Whoa, this video didn't quite take months to come out! Amazing
CORRECTIONS AND DISCLAIMERS
-Not a real picture of Loring Miner, points to whoever can guess the doctor who's likeness I stole.
-While this video focuses on the Kansas origin theory, other theories do hold weight and I'm happy to be proven wrong in the future.
Hello
Another video in one month? A miracle has happened.
@muzzzeeeek The real problem for proving the origins of Spanish Flu is that in 1918, much of the world had rampant disease going on because of the war, so their medical records are next to useless for isolating this special flu from the literally thousands of respiratory cases being processed every week. For a disease to stand out at this time, it had to have distinctive symptoms unique to itself, like Smallpox and Measles with their particular skin manifestations. Spanish Flu is essentially indistinguishable from other flu except for its extraordinarily quick onset and mortality in able-bodied adults. This is why Miner's observations stands out in the historical record: he was dealing in a peaceful and relatively healthy place so he could notice the difference. Odds are that Spanish flu was killing hundreds of soldiers and civilians all over the world before Kansas had its outbreak, but the doctors, be they French or Chinese or German, were all just writing something like "respiratory infection" on the reports. So I think Feature History is wise to acknowledge we probably won't ever know.
history repeated itself
@muzzzeeeek
Remember at that time, China was in a state of civil war and unlike the US or Europe there was no functioning government to keep records of everything. You cant record cases when there is nobody to record it.
This is also true in Russia who was also in a state of civil war but seems to have low number of cases
Just imagining that in 100 years some other Aussie dude will make a video on Corona
Australia won’t exist by then
@Hernando Malinche We'll be invaded by aliens who will gift Australia to Elon Musk after he betrays the human race, and he will rename it Muskland.

Actually! It’s a Gundam reference.
In the Universal Century timeline 0079, Australia got hit by a colony drop, accidentally. The Colony Drop was meant for Britain where the Earth Federation’s secret base was.
Australia will be just another Chinese colony by then
Hernando Malinche Australia will be taken over by emus

I bet the Fourth reich will arise in June of something
Current America is as degenerate as Weimar Germany though, so we've got Weimamerica down.
I mean, didn't the Great Depression really start in earnest in November of 1929? I think Black Tuesday was in late October.
So I guess it was technically in the 1920s, but just barely.
Likewise, the pandemic was more of less over by 1920.
Honestly, the 1920s were one of the best decades of all time, for Americans anyway.
@@nathanielcrosby2426 If a german person was involved, then we are still on the right path.
My great-grandma said that during the 1918 pandemic her house was the only one on the block without any deaths because they didn't allow guests and they forced everyone who did enter their home to wash their hands.
My grandgrandfather survived the whole war in the trenches and died from the Spanish Flu a month afetar returning home according to his gravestone ( i didn’t meet him obviously )
As much as it probably was a painful death, I am regardless happy for him. That he had a chance to see the end of the war before his demise. One last moment of peace, before his eternal rest.
I've lived in Kansas my entire life, and I never knew the Spanish Flu originated here. I went to uni 15 minutes from Camp Funston.
Well it is still possible it came from somewhere else. It's just the most prominent theory.
It’s a theory not fact
The reason it became such a bug thing around the world to associate it with Spain was because it contracted global news when King Alfonso XIII contracted the flu, and back in those days, monarchy was everything, so this was quite important
Quarantine isn’t new to me.
It’s called being introvert.
When as an Introvert you realize that your lifestyle isn't really affected by forced isolation...
Being introverted is a new step in human evolution, dealing with situations like these.
Same here. I just laugh seeing other people panic about not seeing other people.
Being extroverted sucks because all your friends are introverts.

BTW, Spanish Flu "killed the young and fit" Covid kills 80yr olds and AIDS patients.

COVID-19 appears: Oh it's no big deal, it's just a flu.
Spanish Flu: Am I a joke to you?
Spanish flu, no. Covid, yes. Covid has a lot of catching up to do before it's even close to comparable
Bill Seccam not really, if covid replacedthe Spanish flu back then it would have been a different story. The reason we have comparably few deaths is because of modern medicine and the fact that it’s only been a novel strain for a few months as compared to years.
@@justamustache2324 but what medicine is being used in mass to save lives? There is no vaccine. Medicines that doctors prescribe are being shunned down. For a healthy person, COVID 19 will have 1% chance or less to kill them.
And people who have COVID-19 but die because of another cause are being counted as death of the virus.
"It's just a cold, bro."

