"See that 4104... with the propped engine door..." lol
That is exactly what I would like to have, all the windows still intact, and nice skins, with a blank canvas for roof paint, nice wheels😎
If it were my bus I would install a small panel in the engine bay with start switch, oil pressure gauge, temp gauge, air pressure gauge, and volt meter. Back in my Navy days in the early 80's the base recreation shop had a 4104 conversation to a camper. It was unused for many years because it would run away and no one knew how to fix it. I fixed it, tuned it up, and did the brakes. I got it back in driving condition and I could check it out. Ten of us at a time would take it to Las Vegas on weekends. It was a blast.
Your first major engine rebuild at the new place. Can hardly wait to see you work your magic on the old detroit!
iBiana Doubt I thought 💭 that’s what he had planned for the storage container but I’m sure Scott has a plan up his sleeve
I do think there's plans for a small shed. Kind of remember an off hand comment
with that flywheel moving around, it changes the starter gear engagement too. ( that can hang it possibly)
You need a Vice Grip Garage patented 'Lone Wolf 9000' starter trigger.
A feller could use one of those. I hear they work like factry.
Some buses are fitted with a second starter button in the engine bay.
That looks like the best set of sheetmetal and trim I've seen, even if it needs work.
That's a good looking bus...Looking forward to watching you fix it !!
Love how the front bumper wraps around to the door.... looks awesome...👍
Few years ago I had opportunity to get one of these beauties for pennies and I had to pass due to no place to store.
I'm still kicking myself in the ass!!
I would be proud to own one
amazing...just as you moved the bus..its raining! ;)
Pretty straight bus, make it run as good as it looks...
Alright, engine rebuild. Looking foward to those episodes.
Why I love my remote Start, stop.
You wore me out Scott.🤗🤗🤗
She is a tired old soul but I'm sure you will have her back in the fast lane soon. Sounded like a air chamber or hose leaking when you had the brakes applied. Thanks for the video.
Sounds and smells are abundant for my memories. My high school football seasons games/away...we rode a bus similar to these. All of us and our equipment always smelled like diesel. What great memories. This was late 82-86. Love your videos, very informative and I enjoy the equipment. GaMike 82fxwg
Hi Scott. It is possible to tell by a compression test if it's valves or rings.
1) Dry compression test.
Test compression as you would normally. Note value for each cylinder.
2) Wet compression test
Squirt some ordinary engine oil into each cylinder and crank over a few seconds.
Now take each compression again. Note values and compare.
If any of the values has changed (increased), it's probably because the oil temporarily 'sealed' the rings.
If there is no change, the rings were good (i.e. the oil made no difference) and it's the valves.
Regards Mark in the UK
Always left a good amount of water in the bottom of the tank after it was emptied. Along with some digester. When we were on full Hook up, we would leave the valve to the tank closed so there was always water on the bottom. When it did get part way filled we would open the valve and empty it, add more water, and repeat.
That 4104 is a good looking bus.
I did the heads on a v8 in one about that age. The back head slides straight to you off the studs front or top head lifts up through a hatch under the back bench seat. 40 years ago it was fun😲
HA! A poo pyramid. Never heard of that one before but good to know there's a solution for it. I've liked what I heard some RVers call the drain hose... "the stinky slinky"
The 'corn hose'
LOL Glow plugs.. Bad crank.. Fill the tank completely... You need to...... The comments just keep getting better. Maybe I am wrong Scott but I imagine you have seen more, and fixed more of these problems in the last few years than most have in their entire life. Keep up the good work, and keep on educating us. Thanks for sharing it all with us...
No glow plugs on these. Just compression and quick turn over
I will be very interested to see what you find Scott, as you tear into this new project. But I know you will get it sorted whatever it takes.
I use the macerator pump you recommended last year for flushing the tanks on my rv. I am able to get the tanks much cleaner. Well worth the money.
I've been following you for a long time I love your lifestyle and your videos
Great video, thank you for sharing them with us.
yes scott i noiced from the sound of this vintage gm bus 4104 engine that it sounded like the engines was either skipping or missing so your the guy that can hear and til things and like you said yes only running on 7 cyclinders instead of the whole 8 but i know you will fix the problem and wow the bathroom toilet cleaning tool and the new part that you put in amazing to learn those important tips to make it less messing while cleaning it out and stuff great video scott for project day 1 vintage gm 4104 bus so until next video i say bye for now and take care from Randy from ontario, canada p.s stay safe out there and enjoy working on this 4104 vintage bus .
Really enjoyed the format of this video! Thanks as always
Classic country music here on the radio keeps me going
after little bit love from scott that engine its goint to work excellent.
Yep, reco head, injectors, new pistons & liners, crank bearings, fix wonky flywheel if possible or drop in another donk. BGM definitely needs the new covered shop and shop tools for these projects.
Amazing you own one of this . Great job!!🖒
I sounded like the starter relay was chattering...
