The Hustle was a HUGE dance craze! People would take classes, and it brought people out into discos. Part of it's appeal was it brought back dancing with a partner, and then all kinds of different versions came out, it ignited the Disco era!! Also, in the 70's instrumentals could be Giant hits, like when you heard Chuck Mangione's "Feels So Good"!
“Feels So Good” is my ultimate summer song. I hear it and I am brought back to hanging out in my front yard and hearing that song blaring out of my brother’s bedroom window.
Yes! They should react to Chuck!
Feels so good was amazing!!! I was lucky enough to see Chuck Mangione in concert when I was in high school. Such and amazing show!
We did it as a line (or whatever shape) unison group dance.
Indeed. People were dancing together. That doesn't really happen these days.
This song was the dance groove of the summer of 1975, played on hit radio ALL the time, and went to Billboard #1. At last, the master producer and arranger Van McCoy had a hit all his own, after years working behind the production board for so many other artists. But life can be unfair -- McCoy died of a massive heart attack four years later, not even reaching age 40. RIP Van McCoy, thank you for the coolest disco groove.
Right around the time of “Convoy.” Odd time for pop hits.
Yes it was relatively early in the main stream DISCO era.
Cultural domination was still a couple of years away.
I remember the summer of 75 as a kid doing the hustle with my huge Afro!!
He was a genius. Just imagine, the music he would have made today, if still alive?. RIP brother.
Folks .... Can assure you, Van McCoy was Disco way before Saturday Night Fever. Classic track, production and arrangement. This one plus .... The Magical, the one and only ..... Isaac Hayes "The Theme from Shaft" ..... Just superb, as are all your reviews ! Thank you both .... ❤
Ooh yeah. Issac Hayes, theme from Shaft.
The Hustle was 1975. Shaft was 71’! SF was late 77’ early 78’
@@moodaymoom2271 YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!
This song was everywhere. I don't think it's possible for anyone not around then to really get how big of a hit this was.
100% right.
The group Silver Convention also had two #1 (mostly) instrumental hits during the disco era. They were "Fly, Robin Fly" and "Get Up and Boogie". I think you two would like both of them.
The first 45's I bought were fly robin fly and freak out.! I still have them too.
Yep...strange fact is that both the Silver Convention songs each had only six actual words....
"Get up and boogie" plus "that's right"
Then...
"Fly Robin (fly)"
"Up (up) to the sky"
Great pop quiz question
I'd also include "A Fifth of Beethoven", and my favorite, "Beyond the Clouds" by Quartz.
@@One-n-only..BrooklynRed I still have my copy of Le Freak too!
Was thinking the same thing , I know they would love Silver Convention!
The Hustle wasn't just a song. It was a dance - a dance craze. By the way, this song was a part of the disco medley by Selena that you reacted to previously. By the way, one big disco hit by an artist you haven't reacted to yet is "Knock On Wood" by Amii Stewart (which is, by the way, a cover of Eddie Floyd's 1966 hit).
THAT one sums up dance floor time for me!
Yes - absolutely! "Knock on Wood" was huge in Australia when I was a kid and we loved it! Her vocals are amazing and the music is electric! ❣
OMG... I had the 45! Great tune!
You can't use "By the way" more than once in a single post.
The Classic Disco tune. The wind instruments on this song are incredible. As Jay said, strong bass line, great rhythm guitar, those drums and Yes - those are the lyrics. Simple and to the point. Memories of high school dances floating in my mind. 🎶🎶🎶🕺
Phil Bodner's piccolo riff got annoying hearing it just about every hour on the radio in the summer of '75. Steve Gadd's percussion is spot on as usual though, and that trumpet solo is killer. I wish I knew who played it.
This song was probably playing in every skating rink in America at this point ❤️❤️❤️
Yes it was…..skating backwards
Yes, yes it was.
Uk discos also brilliant times !
This kids don’t even know what a skating rink is these days .
My God….skating rinks were HUGE in the disco era. My sister and I went to one near our house EVERY Saturday afternoon for months in late 1977 and most of 1978. Took lessons, got brand new skates, everything. Most of the music we skated to was the disco-heavy Top 40 stuff. They were almost like discos for those of us under 18. Very clean fun.
