    Hey Randy, I have an Ice Cream banana palm in central FL. First crop of about 20 to 30 bananas. I cut one off a few weeks ago and it turned black instead of yellow. So I guess I picked it to soon. I was told this was a Blue banana tree. They have filled out more since then and the leaves are starting to die. Should I pick one more and see what happens?
    We also had a small crop of the lady finger bananas are few years ago and they were best bananas I've ever tasted but the new trees haven't produced since. Thanks.

      Hi
      Fruits on a well fed, happy banana plant should fatten up pretty dramatically near the end of development, and if that isn't happening, then your plants need to be fed a bit more frequently. Bananas are greedy, hungry plants. It's too late for feeding for this year, but start fertilizing again once it warms up again on spring.
      Cheers

    in your experience what's the difference in sugar level when you harvest the fruit green like that vs wait and get them ripe from the tree,the difference in mango is huge.

    • @Sheikyerbouti8
      @Sheikyerbouti8  5 лет назад +4

      Almost every other fruit, it is better to harvest them as close to perfect ripenes, mangoes included. Not bananas though. Tree ripened bananas taste funny. The sugars in bananas are from starch being broken down by enzymes. So as long as the fruits are thick and plump with starch, they will get as sweet as that cultivar gets once they ripen, but the flavors are best when ripened off of the tree.

      Tari Newton I have a couple tips for you first water bananas love water! The flower end on mine is always fairly large and will eventually die back it cAn be cut off once the bananas stop forming like video says take note of the shape of the bananas as they grow maybe even a picture every couple weeks and when they start to become round and fat you can harvest them beware there usually very heavy so get some help once harvested the plant is done so cut it back leaving a ft or so trunk behind and it’s best to lay the cut off plant around your other bananas you should have new smaller banana plants growing from the original banana plant. You can hang the banana cluster or trim them in sections like you’d buy in the store they will begin to get ripe one thing I love is making banana ice cream with nothing but fresh bananas once they’ve gotten really ripe home grown bananas get amazingly sweet the ripper they get to the point where you’d never eat a store bought banana but trust me they turn into a banana pudding almost when dark brown or black. Hope that helps anything I trim offf my banana plants I drop it around them the old leaves and old trunks are the new ones food. Cheers

      There are literally thousands of banana cultivars, but you are probably referring to namwa. You have to get your stock from a trusted source. If it is a namwa instead of the true blue java/ice cream, then you will still have delicious bananas. More delicious in my opinion. Either way you win, Cheers

    • @Sheikyerbouti8
      @Sheikyerbouti8  6 лет назад +3

      The smaller flowers with the skinnier bananas attached to them, that fall off later, are male flowers. Once an inflorescence switches over from the fatter female flowers that develop fruit, to the skinny male flowers that drop off, you have as many bananas from that inflorescence as you are going to get. Feeding heavily this year, is what will get you more fruit next year. If you have any further questions please don't hesitate to ask, and be sure to subscribe! Cheers!

    Do you have to cut the stalk down after you have harvested the bananas? Or will the same stalk produce again?

    • @Sheikyerbouti8
      @Sheikyerbouti8  8 лет назад +6

      Yes you have to cut it. Each pseudostem will only bloom once. After they bloom and produce bananas, they will not grow any more inflorescences, or leaves either. The corm underground will grow new pseudostems. You should allow one new pseudostem to grow each year, and prune the rest off. So you will have one from last year to bloom and produce, and one new one to bloom the following year. Never allow more pseudostems than that to grow. If there are too many pseudostems on one corm, the sizes of the bunches and the size of the fruit will be smaller. Cheers

    I have a banana tree/plant here in FL .. actually a bunch of them. I am gathering when the new trees start to come up I should cut them down if none of the more mature trees have produced fruit yet? I also read that if the heart of the bloom with the fruit on it is still attached and there are ridges left on between the fruit and the heart, they will eventually fruit as well so if you can remove just the bunches of bananas that is better? Is that false? I saw you removed what appeared to be the entire fruit stem?

    • @Sheikyerbouti8
      @Sheikyerbouti8  7 лет назад +1

      No the stem will not produce more bananas later. The first several rows of flowers that are produced are all female flowers. They have a fatter base which turns into the fruit. The smaller ones that grow later, and drop off all over the ground, are male flowers. Pollination is not necessary to get fruit, nor is it possible with most fruiting varieties since they are triploid, so once the inflorescence switches from fat female flowers to skinny little male flowers, you have as many bananas as you are going to get. Some varieties produce many rows of female flowers, and others will produce only a few, but the overall health of the plant will have a huge effect on how many you get. Pruning off extraneous pups is a good way to get larger bananas and more of them per rack. I leave a maximum of two large pseudostems per corm with two pups per year to be next year's fruiting pseudostems. One large pseudostem per corm with one pup for next year is even better. Also just keeping the soil healthy by adding lots of organic matter and top dressing more every year will make huge differences. I fertilize monthly with my own granular mix (7-7-27), at one pound per large pseudostem. Bananas are hungry, but if you want to go organic, make sure to give them potassium. There is a lot of argument over whether or not to cut off the blooming tip of the inflorescence once it has switched to male flowers, but I've both left it on and cut it off and I see no difference at all. The tip (heart) is edible, so if you do cut it off you can make a stir fry or a curry with it. Good luck!

    how long do they take to ripen? I have some bananas going, but have no idea what kind they are. I tried picking one last harvest while they were green, and they came out super hard and very starchy (gave me cotton mouth when I tried it in the hard state). Does that mean I picked way too early? They were rounded out.

