Excellent detail as always and agree, P&O pricing is very competitive. Always consider how much on board spending will cover in terms of drinks before going for the package!

Thanks for a very informative video, totally agree that it is a personal decision as to whether it's economically viable. For us it's less about the cost than the convenience and flexibility - as a predominately lager drinker I do like to try different things like wine and cocktails, not having to worry about waste if I don't like it is great. It can also depend on the itinerary, we often take a cruise just to enjoy the ship as a floating hotel and don't bother much with the ports so we tend to have long lunches and a few drinks during the day. It also means I don't have to scrutinise the onboard account and make the inevitable trip to reception for incorrect charges. Would be interesting to know if it would be different without the kids, people do tend to drink more moderately when they have youngsters to look after.
Hi Gazza. Thanks for your detailed comment and watching our video. Agree with all you say especially the fact you can’t say if it’s worth it just present the facts. Great point on the places your visiting and if your getting off regularly, those long lunches sound great. I tend to mix it up when I have the package, sometimes it’s not a great thing! Thanks again. I agree with you, we had a drink package the first time and struggled to drink enough, but we gave it ago. Since then we take the wine package and buy other drinks onboard. This works for us.
As opposed to previous cruises, our last cruise was terrible for being able to get a drink. Won’t buy a drinks package, after our last experience we wouldn’t get our money’s worth. Very informative thank you!
Great video Tom! Very well presented and informative! We never get the drinks package anymore. We always enjoy finding local bars and restaurants when we are off the ship and spending our money to support the local economy 👍😀😊
It is a difficult choice. We have sailed on several cruise lines and from a drinks point of view we do like to know what we are spending. We do like the Marella approach where the basic drinks are included - they dont include on board spend. If there is on board spend I would be inclined to pay as you go as you did on P&O. The best drinks package we paid for was on Princess last September on a cruise to USA/Canada and back. That included WIFI and gratuities as well, it was an offer reduced from £50 to £40 per person per day. With plenty of sea days it was a no brainer.
Wow yes that’s definitely a no brainier!! As we have said in other vlogs regarding drinks packages some cruise lines it just makes sense to get one esp when cocktails come in at £15!!! You just spend all your time thinking nope that’s too much, the advantage to paying before is you don’t have that worry and I think In some cases may relax more 🤷♀️. Thank you for watching 😊