Yep guys this is pretty much an iconic dance instrumental. Another REALLY cool 70s instrumental is Loves Theme by Barry White and the Love Unlimited Orchestra that he conducted, but he does not sing on that one, just sounds like a magic fusion of funk and classical music played behind a 70s rhythm that you just have to hear! Highly recommend it for the react list. ❤
Loves theme is a magical instrumental, beautiful piece of music, fyi there is a love unlimited version ( barry’s backing vocalists) that has lyrics to loves theme
I came to the comments to see if anyone else would recommend Love’s Theme. Such a great classical funky song. I retire from teaching at the end of this year. This just may be the song that I need to listen to every day to get me to the end.
And I forget who played, A Fifth of Beethoven, and turned Beethoven’s Fifth symphony into a disco instrumental song.
@@walterrutherford8321 it was Walter Murphy
Now you have to do Walter Murphy's "A Fifth of Beethoven." It was a skating rink staple, too.
Oh yes! I remember at the time being almost offended that they would mess with Beethoven. Then I heard it and loved it. They did a great job merging classical with disco. That couldn't be done with any classical composer. It's actually a good introduction to Beethoven's 5th Symphony which is so dynamic.
Love to Love you Baby by Donna Summer was released around this time and was also considered a song that brought disco to the forefront
Loved this one kids ! I was crying cuz it took me back to a beautiful time 😂😳😍
Well spoken! I feel the same way!
OMG my friends and I would practice doing the Hustle together in my room to this 45 (single) for hours!!!
Same here! Did you also spread talc on floor so you can spin and dance easier??
@@Todd170 I had carpet in my room so couldn’t do that- but we looked like the line dance scene in Saturday Night Fever and played this song over & over to get in sync
We did the Hustle and the Monorail back then
Yes! We would practice at my grandma’s house! Sh had hardwood floors at the time….
Same with me. We also practiced one we called the New York Shuffle.
This song was Van McCoy's one and only r&b crossover hit as a solo artist. In the 1970s, he wrote and produced songs for other artists like Aretha Franklin and Dionne Warwick. This song went all the way to hit the #1 spot on both the Billboard Hot 100 and the Billboard Soul charts in the summer of 1975. People of all races danced to this song all over the world. The song is definitely a banger indeed!!!
Yes but we didn't do leg lifts as we sashayed around. Maybe the bump and some partner twirls.
Anyone looking for deep poetic lyrics won’t find it here, but this song was an absolute game changer in the early days of disco (1975). Frequently a song would inspire a dance, but in this case The Hustle dance was being performed in New York clubs and it inspired Van McCoy to write this song. It actually did win a Grammy for pop instrumental. Jay, if you’re gonna learn some of the moves you have to have the leisure suit and platform sole shoes lol. Please take pictures and share with us.
Yep. Pretty sure once they wrote the title down on a napkin they said "What more do we need to say?"
...and the leisure suit must be a pastel aquamarine color, with an open neck flowered polyester shirt. The platform shoes should be white. And get a perm (haircut like Travolta in Saturday Night Fever) and wear a silver or gold necklace with an Italian horn. Mood ring optional.
Jay's hair curls naturally.
@@josephmilitello647 hell yeah mood ring I had one of those
The lyrics is what took so long to write the song the lyrics took a long time😅😅
This took me way back to my teen years! The Hustle was huge back in the disco days of the 70s! Amber is right, it wasn't so much about the song as it was what you could bring to the dance floor. But this song and the Hustle were undeniably so much fun! Thanks for the reaction! ✌💙✌
This song is basically an instrumental, which was pretty common in the 60s and 70s. A few other instrumentals from that time include "Classical Gas," "Feels So Good," "Love is Blue" and the theme song from Hawaii 5-O.
Oh....love Classical Gas!
OMG. My sister and her girlfriends were teenagers when this hit the main stream. One of her favorite tunes to light up the dance floor. The Hustle was the rage! Glad you liked it! Peace!
Gotta do the Village People
Jay & Amber, this song and dance was huge!!! Van's only US Billboard Hot 100 top 40 hit (#1).
In a similar vein, there's "Love's Theme" by The Love Unlimited Orchestra & Barry White. Barry White might be an artist you guys would like.
