That is a strong tractor! By the way, there is a product that will really help you out for that container with the Thing in it. It is called Damp Rid. It gets rid of the excess moisture and it comes in different sizes as well as a refillable one. I use it in my garage to keep the moisture in control so my Pontiac Chieftain stays nice and a small one inside the car as well. Good Luck putting the new engine in.

Detroit Diesels are extremely tough. The ones I worked on were in big air-compressors used to power drill rigs in rock quarries....nothing but dirt and dust. Ingersol-Rand actually had a very good air flow design through the whole box, such that the lion's share of the grit would precipitate down before it got to the engine compartment. The Donaldson dual dry canister filters (inner and outer) did a good job too. 1500 HR rebuilds were still the norm though. But I swear we had machines come in with just oil rings left intact and they would still run, even if just on a few cyclinders. The 855 Cummins engines that came later in the 1990's were strong engines but if they lost a cylinder they just were pretty much out of the game. So very cool to see you keeping these old engines alive.

Down here in NE Texas we call a dusted engine a sanded up engine. Did an in-frame on a Ford 335 industrial for that reason. Mouse chewed through a rubber transition hose from the steel tube leaving the air filter and to the intake manifold.Mouse was smart:low on the back side of the hose. Last place I would look.....

I worked at a plant where there was a roots blower that was used to vacuum up coke, and not the cola. The blower was not producing enough suction and the electric motor was not drawing as much amperage as it should have. The mechanics at the plant put new rotor seals and it didn't fix the problem. I am an electrician and told them I knew a fellow who bought a 6-71 blower and found the case was worn out and could not be rebuilt. They laughed at me saying the cases didn't have anything to do with it that the rotor seals determined the performance of the blower. They put it back together and it was only slightly better before, barely useable. Trying to explain that housings are also wear items was just not possible.

Hello Scott !! You did a real good job handling the Kubota with lifting that engine!! Your judgment was very wise with the lifting part in that you only lifted the engine high enough to safely move the engine where you wanted it put, What you did was a general rule of thumb in moving ANYTHING with a forklift ! In training classes they ALWAYS tell you this, Do not lift the load way high, ONLY HIGH ENOUGH to move the item safely! Of course when you are lifting the old engine out of the bus and putting the good running engine in you lift as high as needed to get the job done. Bravo to Scott and to Kelly too for spotting the move and help the way she did, BRAVO ------------- John Bellas KC2UVN 73's my friends!!

Scott - on your Kubota notice there are two holes where the boom cylinders mount to the stanchions. The upper hole is for height and the lower hole is for power. Your tractor had the cylinders mounted in the holes for max height, not max lift power. I’d also recommend using a little more RPM although I understand you were trying to keep it low for slow movement.

You can always tell what caliber of a mechanic that your working with in the repair of whatever your working on by how he troubleshoots and dissassembles what he’s working on. When he’s tearing things down, does he get in there and start ripping everything apart with no rhyme or reason and worry about picking up the nuts and bolts later or do they take a slow methodical/organized approach so they can inspect parts and find the actual cause of the problem or were they planning on just changing enough parts that it had to be fixed?
I’ll let you guys figure out if we have a real, hard to find (rare) mechanic here or do we have a typical parts changer? And what’s making the rare mechanic so rare is that the actually know how to troubleshoot and yes there is a right way and a wrong way.

I was only there for a few hours. It had way more serious issues than me checking the air filters. Kinda like checking someone for gingivitis in the ER before dealing with the gunshot wound they came in for. It was a running driving bus. I always check them prior to starting if they have been sitting for sure. Basic maintenance first on a serious diagnosis isn’t really practical. But yes they have been empty for years i suspect. Zero oily residue a charred bone dry interior.

I would spend an hour and $10 in paint and sand the rust and dirt off the radiator and paint it.

You could drive the old one on into the ground, thus putting that many fewer miles on the new one. but why was the old one down a cylinder? was compression escaping through the cracks?

Did you see the cylinder walls in that cylinder? A couple videos ago??

@@BusGreaseMonkey No, but those are easily replaced aren't they? especially with a well used one to match the other 5.

@@BusGreaseMonkey I have now. Why didn't the rings remove that rust while driving to your land? Is the rust down inside pits? or did it form since arriving? where is the water coming from? Should I assume that much blowby will cause a failure to ignite even on the highway?

Is the old engine and trans salvageable? Maybe not fixable but is every piece on them trashed? Shame to lose that old engine if another 4104 comes through.
