The unit will function better if you rotate it in that space so the discharge duct lines up directly with the hole in your cabinetry. The 180 degree slinky duct you added will actually reduce airflow. Having the unit pull return air from the far side of that compartment is not a problem.

Wow! I had to look up Mermaid to see what happened since they seamed to be a top brand. Looks like they did some rebranding and are now FREEDOM MEDICAL & MARINE SOLUTIONS. Not sure how this relates to Mermaid Manufacturing in terms of parts and warranty though.
