I am just back from 2 weeks on Marella Voyager in the Caribbean, got to say we had a fantastic time. Highlights for me was the staff, the staff and the staff. Fantastic. They are AI cruises, so no worries about drinks and plenty of bars and staff to serve you. The food was excellent no need to splash out on speciality but we did use surf and turf and this was fantastic. My experience was one of fun and joy. We did see Arvia in St Martens and it looks massive. I was on Azura last summer for a cheapy and couldn't complained for what I paid but nothing flash, food average at best. marella is more relaxed, shorts allowed in dining rooms, no drama there, but on dressy up nights plenty made the effort. I spoke to plenty of P&O converts also on this cruise. I have done about 7 with P&O and 5 with marella now. I like the smaller ships better and getting beds isn't a massive hassle even on a sea day. It was interesting to see our wonderful captain had been with P&O for long while up until last year, wonder why he left? We are going on Arvia in 3 weeks for a transatlantic, again because it was a bargain and life is to short. So we will see what all the fuss is about, I am not that hard to please. I will not take the drinks package as my liver needs a rest after my Voyager adventure. Change is hard in this business, but core values need respect, and there was nothing but respect between cruisers and all staff. Not sure about P&O thinking celebrity names will make any difference to customers enjoyment etc. Captain did daily rounds most days with no one berating him, just smiles. It's a long time since I have left a cruise and had a tear in my eye with great memories. as its tui we had a lovely dreamliner there and back.

People are paying keg beer prices but have vintage champagne expectations. Azura 7 day fly cruises out of Tenerife start at around £550 so you aren’t going to get the same quality or level of service as on a line like Royal Caribbean (where after all hidden extras you pay at least double). Having gone for the mass market so determinedly there’s not a lot they can do about an ever larger minority of boorish louts who are increasingly spoiling the cruise experience ( I certainly experienced that on Arvia, which was otherwise really beautiful). Personally I prefer Cunard all the way. It’s probably half as much again price wise but worth every penny.

We've been on 5 of the P&O fleet & my favourite is Aurora. I love the art deco features & it looks like an ocean liner, not a container ship with windows. Cabins on Iona are excellent, although I would avoid Deck 8 - applies equally to Arvia. We've been happy with the MDR food across all of the ships we've been on, but the virtual queue for the MDR on the App has recently been removed except on the 3 largest ships - not happy about that.

I agree with people's gripes about the Arvia buffet. The bit that opened at 10pm every night had huge queues and little choice. To add insult to injury our cabin was directly under the buffet food prep area - so was REALLY noisy until 2am - starting up again at around 5am in the morning. October 23 Greek cruise from Malta. Balcony cabin which was fine, but pretty much everything else was poor… MDR service and food great if you want to lose weight and shows bland. The buffet is dire - Norwegian, Cunard and even MSc were in a different league for the buffet. Interesting. I am considering going on a cruise and I used to fancy Arcadia because a smaller more intimate ship. However due to the health issues which I think is partly due to the maintenance issues I recently have been looking at Aurora as first choice.
I look at these large ships that have become a trend and they horrify me. I mean how many facilities do you need on a week or two week cruise? All those people and yes the more people the more you are likely to deal with rude and obnoxious passengers. They seem far too brash and noisy for my taste.
I have nothing against children, in fact I wouldn't mind a smaller ship with kids as more likely the parents would be made to make sure their children are under control. I don't blame the children, they are on holiday and get excited. I blame selfish people who don't seem to care about others enjoying their cruise too. I understood the Butlin's comment. Fellow passengers can make a big difference to your holiday.
So it is a shame really I may have to consider an adult only ship as I do like watching kids enjoying themselves. I just don't want obnoxious families spoiling my holiday. Sadly a sign of the times when people would need a code of conduct when it should be a natural part of consideration and respect for others.
It is nice to see an older more respectable sized ship came top.
These mega sized ones to me are not conducive to a relaxing holiday. No thanks, big is not always best.
With the towels on sunbeds situation a decent ship will stop sunbed hogging. They don't need more sunbeds, just systems in place to deal with selfish people.

I just recently returned from an Arvia Cruise and agree with the likes/dislikes but I would say that I also found the entertainment to be poor on our cruise and service was very hit or miss, poor in the included venues and generally good in the pay extra venues. Keel & Cow on our cruise had the best service and quality of food but you had to pay extra for this. As first time cruisers, it didn't put us off cruising (booked another with Princess a couple of days after we got back) but we wont be booking with P&O again. We travelled with my Parents who had cruised with P&O many times over the last 20 years but have had a little break in the last few years and they were shocked by the changes for the worse in quality, service and entertainment onboard P&O.

We tried Iona, found the food bland, cold and very mediocre, broccoli with everything , every night!! And I don't want to eat my extra pay food in a corridor in a masssive atrium, as people walk by and stare at you. And you have to listen to whatever is going on below you..absolutely horrible. The atrium was freezing (it was winter) when we were in port as the main entrance was intothe bloody atrium. The poor young girl "playing music" in the club was 23, and had no idea what Motown was, or party music, everyone was sat bored, until I asked if I could load a party mix onto her computer system and got eveyone on the floor. Drinks are weak, and they wont make a cocktail unless its one of the 5 they have left on the menu..It was awful. The demograpic of the passengers have changed due to the cheap prices..If you want to cruise on an old persons home try Arcadia!! Don't try it if you are under 55. But we did enjoy Britannia..but the MDR is like eating in a motorway services..crazy bright LED lights rather than nice lighting to dine by. Aurora is a lovely classic ship. (like her sister the wondeful and much missed Oriana).

@mariasharp2334 Oriana was really special, she was modern (then) but still classy. Aurora is very close and sails well. We did a Transatlantic on her in September 2001. (Yep!..got to NYC on Sept 9th!). The show team and cruise directors were brilliant. The food was excellent, with a big Stilton fed with port, brought to the table and scooped out fresh each evening, and truffles or little petit fours served with the coffee..And Mouton Brown toiletries in all grades of cabin. It was special. I suppose the nearest to it now is Cunard. Happy Cruising.

Last cruise Nov 2023, Ventura. Very poor! Entertainment reduced greatly in daytime and below average at nightime. Food abysmal in MDR - no salmon alternative, choice greatly reduced and desserts terrible! Buffet horrendous - tough meat, lack of vegetables. No local dishes when at destinations. Desserts awful here too. I've had better school dinners and food at Butlins! Service very slow and staff obviously very unhappy everywhere - wondered if smiling and chatting to guests was banned. Witnessed staff bullying other staff on more than one occasion. System for seating guests in MDR needs changing as current system causes unnecessary delays. "App" useless. Disorganised queuing to board - outside in cold wet weather and inside empty. Came across many more rude, entitled passengers than ever before. Oh dear- sort yourself out P&O. I might try another line next time.

Great review, I was hoping to sail on Arvia next Winter but I’ll pass until they have changed carrier.
Azura is a good ship but definitely needs a lot of work as the maintenance is lacking.
Overall, I think P&O need some serious help from Carnival as it’s a brand that’s seriously lacking.

Yes although not confirmed I think P&O know Maleth was mistake can’t see them returning next winter. Think I will wait to try Azura until after 2025 refit, although as mentioned the refits are very short!

Haha very dependant on who you sail with and the time of year, this cruise for example was a very different calibre of people in some areas 🤷‍♀️ however if you can over look that and just remember the price paid (much cheaper) then it’s still enjoyable. Thanks for watching.