Yes. I feel like they reacted to some of his later music, but they need to listen to the long versions of his orchestral music from the 70s.
Great song.
Love it!! Around same time is Sky high by jigsaw and fly Robin fly..
Walter Murphy's Apple Bottom Band's "Fifith Of Beethoven" I would also add as well.
@@seanswinton6242 Definitely Fifth of Beethoven. That was the jam.
There were some popular dance instrumentals back then, TSOP was another big one!
Back when music was from actual real life musical instruments...and not synths or machines. The special effects then, was the real sound. 👍👍
Synthesizers were actually a BIG part of disco.
@@DerekDominoes analog synth . Moog was real big
Not exactly true, but, yeah.
Great reaction as usual Jay and Amber, in 1977 one of the biggest dance hits was "Good Times" by Chic. It was a party starter and has a killer baseline.
It's the same baseline as Rapper's Delight! 😊
This was one of my grandmother's favorite disco songs. I grew up in the 70s and 80s, so my grandmother introduced me to this song, and we used to dance to it. This holds a special place for me because of that. And it is a cool song, let's face it!
Brings back good memories of the hustle dance.. we could do it for hours! What big fun!
Great memory! God bless you and your grandmother.
This was such a beautiful song , I hate the way people trash Disco !! There was so much good music and artists who don't get enough credit for what they did. In all forms of music there's some good, some bad .✌️
When times were so chill & relaxing. You can actually enjoy yourself at dances & parties without the craziness of today.
Hearing this song is like stepping into a time machine...instantly you're transported back to the '70s. Another ultimate tune from back then is "Rock Your Baby" by George McCrae but be sure to get the extended version. It's essentially soul music dressed up as disco. It was written by Wayne Casey, the 'K.C.' of K.C. and the Sunshine Band.
Now this takes me back to the fabulous 1970s. I was 18 years old, and frequented nightclubs and discos, and this song was MASSIVE! I can’t help but smiling with happy memories listening to this song. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.
Another big hit of the Disco Era was Patrick Hernandez ' s Born to be Alive. Unique voice and driving beat.
YES! also, "Don't Leave Me This Way" by Thelma Houston.
I think they already did this one
Adore that tune.
LaFlavour Mandolay is a classic disco song. Impossible to sit still through it.
@@781Florist Whitney Houston’s mother!
Yay!! Although you guys have reacted to a lot of music, the Disco genre is a whole other sound!! I was Sweet 16 in the Summer of '75 and all of us in these comments almost have the same stories - it was such a special time of our lives!! I used to sneak my boyfriend in my window and we would dance like crazy!! I STILL LOVE to dance at 63. Van McCoy is from my city of Washington DC so he is a legend to us. Don't miss out on the other Disco hits 🤗🤗💃💃💃
Hey your a year older and from my hometown! Life was so nice back then and there!
The hustle was a dance. If you danced in the disco, you knew how to hustle. This was earlier disco, in its prime. I liked later disco from the late 70s when it was dying. Evelyn Champagne King, Patrice Rushen, Teena Marie, Loleatta Halloway, D Train, Lime, Dan Hartman to name a few. 2 of my favs are Dan Hartman- Vertigo/Relight my fire. Gino Soccio- Dancer. Keep up the great reactions. It's so uplifting to see you experience music I grew up loving. My fav was at the end of War Pigs when they sped it up. The look on Jay's face was great!.😁🤘🙏
You missed one of my favorite singers, the Queen of Disco Donna Summers.
The 70s , the diverse music, disco, soft rock , rock , southern rock country rock and this, fantastic I wouldn't change the music of my life for anything.
With you on that one! The diversity & creativity was unbelievable! I was born in 1971 & love everything 70s. If I could go back there, I would do it in a heartbeat (& stay there!!)
@@Go-tee71 Right beside you on that Go-tee.
Do the Hustle!! I lived it back in the 70's!
Still remember The Simpson's using this song on a flashback episode. Funny.
You guys should check out another song in the same vein, "Everybody was Kung Foo Fighting".
The Hustle is a dance
That's what I thought too. Was what they were doing in the video? I thought it was more sexy than that, but I was born in the mid-70s, so I don't know much about disco.
