will dislodge the glue over time causing shedding or for the brush head to fall off completely (learned this the hard way RIP Chanel kabuki brush)
But I’ve done this for years and my brushes are still like new
I also dry them facing down on a clean towel, by rolling one end of the towel to create a slope for them to rest up against so the water drained properly, never put them back upright while they’re still wet/damp

Stop hating on Kayleigh it’s not her fault. It has nothing to do with her it’s the quality of your brushes and also, don’t put the brushes any lower than the handle or the glue will melt and the bristles will come out, if you had a better quality brush or you didn’t put it any lower than the handle it would work. Stop hating on Kayleigh because it’s not her fault y’all are doing it wrong. If you don’t like the video leave she’s just trying to be helpful and sharing a very helpful tip/hack.

Recommend using some dove body wash or a bar of dove soap and if you use dove body wash rinse your brush put like a dot or too rub it on your hand rinse and keep doing that till it doesn’t look dirty and give it a good rinse if you use dove soap bar wet the brush rub it on the dove soap bar and rinse and reaper till they are clean and put them on a towel to dry

I typically wash my makeup brushes out once a week, and before I use one for a different colour of makeup. For example if I've used an eyeshadow brush to apply blue eyeshadow and then I want to use it to apply a pink one, I will wash it first, obviously so I won't end up with traces otherwise left over.
I wear rubber cleaning gloves while doing it, since the ridges of a glove helps get the brush clean more easily until the colour is all out.
I wet the bristles of my brush with cold water (not hot, since this can damage the brush by either melting the glue and/or damaging the bristles) and I use some baby shampoo to clean them. (I use a shop's own brand, like a supermarket or health store own brand, because I've found that cheaper shampoos are as good as the expensive ones in many cases, so I see no point in spending more money on something which is going to go down the drain anyway.) I've also used hand wash, which I find works well too.
I run the glove and the brush bristles under water, then apply a bit of shampoo to the glove, and swish the bristles back and forth , then rinse them until they're clear. Sometimes I may need to do it more than once e.g. with a powder brush or a blusher brush. After that, I then squeeze out the excess water and leave them on an old towel on a flat surface to dry. I also line them up so they take up less room alternatively so that the bristles of different brushes are away from each other, since this also helps them dry more quickly.

    • @theserenemystic

I think it would work better if the water didn't go all the way up to the ferrule. There is adhesive in the ferrule that helps the bristles stay in place and when they are all the way submerged, the adhesive loosens. 😢

    • @farashahanem
      @farashahanem 6 лет назад

Kohrie Black I wouldn’t soak them at all. Not worth the risk of having the hairs soak up the water, even if the water line is below the ferrule.

gonna try your soap concoction but without the hot hot water. steaming hot water has destroyed the glue in my brushes so I've learned that lesson! also I prefer to dry them with the bristles facing down :)

So, your mixture gets the brushes really clean, but letting them soak in it like that can weaken the glue holding the bristles, making the brushes not last as long. Also if you dry the brushes at a slant, with the handle ends on a rolled up towel, the water will not stay in the ferrule as long

You can use vinegar, just don't put the brushes too deep so that the solution touches the glue part and you'll be fine, unless brushes can soak water like cloth, meaning liquid reaching the parts that are not even dipped, then please do avoid vingar.

  • @yasminenoor1998
