Not Cricket ! - Match Fixing (Orig 2001) Pt1

  • Ten years after this was broadcast, three Pakistani Test cricketers were in English prisons for taking bribes in a betting scam at the Lords Test match. Also in jail for match fixing was Essex fast bowler Mervyn Westfield. Cricket has a fundamental credibility problem; can you really believe in what you are seeing?
This documentary (panorama) was screened BEFORE Hansie Cronje's unfortunate plane crash and death. At the time, far more was expected to come out, as Ian Botham says. The beeb later made a documentary called Not Cricket 2, but in that later programme, stories had been changed, and Cronje was made out to be a lone fixer. As this original shows, the corruption went far deeper. What was Dave Richardson doing EVEN CONSIDERING a bribe? - although he must be commended for his honesty -- he told the truth! Why did Marlon Aronstam later change his evidence? (In this programme Aronstam clearly states he paid Cronje $53,000. In the later whitewash Not Cricket 2, Aronstam denies paying Cronje at all.) Who got at him? What more did Bob Woolmer know? It's clear that match fixing goes far beyond just Pakistan or Hansie Cronje.
Many thanks to the beeb. They certainly then had the expertise and the balls to make programmes like this.

The only stuff I found on the King Commission is in "Cricket Match Fixing - Dead men tell no tales", also on this channel. I think there is some other stuff online, but remember the King Commission was strictly 'limited hangout' - I don't believe they really wanted to expose anything new. "Blame it all on Hansie and move on." As we now know, match/spot fixing is widespread all over sport.

There were NEVER any tapes, never anything like a formal presentation of that evidence. Hansie should have denied everything and forced them to produce the tapes. Call their bluff. It was his honesty and guilt that lead him to confess and take his lumps-and the lumps for everyone who ever gave in to bookies.

I have been reading your thoughtful comments about match fixing and Cronje. Seeing that you actually knew Hansie, I would be interested in what you believe really happened to him. (I mean about him being scapegoated and then bumped off.)

Clear tapes are there otherwise why he would admit even in his own countries investigation... Don't support corrupt... He didn't accept for no reason... He was Red handedly caught which is shown in this video clearly, and much more information.. He has no choice... If we cannot see them it doesn't mean the investigative agencies are incorrect... They are way above our imagination...
I admit he has huge talent but cheating the nation is a very disgrace...
I am from India, after seeing Tehelka's videos, It is clear that Aharuddin, Jadeja, Mongya and Prabhakar fixed the matches, cheated the country... Shame in them...

South Africa was one of the earliest teams involved in match fixing....you can get clear evidence if you watch the video named Fallen heroes containing 6 parts....

match fixing started right away from 1980's and 1990's .....if you want more info watch the video named Fallen Heroes which contains 6 parts released by tehelka.com in the early 2000's....it was actually a sting operation conducted by Tehelka.com.....probably England and Australia were the cleanest cricket teams back then and every other team was involved in match fixing....and even West Indies was involved in match fixing....better watch the video mentioned by me.....it will shock cricket fans for sure....

"England and Australia" statement was given by Rakesh Maria and he was incorrect. Currently, the fixing has moved from match fixing to session fixing and many English and Australian players are involved. Watch cuple of Al Jazeera's documentaries on the same.

Fixing is happening since 1970s. Since there was no law against fixing 80 percent were involved. Usually the successful ones. Some got caught some didnot. Not that they were not good human beings. Now england India and australian players are paid so much money that least fixing incident are in these countries now. Not that they are saints.Thats the only way. An international sportman is not in an army that he is fighting for his country. He is demonstrating his sports skill to make his country proud. And the public ...media and management pressure is so much , and also thefact he has to remain away from his wife and children for the major part of the year, naturally unless they are saints they are bound to stray unless paid in crores. Eg : if a company is not paying a handsome salary to its purchase head and putting a lot of work pressure on him...he may stray and take bribes from the vendors. A purchase head from a high paying multinational is less likely to take bribes.

Simple answer is for anyone to be banned for life if they cheat, tamper with the ball or get involved with match fixing or illegal betting scandals and that goes for all sports not just cricket as it’s the only way to stop it.
If the penalty is not hard enough then players will always try to get away with it....
Steve Smith and David Warner and most of the Pakistani side from 2010 are examples of players that should have been banned for life

+MH20 BS3177 The Bookies contact cricketer and asks to underperform for money. Now the bookies will bet on the opponent team's win & make more money.
For Example, A Bookie will contact Team X and purchase all the players for $1Millions and asks them to underperform. Now He will bet $2 Million on the opponent team's win. On winning, he will earn for times the amount he has invested for betting.
A Bookie will earn now, $2Mx4= $8 Million - 1 Million [He Paid to Employees] - 2 Million [Investment in Betting] = $5 Million.

Betting on the outcome of the game is just one aspect of match-fixing. Almost everything- right from pitch and weather conditions to the outcome of every single delivery- is bet upon.
