  • It's all kinds of chateaux love this week, as we visit some local sites including Puyguilhem & two Plus Beaux Villages, and bring in the new year with our friends Vivienne & Simon from the ‪@ChateauLove‬ YT channel.

Manor & Maker theme music by Jamie Christopherson and Jeff MacDonald for Louder Productions.
Sara, an IT professional & Stephen a graphic designer and artist are world-traveling Canadians who dreamt of moving to Europe, and France in particular. In 2020 they were working from home when Stephen turned to Sara and popped the question she was longing to hear, “What would have to be true for us to buy a chateau in France?” They searched online for months viewing hundreds of properties. They narrowed their search and toured some properties when they happened upon the one that captured our hearts, Chateau de Saint-Germain-des-Pres. A year later they made the move to France to start their new adventure in our beautiful Chateau. They created “Manor and Maker” to reflect the two sides of their adventure. One, to live as chateau owners with all the ups and downs and two, to pursue their passions as makers, creating art in all its forms. They will invite others to come together, united by their passions, to share in this adventure. We invite you to join us too, as we bring our dreams to life. Welcome to Manor & Maker.

As someone who was a very picky eating kid, but decided in late teenager/young adulthood that I didn’t want to be anymore, and has slowly been trying all kinds of things just as I encounter them, it feels SOOOO good to think of yourself as a more adventurous eater. It doesn’t even matter if you end up not liking most of what you try, it’s the feeling of being interested and not scared of food that is the change? Something to feel proud of?
I am so (secondhand) proud you tried the caviars, and on camera! I have never tried caviar, and I only just tried my first fresh oysters on the half shell in 2019, in Borough Market in London, when I was there alone celebrating my 30th. It helped that guy working the stall there was an incredibly handsome bearded Englishman who recommended his favorite one for me to try and taught me how to eat it!

I still have tree envy, your tree was so extraordinary I would have left it up most of the year. My fake tree lost more needles that yours!. Love the fireplace, the visits to the chateaus. You will not believe how stunning Venice will be . Just entrancing.

Sara you were very brave to try your taste buds, not me! It was lovely to see the masonry stone carvings, the ceiling was amazing, love the sections very mysterious as well as the wooden door, think about the blacksmith forging those nails and the skills of the buildings to make it safe from invaders, that was what it was all about, security, it is pure magic. The Chateau being kept since the 1200's is amazing, goes to show if you take care of your possessions, how long it can last! Any Country that preserves it's Historical buildings we have to respect, same in Hungry. It was not too great a hassle to remove the tree, it had served it purpose and can still supply firewood or wood chips. I was thinking you should have placed a box underneath each cutting piece and chains awed it into manageable sections! It was lovely sharing the Festive festivities with you and your friends, next up is Valentine's Day!! Who knows what will happen, we hope and trust only the best for 2022. All the very best, best wishes and kind regards 😇

A great start to 2022 with Vivienne and Simon.. Happy New Year! Thank you for the tour!
France certainly is picturesque and chateaux were definitely built to last.. were you had the best vantage point to survey your realm! With so many still standing as reference, makes you wonder at the wealth of the owners in the day. The Venice trip, sounds the dream!
Sad to see the Christmas tree go... lights are always a dilemma. Some years ago, after making an over sized faux tree decision, we found a wholesaler the following year and had one made.
Tall but narrowed at the base it was perfect, the owner also gave us the best lighting advice.
Start at the top - imagine the tree divided into sections, one for each set (we had 6 sets) then zig zag each length down the tree in each section... so wider as you go down. All plugs are then at the base, ready for a power board. No winding round and round, only to find the spacing is wrong and you have to start over! Hope that makes sense ❤🦘.

🥂Bonne Annee 2022 🍾! Festive gatherings with finery, excellent food, & warm fellowship. Yay🎉! 🤩Admire your culinary bravery, Sarah! 🐔Far less of risk taker, esp. with textures & flavor. 😉Go forth & be brave for those of us who shy away from 🆕 tastes.
🤗Thx for sharing your lovely guests & local adventures. Quite enjoyable to listen to discussion on historical background of the spectacular carving on your mantle. 🌟So, thrilling it has so beautifully survived the centuries. 😘Bravo to all the faithful stewards entrusted to care for these magnificent things in their lifetime.
The ancient art & architecture preserved in the UK & Europe is mind-blowing🤯. Am thrilled to 👁️👁️peek over your shoulders to share in tours of such glorious castles🏰 & also gorgeous 🌱scenic🌿 locations. God bless the owners who allow historians & afficiandos inside their homes for a glimpse of this grandeur.
    🤞Fingers crossed on Venice/Verona.
🙏 Hope you'll share making some of your 🎠carnival costumes & masks for your holiday too.