I love this video, and it tells me many information about the disease.
For some reason, I keep hearing people call it the 1918 flu instead of the Spanish flu
It's more accurate at least
It's moe accurate and in accordance to the most recent disease naming & classification treaty from a couple years ago.
Covid 18
Because it wasn't truly from Spain.
Many people here in Spain strongly dislike the name "Spanish flu". The term used here in Spain is 1918 flu.

Can you make a discord? I’d love to join one if you made it.
In 1918 my country Samoa was hit hard by the Spanish Flu (Influenza) by a New Zealand Cargo Ship that held many passengers affected by the virus. This spread around the Country and killed 20-24% of the population.
Responsibly written and well-done. Smart verbiage.
Good topic, very important stuff. Humanity has been in a regular struggle with epidemics for time immemorial.
Hi, can you make a video of Che Guevera? Thankyou!
You should look into the Smallpox eradicators. We need a feel good story and one that reminds us that we lived with pandemics for decades while thriving.

A comment for the algorithm: good video mate
In Puerto Rico 11000 died in three months out of a total of 216000 sick. The influenza was first recorded during June of 1918. Yet the medical community was unsure of what thus sickness was as it symptoms where similar to those of dengue. Yet the Influenza was later found to be spreading not thanks to mosquitos but from person to person. After the October 11th Earthquake sanitation conditions on the west coast quickly worsened. Mean while at San Juan, the capital of Puerto Rico, the military base Camp Las Casas has more than 2500 sick with a total of 20 military physicians and nurses available to attend the sick. Plus the main medical center of the island lacked medical personnel and medicine. And this was for the municipalities that where fortunate enough to have medical facilities. The economic strains also worsened as the war dragged on ans aid was shifted to help with the earthquake refugies. For example of my home town of Mayagüez, which was devastated by the earthquake and subsequent tsunami, had 3000 sick on the 26th of November. The situation get worse when a telegram that was sent to the capital informed the governor that the municipality only had 6 physicians; 8 nurses and practitioners; and 3 medical assistants. It wasnt until the first days of December when the government implemented measures to fight the Influenza. Yet this wasnt enough. Our government pleaded the US congress to help their citizens in combating the Influenza yet they didn't deem it worth it to give Puerto Rico financial aid. Yet, by mid December, with the help of local juntas, the Red Cross, and military authorities, the Influenza was reported to be under control with scattered cases popping up during the first months of 1919.
Imperial response is so poor in India that local volunteers went thousands of miles on bycycle to deliver just simple cough medicines.

Hey! I did a Spanish Flu special, too! Great video! Keep up the good work! Peace out and Rock on! ✌️ 🤘
I like to think this Coronavirus is like that comet event you get in EU4, and every time press, "The economy fools!"
What other options do you we have, other than opening the country (increasing the number of new cases by a somewhat bigger margin) or remaining closed (economic stagnation and downfall but decreasing the number of new infectees)
It can be worse to do nothing, more people WILL die, and people are money makers, so in the short term the economy will take a hit, atleast the nation's most important resources are better off.
We should open, but for us to do it this early is dangerous. More people will become infected. Another issue is that some idiots are preferring to believe the president or some other person who knows nothing about science or medicine and thinks that the nation's top doctors (who have spent years working in medicine) are just liars either to control or working on some non existent agenda
Socialism
You have to understand that quarantine is made to get a big workload off the medical system´s back, which if we opened up again right now might create an even bigger economic crisis because the medical system is overloaded and nearly destroyed.
I feel it's important to note that at the end of the day, what saved us from all dying of the Spanish Flu wasn't what we did, it's what it did. The final variant was asymptomatic within enough people that the disease was just running out of new people to infect and kill off, and it naturally died off even in the places that weren't under quarantine. Also I should note that unlike the Spanish Flu, this one is far less dangerous to healthy people. The young who die in this pandemic almost always also suffered from obesity, diabetes, or high blood pressure. Hence why Sweden never locked down anything and to this day is acting like nothing is happening and has a death rate only 27% higher than the average, while the UK locked down EVERYTHING and has a death rate 67% higher than the average, because Brits tend to live unhealthier lives.
So if anything, what this disease is, is a reckoning for the fatties.
The ability to speak doesn't grant you intelligence. Your post is horribly wrong and terribly written.