Great video guys, very detailed as always! We’re not sure who they are either but we thought it looked good lol, no but thank you again the med looked beautiful. 💯 p&o is very reasonable for price, but many other lines we do like the package. As always thanks for watching 😊
@cruisingwiththe4bs we go next year on Arvia and be getting the deluxe drinks package after watching this vid. Think the rum I like is 7.95 for double so be worth it.
Never bought a drinks package. I prefer to remember my holiday. You would have to have a drink every 20 minutes to get your moneys worth. Good vlog, thank you.
We worked out that 8 drinks per day each is the sweet spot, If you drink 8 or more, then the drinks package is worth it otherwise it isn't. Except for P and O where they are too strict on wine measures and frequency of orders.
For me it’s the convenience of not having to worry about what I’m spending whilst on board , food and drink then all paid for. Can just step on and enjoy
Hi Jackie. Thanks for watching and commenting. 💯 the package is not for you haha, to be fair I could live on tea and water for a week…well maybe the odd beer
Great video & packed full of information and the principles can be applied to most cruise lines although P&Os bar prices are the cheapest we have seen and was a nice surprise when we sailed at Christmas. We definitely saved money paying as we went but only one of us really drinks (John 👀). We have been so used to always having a drinks package as part of the booking incentive or in Yacht Club that Arvia was the first time we had to really think about it. We decided to pay as we went and didn’t regret it. We did alter our behaviour a bit, only picked the drinks we knew we liked rather than experimenting and trying out every cocktail (usually wasting a lot). We also got a bottle of wine with dinner, and would fill our glasses and take to the next venue. I would then have a coffee and John pints but we had enough to drink and had as much as we wanted. I feel if we had the drinks package we may be more annoyed with how slow it was to get a drink sometimes, especially in the Club House but on pay as you go you save money and sometimes skip that last drink you didn’t really need 😂
@@cruisefraterpoultons hey both thanks for watching and your excellent detailed reply. I totally agree on the waste we do that a lot in my view when on the package. Having the drinks package in yacht club is such a plus! I think at some point in future will get the package just to compare, still think pay as you go will be the way forward!
Thanks so much very informative am doing my 1st cruise this summer on Arvia and this is the main question we’re all asking ourselves about wether it’s worth getting a drinks package or not ❤❤❤
We did repositioning on Arvia in March and on the 4 port days in the Caribbean we bought local rum as presents for back home, fully expecting them to be held until disembarkation, but no one ever took the slightest interest. As for the package, unless you drink like Oliver Reed, I wouldn’t bother. Firstly the cost of drinks is really good value (cheaper than prices in most major UK cities) and secondly even for ‘party types’ 14 days of heavy drinking gets really exhausting. At the beginning when the holiday mood was novel we were definitely hammering the bars, but by the end of the fortnight we had eased right back. That being said, we never stinted on speciality coffees, wine, beer and cocktails (including the delicious more expensive rum cocktails which weren’t included as part of the package)and our final bill was still substantially less than 14 days x 2 would have been ( the package would have been £1200 and our bill was £875).
Hi Gerard thank-you for your detailed response. Yes it seems p&o take a blind eye to it at the moment which is great. 💯 agree on the drinks, over two weeks you would be really hard pushed to get value and then would you be drinking for the sake of it? Thanks again
@@cruisingwiththe4bs pleasure I enjoy your videos (chiefly because you set out to enjoy yourselves rather than to moan about trivia). Keep up the good work 👍
We disembarked from Arvia yesterday after a fantastic 2 week holiday. We knew the drinks package was not for us before we left. We drank what we wanted, when we wanted and spent £355 on alcohol ... I was shocked it was that much but as I had a pint at every quiz in Brodies, that cost me just shy of £100. 😮 We've booked the Transatlantic on Arvia in Oct 2024 and that has £580 in room credit ... so we'll easily have enough to cover our drinks over the 15 days.
Hi Andrew thanks for watching and such a detailed comment. Yes like us drinks package just doesn’t add up mainly due to good prices at the bar. Loved the syndicate quiz. Transatlantic is on wish list at some point.
We were doing this exact maths last night and I can’t make the drinks package work although I do get that some people get it for peace of mind. We have some OBC when we sail next week so that will be used for drinks. We had no problem in the Canaries and Madeira bringing additional alcohol onboard Azura in February which was a bonus. You really made the right choice in not going for it and bringing all those soft drinks was a great idea.
@@wellerjam I think that on sea days with speciality coffees and soft drinks followed by some booze in the evenings it’s probably worth it but on port days I can’t see the value at all.
Thanks for the info We have worked out that we couldn't drink that much so we won't buy the drinks package We also get 10% discount on drinks with our loyalty level also as you said wouldn't be buying drinks when ashore We have sailed with P&O 35 times
Great informative video. As Lin and I are not drinkers ( unlike you Tom *joke ) we buy as we go. I normally take a bottle of wine on board and I have a glass of wine with my evening meal and Lin will have only a couple of glasses on a two week cruise. I did notice that some passengers order a drink then leave nearly a full glass and it seems such a waste. When we were on MSC there was a lot of passengers who were so drunk and there was a lady near us on the sunbed who had far too much to drink and wet herself and urinated all over her sunbed and continued all the way into the ship with her equally drunk companions. All the best.
Hey how we doing, thanks for watching. 🤣🤣 I would like to add when at home I barely drink 😁 I agree on drinks package it can lead to waste, on other lines we have had the package just down to cost but do drink sometimes for sake of it, I rarely drink a cocktail but do when I have packages. Some of sights you see, unbelievable. Have a great day
That's very useful for us thanks, I hadn't considered taking drinks onboard with us. We will probably go for the refresh package, and treat ourselves to the odd beer here and there. None of us are big drinkers. (I usually take those little concentrated squash bottles to drink whilst in the cabin. )
Thanks for watching Gaynor, we took so many soft drinks on and as we had a bigger cabin had plenty of space to store it all, we love the little squeezy bottles although Ernest gets through them a tad to quick lol. When are you heading on?
@@cruisingwiththe4bs Big family trip in the autumn. ( Emma will shoot me if I mention dates!) I am very much looking forward to it, and will watch all your videos with interest!
Thanks for the information. With the total you spent does that include soft drinks and what the kids spend on soft drinks. To compare with or without the package these need to be considered?
Hi thanks for watching. Yes that includes the kids drinks. We also took onboard the Minature squeeze juice bottles to add to water when in bars to save money, hope this helps
We did indeed, the costings at the end of the video are inclusive of the kids free (we have put that in 🙂) I’d say we spent £100 if that on drinks for the kids over two weeks as we took lots of soft drinks onboard.
I wish you could purchase the odd day here and there during your cruise, depending on how you felt. I think I’d drink more on sea days v days we were in Port!
Yes that would be an ideal world! We drank quite a bit to be fair and had alcohol everyday of those 14, plus bottles of wine and still got nowhere near the price we would have paid.
I found that the rules around what we could drink, how often we could order a drink, and the smaller amount of wine per glass at meal times made the drink package inappropriate for us. After being told that I had to wait another 8 minutes for a second whiskey on my first day aboard Brittania, I called the bar management and asked to be taken off the package. All in all it cost me about £300 more for the fortnight, but ai had a better experience for paying as I went. I have had dr8nks packages on princess, ncl, H and A and msc and they have been excellent. P and O drink package doesn't suit everyone. Horses for Courses
Hi Paul thanks for watching and commenting. Think you have summed it up perfectly it’s all the silly rules, you just want to get a drink not spend 10 minutes working out what’s included and what’s not!

