Nick was supposed to be a one-off character but the audience responded to Scott Valentine so well that they kept him. He had great chemistry with Justine and the opposing dynamic with the family made for a lot of funny material.
Michael Gross said he probably would have left the show at the end of that season if they hadn't introduced Nick. He was getting bored with his character, but Nick brought out Steven Keaton's dark side!
Nick is a good guy. He has a lot of potential and proved to be great with kids. Part of the reason why he's kind of weird is because he didn't have an easy time growing up. When he was 9, his father walked out on him. Nick found out that his parents never loved each and only got married because they were pregnant with him, though they tried to make the marriage work.
Nick was a hilarious character and this was a great episode. He actually ended up being a nice boyfriend for Mallory in many ways. He was faithful to her and treated her well and even convinced her to go to college in one episode when Mallory had told her parents she had decided against it.
All I remember when I watched this on TV was Nick saying “Aaa” and hoping to be a garbage man one day. RUclips never disappoints when it comes to TV memories of my childhood lol
I remember in a later episode, Steven admitted that his younger self would've been more likely to befriend Nick than Alex. (In a way, it was a shoutout to Back to the Future where Marty befriended his father's younger self).

As they talk about garbage and Elyse says “I’m not sure i understand” then Mallory goes “mom, nick’s an artist” Elyse should’ve said “oh sorry, i missed the connection”
Too bad the spinoff was such a disappointment "The Art of Being Nick" I remember watching an episode and just didn't have the special touch that made him so funny in Family Ties.
good thing about this show is the parents were not real hippies and leaned more towards family values.. Malery seemed to be the one that was more of a modernist.

I think it’s a combination of Rocky and Stanley Kowalski (the way Nick screams “Mallory” is so much like Stanley’s “Stella!” from A Streetcar Named Desire).
Nick got his own spin off. Didn't go anywhere. Too bad, I think it could have been a good show if it would have been polished a little better...It had heart.

The Nick era was FT at its peak. He’s one of those characters that I’ve always remembered.

We's doing fine Nick.
🤣
Fast forward 20 years: Nick is a world renowned artist worth millions of dollars. That's how it always happens.

this cracks me up so hard especially when the whole family goes eeey
Nick had a spectacular head of hair.
They all did but Jennifer's conquered cities
Scott still does! 😂
Still remember watching this on TV in the 80s :)
You can still watch it twice a day on Antenna TV!
@@youllis What time? I'll have to check it out!

I was 24 when this show first aired.
Best addition to the show
Nick, was my fave!
Mallory was my first TV crush ok still
“Hey”😎
What the fuck, I need to watch this now, *THE* Michael J Fox is in this, I am so sad I never knew about this.
It's a wonderful show my favourite is Mallory my biggest TV crush growing up 💜
Nick's one of my favorite TV characters of all time. I didn't think that Bick& Mal would stay together at first but I'm glad they did.
My first crush was on Mallory so I like Nick a lot now but as a kid I was envious of him
My old time favorite show
“I don’t know about you,but I’m keeping about this…it just closed!” 🤣😂
Date a girl who is as excited to introduce you to her family as she was 😊

Nick's presense made the whole pack look like college undergraduates.
Nick became snow queen... we're all proud of him

Justine was such a smoke show
I never stopped having a crush on her since I was like 6
Honestly Nick seems like the kind of guy a couple of hippies would love.
Eh!! 😆 🤣 😂 😹 ...I don't wanna pee myself!!...omg!!
0:04 is the Revolution tonight?
He reminds me of Giovanni Ribisi's character as Phoebe's brother on Friends
There's a hilarious scene later on when the Keaton's meet Nick's Dad. Can you post it?

Rocky
He looks like Rambo but articulates like Rocky🤣
Dressed and looked like Rambo. Talked like Rocky. Lol. Perfect 80s character.
I remember the show and nick.
What sort of bike did Nick ride? Did they ever show the bike?
I think they just played audio, probably a Harley. Remember Steven worked at PBS but this was just CBS or NBC
Didn’t they say a Kawasaki 750 turbo?
I had a HUGE crush on (Mallory) Justine Bateman! She looks amazing here
Same I guess I still do probably my first TV crush and yeah... 💜
Fun fact: she never wore underwear on this show
Lol !
I wonder how Bert Gummer from _Tremors_ would handle Nick?
AY!
Ayhh! 💪🏾

I thought the network didn’t pick up the spin-off because they wanted to keep the Nick character on Family Ties.
I ain't no Charles Bronson
And that's okay
MALLORY!
So funny!
Idk how I got here 🤷
Magic Defwu probably
which season isThis
Season five :)
Mallory dated one of the lost boys?
You just stand your ground garbage sculpture man they’ll come to respect you
Modern Fonzie
the original Joey from Friends... or maybe this is all borrowed from Sly Stallone
I never saw Friends much I do remember Joey but never considered Nick could be an inspiration for him, he is like a Rambo of Art, like Banksy
😆

terrible audio

That was perfectly said 2 years ago and bears repeating in 2024 I'll make a video
Nick didn’t mesh with the show
Justine aged so bad, she now looks like an 80 year old lady.