I love the good old GMYS i am a old retired HD mechanic
Your engine diagnosis ability is beyond Spooky! They need to call you the " Diesel Whisperer" it is like you can talk to the things!
More like “the Detroit doctor”
Yes Scott please build that workshop soon, we are getting wet.
RE: loose flywheel bolts. Is that a common problem on these engines? I do love seeing these machines being brought back to life!
beautiful bus love it
Beautiful bus
The camera you are using is very clear👍
Even if it never runs looks like a helluva nice parking spot to me.
Even for a tired motor it still sounds good you may not like it but I like the sound of it hunting
Scott that wand you works fairly well ihave used them what i have found that works better is a wand that has a spinner on the bottom of it water pressure keeps it spinning as long as there is water running to saves you having to turn the wandthey are about ten bucks more than the one you have
She may be tired but she wants to live. Looking forward to the upcoming episodes of the in-frame to see what’s going on with her
good video, keep them coming
I don't know how you do what you do I just took on a project and it's winning lol not kidding
Not a bad bus, it might be a glow plugs problem. I would clean all those first. Engines like that compression wise last forever. I would also inspect the injectors and clean all of them also! The play on the fly wheel might be a thrust bearing..
First the flywheel is loose the other end has zero play. Second no glow plugs in a detroit diesel just compression
D'oh! Trade school small engine certificate hasn't ever heard of a 2 stroke. Good thing those glow plugs didn't get fouled. lol
You should start a business selling glow plugs for old detroits, you would make a fortune! I bet if you google it, there is no one out there selling glow plugs for these..... :D
@@DrinkWhiskeyRaiseHell A few of the military detroits did have glow plugs from what I was told.
Scotty! We need more power!
Last RV, due to design was prone to poo pyramid, solution was simply more water when flushing, pain as fresh needed filling more often but more pleasant than the pyramid🙄
The orange on this bus makes it look like it originally was from my hometown of Fitchburg, MA.
Now that’s a pry bar!
I really need that high pressure nozzle when that happens to me I use a old rake handle and just push it thru
Shes a hunter when shes cold. Sounds like our old worn out Mike Boat Detroit's!
I guess this doesn’t have the remote start in the back. Thank you for the video KY.
That bus is beautiful on the outside. Put a split unit in it and get rid of the ugly roof units would make it look nice a clean.
What’s your bus look like?
Word of advise: **Never** leave the black tank valve open. Open it to drain the tank when it gets full then close it again. If you leave it open, you will get the pyramid problem.
We have never left the bkack tank open ever.
You are correct Sir. Needs more electrons!!!!!!!!!!!! (Or in my way of thinking--more holes!)
It's six of one, half a dozen of the other. If you don't have enough electrons to fill those holes, it ain't gonna crank.
Put the battery higher to give the electrons a bit more pressure :)
I meant to tell you guys this awhile ago but you guys need a portable pooper on your land. They come every couple weeks to pump it out. It's inexpensive. That way you can keep your R/V tank cleen and ready to go if needed. Plus once you guys start a build you will need one anyway. I had one when i parked my trailer on a site for a year. One other option.. you could use the backhoe to dig a hole and build an outhouse over it. Use Lye and sawdust to break it down.. It's used in almost all other countries. You can't just use your onboard toilet if your not pumping it out on a regular few days use.
A full septic system is already on the property, up on top of the hill, where the permanent buildings will be.
Ah! It has the old Detroit roll at idle! Poor baby is just tired!
I had to do a loose flywheel repair on one of those engines in the 70's .But it only made a noise when on the overrun and at idle . Sounds like the solenoid is not contacting properly.
great shape though!
Poo + Paper = Concrete. Always add plenty of water with each flush. After emptying tank, flush it out good and add a few gallons back to the tank so your'e not starting "dry"
Leave the blank tank dump valve closed until you dump it. Also, they make a flushing wand with a whirly-gig on the end. That spinner can come off and get lodged in the drain valve.
It was closed. I don’t leave the sewer hose attached. .
I love the master blaster, my Dad always called that a swizzle stick!!!
Great videos keep it up
Never mind the engine now. The waste tank is the most important part to clean first. Then you can work on the engine.
Thanks
Sounds like starter was stuttering and not enough juice.
Exactly, solenoid was having a hard time staying engaged, low voltage. Also starter motor wasn't rolling to quick. I would check for resistance on the connections and load test Batteries.
That was painful to hear!
Maybe because the flywheel is getting ready to fall off.
Not enough juice?? Could be a dietary solution to the other problem Scott was talking about :D
Super!)))
That’s a lot of end play. Rebuild time
Not end play.
I wonder how low you can go with compression on a diesel. Old Alco 251 locomotive diesels would operate with as low as an 11.5:1 compression ratio, but I don't know what the compression pressure was with those. They also would take a while to wake up on colder days though...
It sounds just like my Prius
See you have some drainage pipes to go in the ground 👍🏻👍🏻
To septic tank
Yes culverts for the driveway
5:55 SHE'S ALIVEEEEEEE!!!!!