Thank you very much for popping this on I’m sure it will help many people 🙂. When we did royal we did the same to see what we would have spent and it was £600 over what we paid for package 😂Thanks for watching.
@cruisingwiththe4bs yes must admit we went to town for us and drank sometimes for the sake of it, I reckon we would spend half that on a normal cruise.
Hi Kim as always thanks for watching and commenting. We did certainly put this in our costings, it wasn’t massive as all items were Aldi own makes 🤣. Have great day
Say i paid for the classic package for the wife and I is there a limit as to how many drinks we would be allowed ? l love a pint when i`m on holiday and once i get the taste for it that`s me . I don`t mean that i would be falling about the place or punching the wifes lights out or anything . I would just like to know exactly what i am getting for my money before buying said package. This will be my first cruise ever and it`s a toss up between Arivia or going back to Cuba but my wife hates long haul flights .
Hi Mikey thanks for watching and commenting. I completely understand what you mean, so the limit has only recently been enforced, but it’s now 15 alcohol drinks per day, it automatically comes up on the system. Go on give the cruise a go…
Hi, Do you have a price list that includes Punk IPA on draught? Just wondering if that is Classic or Delux package. Top of the beer price list appears to say all included in C and D.
All IPAs and craft beers are in the deluxe package non included in the classic 😊. Thank you for watching. I have a pic of what’s included in each package but can’t add it on to a comment 🙂
I would describe myself as a big drinker (beer, spirits and occasional cocktail), my wife much less so. Neither of us drink coffee so the Costa part wouldn't be of interest. Have never bought the drinks package on any ship and have never had a drinks bill anywhere near what the packages would cost.
No exactly, the only time we do regret or try and get a package is with MSC as the drinks are much more expensive and with two kids soon rack up!! It’s very dependant on the price of the package for us. Thank you for watching 🙂
I think we can rather simplify the maths here. For you, an adults’ drink package would include a child’s drink package, and would cost £40 or £50 per day, depending on whether you opt for premium. If we reckon on £5 per adult drink and £3 per child drink, this would be £8 for adult and child. So you would break even on the £40 package if you average more than 5 drinks per day. To break even on the premium, you would need to average at least 7 drinks per day. We don’t have children, so would need to each have 8 or 10 drinks respectively per day to make it worthwhile!
I got a easy drinks package on MSC virtuosa in March - £204 per person. Included all drinks up to £9.50 ( including speciality coffees and most cocktails) we loved the freedom and peace of mind having the package but on day four we both had a sickness bug and that lasted until we left on day 7 so didn't make the most of it unfortunately....
Definitely worth it on MSC ships we always get one with them you would have saved money even only with 4 days worth I expect as drinks are pricey. Sorry you were Ill, thanks for watching 🙂
Thanks for this very informative video. We must say we never get a drinks package, we drink what we want when we want it even bottles of wine at dinner, cocktails, beers, spirits & speciality coffees. Very rarely do we bring drinks on board unless bought as presents and we don't have an extortionate bar bill, we shall continue to do what we do as there's no way we would get through £1500 worth of drinks in 2 weeks my liver would explode😨🤣
Hi guys. Just a quick question, me and my wife both have the drinks package but what I wanted to know was, when ordering drinks at the bar can I also get my wife's drink with mine on my card or do I have to use both cards?
Hi Mark, we didn’t have the drinks package but I’m pretty sure you can order two drinks at a time as they will see from your card how many are in the cabin, just check when you get onboard you will soon know 🙂
Can’t understand why you didn’t mention you can have a bottle of spirits sent to your cabin but must be consumed in the cabin incredible value duty free price
Hi, no we didn’t buy any package for the kids, just tools lots of soft drinks onboard and brought them drinks with dinner etc. soft drinks are a very reasonable price.