Thank you so very much young bloods for finally playing some music that is music. Have a Blessed Evening you two's. Adios Baby. Adios
Fantastic choice. Loved this. I had it on 8 track. This reminds me so much of the ‘Shaft’ theme song (1971) by Isaac Hayes. Shaft was an African American private detective…a real sex machine. It won the best song Academy Award in 1972. I was 8. it was very techno for its time. It was disco before there was disco. It’s friggin awesome and so damn sexy. There is a cool in studio video which totally take you back.
Have they done "Shaft?" They definitely need to do Issac Hayes.
This has been used in LOADS of commercials, movies, TV shows, etc. It's truly iconic!
Not one crotch grab, no one twerk....actual dancing, who knew?
No same sex BS either.
The corniest song next to Disco Duck and Everybody was Kung Fu Fighting. By the way those people weren't doing the hustle. Lol The hustle was the earlier version of the electric slide.
Guys the Hustle was huge hit number one on Billboard pop R&B Disco and Dance charts lot of instrumentals between 1973 and 1986 most of them reached number one this was Van's only song sadly Van passed away from a heart attack in 1979 RIP 🌺
Want some more disco flute, then check out "Superman" by Herbie Mann. Herbie is a jazz artist. Also try "Star Wars" by Meco (not for flute). You probably will want to find the single edit of that one, because the album version is around 17 minutes. Van McCoy produced records for a lot of artists.
Don‘t forget Silver Convention with ‚Fly Robin Fly‘ . It’s a great Disco Hit from the 70‘s.
This instrumental always makes me think of another great instrumental, Love's Theme by Barry White. You should try a reaction to it.
My mother loved dancing to this song & every time it came on the radio she wanted to dance with one of us kids, I was 12 when this came out ✌💖☮
the orchestration arrangements by Van McCoy, were off the chain. he composed this classic.
My ten ten year old music choices were really quite sophisticated. I loved disco. You two bring so much positivity and magic. I am UK based and wanna say thanks for spreading love through music across all genres❤
Huge theme song of the disco 70's. Picture it RSR, every friday and Saturday night you'd dress to the hilt, hit the clubs with your friends and drink and dance the night away with anyone and everyone. Van McCoy was part of this part in history. The lights and effects were always poppin' and a whole mellow fun groove settled over the club. It was great, so many terrific artists....Bee Gees, Donna Summer, KC and the Sunshine Band, Village People, ABBA, and Van McCoy!
Haven't heard this for years! So good to hear it again....gives me 'The Love Boat' vibes. I love everything 70s!
Yes.
Barry Manilow sang The Love Boat theme, if I'm remembering right.
@@LiberalsArePoop Jack Jones sang the theme song
@@Go-tee71 thanks, I couldn't remember for sure.
Ah, The Hustle! That takes me back to my childhood! For other awesome (imho) disco songs try Boney M and their songs "Rasputin", "Ma Baker", and an actually very beautiful rendition of "Rivers of Babylon". ...................... Now I'm gonna have "The Hustle" stuck in my head all day! Thanks! 😅
In the 50's, 60's, and 70's, there were always instrumentals reaching the Top 10 or 20. They were always very catchy earworms like this one. Some were movie themes and a number of Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass albums reached the very top of the charts. And then there is the Allman Brothers' "Jessica", a rock instrumental like you've never heard.
Don’t forget Hugh Masakela, Booker T And The MGs, Dick Dale “King of the Surf Guitar”, and the number one selling instrumental group of all time The Ventures. Good for you for opening me up to bringing back some great musical memories.
Yes! Not forgetting The Shadows, and a progressive Dutch group called 'Focus' who had a hit with an instrumental called 'Sylvia', I think around '73...? 'Jessica' was the original theme used for the UK's 'Top Gear' programme!
(( DISCO )) HARRY THUMMAN - Underwater 1979 High Energy DISCO fast moving nonstop beats Way Ahead of it's time FUNK ROCK and Electronica it's fun and Energetic music it's gonna get you moving on the Dance Floors DISCO 79'
I love you guy's you make me smile everyday 😊
If this doesn't get you in a groove I don't know what to say. An iconic jam. That guitar lick. Those horns. And that flute my goodness. 💥
This song has been used in countless commercials over the years-definitely an ear worm! Loved watching you Chair Hustle! 🤣
It was played at EVERY club, EVERY skating rink, & EVERY wedding!!