When you dump your waste tank, do you leave it totally empty it or leave 5 - 8 Gals of water in it and add lav blue to it (for smell)? In the airline industry, we would add and leave 4-6 gals of lav blue water in the dump tank after flushing it out so solids would not stick to the bottom of the tank. So, dump, flush, then add 4-6 gals in waste tank (and put lav blue packet in tank from toilet).
Simple green or vinegar works also 🤔
That's a nice looking bus.. too bad the engine is in a bad way.. but its in good hands now.. As far as the poo pyramid, look up the bio-geo method. It does work better if you can drive and agitate the tanks but I am sure it will help, plus its pretty simple to do.. just add dish detergent and borax.. borax makes the water break down the solids in the tank and the dish detergent is a surfactant, it suspends the solids and allows you to flush them out. There is a great video on here about it..
Also add a few bags of ice and drive it around the ics sloshing will help break things up
prob. will remain a dream
The lean green screeming machine
That's an attractive bus, I like the styling. Is the tired motor the worst part about the bus? Just for curiosity, how is the rest of the chassis and interior condition?
I am looking at the GMC Vintage "Day one of this 4194" ..really good shape considering its age... i sometimes think of creatinga mobile recording studio... (dream for now).. but can a decent coach be had relatively cheap?thanks so much and love your program ! Isaac
Make sure you keep black tank closed till full if connected.
Clearly you don’t understand what was happening. One side of tank blocked. ( uphill side ). Low side of tank 3/4 empty Shit dam under the toilet nothing flowing to the low side.
Ah, 4104...first model bus I ever drove.
What size culverts did you get to go under the driveway with storm water? Are you going to use a prefab or constructed ballast catch basin of any kind, or just a ditch to the pipe opening?
They look like 12in
So tomorrow's video will be you starting an in-frame rebuild?
holy giant prybar
Are you leaving your black tank valve closed?
when you put that pry bar on the flywheel was that before you repaired it or after if before you could have a broken crank or at least that is my opinion which aint much as im 81 tears old and i might be wrong
Sorry you might be doing this already but I hav been rving for years and if you leave your black water closed and dump once a week the solids won't separate from the liquid but like I said you might already be doing that but I live in mine and haven't had that problem
"I think I can, I think I can"
Cold stuck rings,either baby.
The way that thing struggled to roll over makes me think worn brushes if the starter motor has 4 brushes, only one winding is doing the work and it kills the battery.
I wouldn't mine having it myself...
You need to complete engine overhaul
you need you need you need
Put a few inches of water in the tank after dumping and fill the bowl with water some before doing your flush and you may find you do not have to do your jet work.
The tank is taller on the drain end. It would have to be 1/2 full to make a difference.
@@BusGreaseMonkey Ouch. Good thing you have your tool then.
Silly question do you have a diesel pump on your property or do you have to pull them things into a gas station somewhere
The eye of the storm unless you need lots of fuel daily or weekly, you’re better off buying fuel from a station. And best practice, from a station that sells a lot of fuel, like a truck-stop. Fresher the better.
Any particular reason that you don't have a clip on ignition switch that you can use from the engine bay? Seems painful to be running back and forth to the front or co opting a helper.
Stepping on the clutch to relieve as much friction as possible, remove all possible drag on the engine as it's being started. But yeah, not sure why no start control in the engine bay.
Bus grease monkey as a older mechanic with a lot of Detroit experience. If road equipment I enjoy your videos. Just wondering if you are interested in a 71 and also 53 series piston install sleeves.both are new condition very little use. If so we will connect
I do not have the 53 one, and tyler could probably use the 71
Im 1 minute in. And i see why the "newer" busses have controls to start them in the rear.
I’ve noticed most the coaches don’t have start controls in the rear, are they disabled or what? Also, hi idle. Is that disabled too?
Everything I ever drove had start controls in the engine compartment.
High idle, well if this unit has a high idle feature, Scott may not have bothered engaging it. I've had air-activated high idle controls on almost everything I drove that had a Detroit in it. The few that didn't, or the air actuator no longer functioned for whatever reason, had a screw-type throttle pedal actuator, or worst-case, a high-idle stick bought from a truck stop.
Somebody is going to get a big bill
But someone’s going to have a damn good bus when Scott’s done also that can take off coast to coast without praying.
Love the camera on a tripod setup. Still the iPhone or you using a go pro? Sorry I'm a few videos behind, maybe you mentioned it.
I Only use the iPhone
@@BusGreaseMonkey it's great!
Wifes name and pic. Mark here. Scott I feel your pain and I worked in Wastewater Treatment for 30 years. My Alpine Coach had that plug issues 2 years in a row on my Birthday. Basically a bad design. My plumber friend and I took out black tank, the inlet was only 2 inches off the bottom giving the solids nowhere to go quick. We put in bigger diameter inlet which now was now 5 inches to tank bottom. Thanks for videos .Peace