    • @Sheikyerbouti8
      @Sheikyerbouti8  4 года назад +4

      It means you ate them too early. Let them ripen longer. Once you cut them, you still have to allow the fruits to ripen. It takes about four months from flower to harvest, and then an additional week or two, sometimes three, for the cut fruits to ripen. These time periods are aproximate.

    • @Sheikyerbouti8
      @Sheikyerbouti8  5 лет назад +1

      Your first question has to do with what is called leaning. Some cultivars are more prone to leaning than others. Particularly cavendish group bananas. It usually happens long before the bananas are ready to harvest. You can prop up the pseudostem by wedging a 2x4 under it to prop it up.
      As far as your second question, I made a video on that topic. Here it is: ruclips.net/video/03fJo7GXw48/видео.html

    • @Sheikyerbouti8
      @Sheikyerbouti8  2 года назад +1

      Little Prince is definitely a LOT smaller than Truly Tiny. I'm trying to get one to bloom now. The smaller the dwarf banana, the longer it takes to get the corm large enough to bloom and produce. I'm at about 16 months from a pinky finger sized Little Prince tissue culture clone. While the corm is getting fatter, and the pseudostem is thickening out, it is still less than a foot tall. By 16 months, a Truly Tiny will be around 3 feet. Truly Tiny takes about 2 years to start producing, from a small sword sucker, but then will produce every 7-9 months just like any other cavendish variety. So I'm guessing that Little Prince will take longer and require more special attention to get it there. Maybe it will, but maybe it won't ever. I've never talked to anyone who has gotten fruit from one, but I'm trying anyway.

      The first banana plant I showed is called Truly Tiny. They max out at about three feet tall. It took about two years to bloom for the first time, but that was from a tissue culture clone the size of my pinky finger. I'm guessing that It will bloom again next Spring. The second banana in the video, with the really new bananas that are not ripe yet is called Double, or sometimes Mahoi, which means twins in Hawaiian. Those are supposed to produce two inflorescences per pseudostem, but this has never happened for me. The corm may need to get to be more mature before it does this, or I could have been sold a mislabel. That one sends up an inflorescence about every six months. It has the shortest period between blooming of any of the seven banana varieties I have growing. The third set of bananas is called Ice cream, which are the tastiest banana I grow. They produce every year for me. If you have any further questions please don't hesitate to ask. Cheers!

    • @Sheikyerbouti8
      @Sheikyerbouti8  2 года назад

      For bananas, starting size of the plant is irrelevant, and actually the smaller the plant the better. A small, vigorous, sword sucker, will usually outgrow, and quickly surpass a larger rootbound specimen.
      In the tropics, for most varieties, it takes 6 months for a tiny pup to grow its first inflorescence. It can take up to 9 months, for some of the slower growing varieties.
      Here in florida, it's more like 9 months to a year, although I have achieved blooming in 6 months from a tissue culture clone that started out the size of my pinky finger.
      The farther you are from tropical conditions, the longer it will take, and the less likely you will be to get edible fruit, unless you have a large heated greenhouse.
      It takes approximately 4 months from the emergence of the inflorescence, until the harvest of that rack of bananas, but I never go by time, I go by the development of the fruits.
      I hope this answered your questions

    The formula to successful RUclips according to the conventions is short weekly updates as you develop the monthly long video..

      Thank you so much. I'm wrestling with an issue right now with a lot of my videos, because I have many half-finished videos using an old camera that has terrible sound that everybody hates. I have recently spent a lot of money on a much better camera, with much better sound, and I'm collecting video now, but I'm probably going to be scrapping all the old video, so I'm starting over again for a lot of those projects. I will be posting more videos, though. I have many ginger projects in the works as well as lots of rare fruit projects. Thank you for your patience.

      Awesome! Here's another video I made, that you might find useful. I've got another banana video in the works right now too, that I'll post eventually (soon hopefully). ruclips.net/video/W1sSkj6e7zU/видео.html.

      Quiet useful I must say . I grow mine organically and I use cow dung and chickens' droppings though I just learnt from ur video that each steam requires a gram of fertiliser my question now is... What quantity of chicken/cow dropping should I put ?

      That's a harder question to answer. Organic gardening is never quite as exact. I'd say that if what you are doing is working, then keep doing it. The one thing I'd suggest is to make some potash from the ashes of burned wood (wood ash only, not coal ash). From the potash the bananas will receive potassium. Potassium is the most important of the macro-nutrients for bananas. Do not apply raw unleached wood ash directly to the plant though. The pH will be way too high. Email me at randystropicalplants@gmail.com if you want a more detailed description of how to make potash. Cheers amigo!

      Kinda. Truly Tiny racks don't completely invert. They sort of grow sideways.

      wrong, the banana fruit itself points up and thus grows upwards to the sky as it's growing