Iconic
Gloria Gaynor - "Never Can Say Goodbye", Donna Summer - "Love to Love You Baby", KC & the Sunshine Band - "Get Down Tonight", "That's the Way I Like It", those were some of the songs that kicked things off in 1975. Then came songs from Andrea True, Thelma Houston, Sylvester, Village People, Silver Convention and others! "Saturday Night Fever" didn't come out until 1977!
Van McCoy was a record producer this song was a game changer
Sometimes you don't need singing in a song it's the Music 🎵🎶 that does all the singing and if the best is perfect it will just get you up and Dancing ( DAVID SHIRE - Manhattan Skyline 1977 Saturdays Night Fever album DISCO DISCO DISCO
Such a feel good song. Brings me back to being a kid when me and my brother would dance around the house watching Soul Train and also trying to learn the Hustle.

They are truly one of the best families in the United States. They clearly love each other, and their children are beyond precious.
Yes. And so surprising when they show us that there really are music fans out there who have never heard some of the most iconic songs ever.
(Like The Hustle, and Journey's Faithfully)
❤🔥Please react to family band The Sylvers -Boogie Fever -Hot Line -High School Dance -Thanks!!!
Oh, man. I remember being like 10 years old and trying to learn "The Hustle"! I so want to break it out at a wedding reception if this song ever comes on. LOL.
That sounds adorable! Too bad there wasn't more video back then. A 10 year old trying to those moves would have been super cute. 😃
@@Dain75 I was determined. LOL. These days, I'd have to watch a lot of RUclips videos of people doing "The Hustle". I've forgotten virtually all of the moves.
There are three more huge hits from this same era. you have to do..... "Carl Douglas's - Kung Fu Fighting" and "The Hues Corporation's - Rock The Boat", And then Eric Clapton's - I Shot The Sheriff".
This song ushered in the sound of Disco back in 1975. If you watched Soul Train or American Bandstand during that time, you would see the dancers doing 'the hustle'.
Amber, you have heard this before. It was part of Selena’s Disco Medley. You haven’t, however, gotten back to Selena. She’s a perfect choice for Female Friday!!! Try “Como La Flor”, “Bidi Bidi Bom Bom” or “Techno Cumbia”. I don’t understand the words either, but I love to listen to her sing.
It’s all about the dance! No words. Just do the Hustle!!
Another awesome, mostly instrumental disco-era song that you might enjoy is called "TSOP" (The Sound of Philadelphia) by MFSB (Mother Father Sister Brother). It was used as the theme song for the "Soul Train" TV series.
Excellent reaction. I will be honest, I appreciated neither the song nor the dance enough in the day. Nevertheless I enjoyed both. My girlfriend at the time like to go out dancing. And she taught me The Hustle.
I was so grateful that she did, even though I was kind of in “anti-disco“ kind of a guy. But that was all on the surface. Because I really enjoyed so much the dance and the dancing.
This song didn’t need any words, except for “do the hustle“, because the dance swept the world. And everybody was “Doing the Hustle“.
While I had been into the freestyle of dancing from the late 60s through the early 70s. I really appreciated this kind of ballroom coordinated dancing coming back. While I still can appreciate free dancing, it’s so much cooler to be dancing with someone else and with other people in formations. It’s one of the reasons why although I’ve never gotten good at it, I love country dancing.
Thanks for doing this reaction.
Guys! "Don't Leave Me This Way" by Thelma Houston for next disco reaction please. It's Absolute Fire!!!💥
The hustle was a popular 70’s dance. My daddy taught it to me as a kid…good memories
Greetings! I am a very recent subscriber. I watched your reaction to Gloria Estefan’s “Turn The Beat Around.” You MUST listen to the original version, by Vickie Sue Robinson.
This song would come on and everyone would run on the dance floor because it was a line dance. you're right it was unforgettable
Haha, now you need to check out Little Eva doing the "Locomotion" from the 1960's. Fun!!! This could be a great Female Friday song!