Fun to see you try out the caviar. If you enjoyed it enough to do it again, find a tiny shell spoon (should be easy in France) and ditch those metal (and silver) spoons which can change the taste of the caviar for the worse.

She made the most amazing coats, dresses, ball gowns for clients and all my clothes on these two machines until I was 18 yrs. They are amazing! Good luck using yours when you get your new drive belt.

Academia on the same side of canal as Nancy Guggenheim museum which is excellent, if you like that kind of art. The Academia is full of huge Titian paintings it's wow, big! I also stumbled into a Violin maker history museum which was amazing and wonderful, I play the Violin so it had special meanings to me. Vivaldi is also played in special concerts in the evenings. And in St Mark's square, weather permitting there are restaurants with orchestra, often 2 or 3 all playing. You can go restaurant hoping to listen to them. Yes, glass, crazy wonderful glass. Of course the Domo and the bridge of sighs, the tower, and the gelato! Venice on the canal, take across the canal taxi, the water bus, and naturally a gondola ride. Awesome!

January 5 is the 12th day of Christmas, so you are a few days premature, and the tree still looks good. Maybe next year you can enjoy it a few more days. P.S. Goats love Christmas trees, so you can donate it to the local goat farm. The goats will love it, and the tree won't go to waste. The Singer looks amazing! That gold decoration on old Singer machines was the brainchild of Mr. Clark, who was Isaac Singer's partner in the Singer Sewing Machine Co. Mr. Clark is buried in our local cemetery, here in Hudson, NY.

Happy New Year guys from Australia. I can’t wait to see your future vlogs as they are always so interesting and informative. I learned so much on your vlog re your Singer. I have 2 that need restoration, one is from 1901 and the other is from 1943 and the receipt was in one of the drawers. I love that you are friends with Vivienne and Simon and want to add what a true lady Vivienne is. When she was explaining the caviar differences to you she was so respectful and humble about her knowledge. Her advice regarding Venice was explained with the same kindness and was interesting. I have been to Venice twice but never looked at it through Vivienne’s eyes. I am glad you will both be vlogging so I can experience more. You guys are going to have a wonderful time there and I can’t wait for the vlog. Take your wellies as if it’s under a bit of water it will be easier and not as cold on your feet. If and when you go to Venice may I suggest visiting at l east a lace shop? I was there in 2013 and picked up some lovely pieces that were handmade by young women who go to a special school (the only school, at least at that time), to learn these wonderful skills. I hope the school is still there, as the shop keeper said it’s a slowly dying art. Very few girls decide to learn this beautiful art. It’s such a shame to lose this, I feel.

So glad to hear an update on the mystery of the mantle! It has been bugging me in the background. Its a bit validating that my initial instinct about it being later than the Hundred Years War was correct. Fascinating to think that it is Charles V. I don't immediately think of France when I think of the Holy Roman Empire so that probably threw me off a bit. I love how Sara decided to keep trying the blini with caviar even though you can tell she isn't fond of it.

Go to the Fortuny Gallery if you can when in Venice as the costumes are beautiful, they also have on the top floor his collection of Japanese Samurai warriors costumes which are so detailed and interesting. But the best is just walking round and looking at the buildings and colours. Enjoy

Thank you for an interesting and fun tour and New Year celebrations. I do the 12 days of Christmas, so l'll have more time to slowly leave the season behind. I go through and experience the family ornaments one last time. 🤣 i wanted to hear more of the family discussions while you were walking around locally, such as their first impressions. They seem like a lovely family and I hope to see more of them. I have toured Venice and the glass, lace and fine arts are everywhere such as at St. Mark square and in the churches. Enjoy the Carnival and Island hopping! As young women on a budget we couldn't enjoy any night life and in those days it was creepy, in a fun way, with little lighting in the streets and so easy to see how it looked centuries ago. 😁❤🌺🌹🥂