I remember dancing with my friends after work to this song. It was such a kick.
I am 63 and was not a big fan of DISCO. But I do remember having so much fun creating NEW choreographed line dancing to this song. As everyone in my generation did. In the 70's there was a HOUSEPARTY SOMEWHERE every weekend !!!! Big afro's Bellbottom-hip hugger jeans, Silky portrait butterfly collar shirts and platform shoes !!! It was a miracle we could walk at all !!! FEMALE FRIDAY JOYCE "BabyJean " Kennedy of MOTHER'S FINEST "Give you all the Love " Live at ROCKPALAST 1977. The Queen of FUNK/ROCK. I swear you will do more of this Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Iconic group !!!!
I was living in Germany at the time this song came out (my dad was in the US Army) - no internet, no cable TV, no streaming services - and even all the way overseas everyone knew this song. Teenagers would be teaching each other the proper steps in between classes, "do the hustle!" was sort of a catchphrase signifying how cool you were...this song was HUGE.
Songs without lyrics....instrumentals. 😉 sorry for the sarcasm.
16yoa in England to young to use pubs, to young to use nightclubs/discos, but I did and I weren't on my own. One thing about being English and British is we know how to bend the rules.
I remember when I was a child and hearing this, and watching my older sister dance to it. Trust me when I say, this was the Macarena of the mid-70s... the major difference being, "The Hustle" has held up a lot better over time. Despite this being a monster #1 hit, sadly, Van never hit the Top 40 again. The closest he cam was his follow-up song, "Change With the Times", which is also a decent tune.
If you want a great disco choice for Female Friday, check out Amii Stewart's spaced-out version of "Knock On Wood".
A lot of “disco” music is instrumental because it was all about the dance. The Hustle was one of the big club dances. I have one for you, “RISE,” by Herb Alpert, it is 🔥
"Rock The Boat" by the Hues Corporation was a very early Disco hit in the Summer of 1974.
Oooh pure disco, so 70's❤️. The ladies with the "pants" were Pan's People who were a dance troupe who appeared on Top Of The Pops (weekly UK pop music show which featured the charts).
Taking me back, guys! Bought a KTel disco compilation album back in the day and it had a footstep chart you unfolded and put on the floor to learn the actual steps to "The Hustle." Um, I did not master those steps! 🙂❤
Ah you two got me tonight. I grew up dancing to this at the clubs. Ya know I wish I could dance today but arthritis it has taken it's toll. You two must take lessons. It was awesome. Thanks for the tears. Enjoy dancing while you can!!!!
In 75,this hustle came out and that was the embryo for the disco craze. You had to be fired astaire to dance like that. Hard to free style to this thank god by 1980,,new wave came in and disco died.
ITS BEATIFUL, GREAT MUSIC... REACTION PLEASE AHHH THE SHUFLE; ALSO DE VAN MAcCOY, THANKS...
I'd recommend Andrea True Connection and the song "More, More, More" from the 70s as well.
I remember dancing to this at a Jr. High School dance. We didn't "know the dance" but we loved the groove, and we let it move us. The song was so emblematic of the time that "Doing the Hustle" came to mean just dancing to disco music, no matter the song.
Have you guys listen to KC and the Sunshine Band? Get Down Tonight and Shake Your Booty.
For me Disco is like Christmas Music...it's just happy sounding.
My little nephew use to say Do the Hot Sauce! The Commodores Machine Gun and Kool and the Gang's Open Sesame are two other songs that come to mind when I hear this.
I think Disco Inferno from The Trammps is the ultimate disco track. Full 10 minute version is a must.
You must check out Disco Lady by Johnnie Taylor. You'll love the bass line.
Every School Dance did the Hustle !!! Gotta say though that the way we did The Hustle was more fun and not as "elegant" as it seems in the video.
6th grade P.E. 1975/76, we learned the basic dance...coolio
Note a lot of dances were named after songs. This one was the other way around.
The Hustle was a dance first, started by Puerto Rican teens to dance st Catholic School dances where the nuns wouldn't allow the children to dance close so they would dance apart to faster upbeat songs.
This spread to adults and a whole dance craze was formed. This song came in to put a specific song to the dance.