Hi Katie, we’ll I can safely say we drank enough!! Had we had the package perhaps a little more but I’m not sure how much of the holiday I’d have remembered 😂
I never buy a drinks package - for you to ‘save’ that amount of money I can only assume you were having many many drinks every night which is not what an average drinker does…if you were having 2 alcoholic drinks a night you would be £100s worse off.
Thanks for the comment Gary, being average drinkers we were having a couple of glasses of wine or beer, some nights a couple of cocktails. This also takes into account children’s drinks and the fact we took so much onboard with us, what’s the saying ‘never assume’ 🙂 thank you for watching.
Nope that included everything they had, so normally a soft drink with dinner and a mocktail a day. But the fact we took lots on yes they had that but those drinks cost us less than £20 to take on (soft drinks). We did also have toms mum onboard so that included many drinks brought for her and she did buy for us but still a big saving for us. And also is a true reflection as you can take unlimited, sorry keep editing this text lol

Thanks for the post, very helpful as we board Arvia in 2 weeks! We also have kids (8 & 11). Question - can they come and go to the kids clubs as they feel, or is it a time slot booking booked in advance?
Thanks for watching. Kids club you have to book into time slots open at 8.30am the day before. Our 8 year old didn’t go once as there were so many kids we couldn’t get in!! @@cruisingwiththe4bsas it’s our first time cruising, is the ship conducive for kids to do their own thing (outside of the kids clubs)? And how did you stay in touch or find them on such a big ship?
@@andrewrichmond7483 hmmm unless you buy the WiFi package no way of staying in touch. My two are quite happy being with us, they ended up doing quizzes with us and just the pool. Also a cinema. Last cruise my wife and i were on we bought 95ish drinks each over a 10 day cruise this was a mixture of wine, beer. Cocktails, spirits soft drinks & coffees & water. Cost of package for 2 was less than £800 if we had purchased them separately the cost was about £1400/1500 so Def worth it for us and lots of passengers were drinking way more than us.
Ooh you’re so great 💋
Went round Greek islands 3 weeks ago.. had 5 coke zero’s 1 pina colada and 1 small glass of red. Rest was tea, coffee and water
Done both and I prefer having a package as I know what I've spent, when I've payg it would roughly workout the same anyway.
@@korma9732 yes definitely having not to worry knowing you have already paid is big plus. Thanks for watching
Thanks so much very informative am doing my 1st cruise this summer on Arvia and this is the main question we’re all asking ourselves about wether it’s worth getting a drinks package or not ❤❤❤
Ah thank you, hope it helped you to make a decision, have a fab cruise ☺️
Hi interesting comparison,I like champagne we’re did that fit in your package deals please
Hi for champagne it’s 20% off with package but included is presseco. Thanks

Thanks for the info you’ve made us decide we don’t need the drinks package we appear to drink roughly the same amounts 😉👍
Glad you enjoyed it thank you for watching, take onboard what you can is all we say lol
Thanks for the video Tom. Is the one litre of spirits per cabin or per adult ?
Hey Fred thanks for watching and commenting. Per person buddy.
We've booked the Transatlantic on Arvia in Oct 2024 and that has £580 in room credit ... so we'll easily have enough to cover our drinks over the 15 days.
Hi Andrew thanks for watching and such a detailed comment.
Yes like us drinks package just doesn’t add up mainly due to good prices at the bar. Loved the syndicate quiz.
Transatlantic is on wish list at some point.
I did pay as you go on Iona a couple of years ago and was way under the cost of a drinks package and like you I like a drink. Interesting to see! 👍🏻🍻
Thank you for watching 🙂 with the allowance and low cost drinks prices just doesn’t seem worth getting the package to us.

Hey apologise for delayed reply. Agree bringing on half way through really helps!

Thanks for the info We have worked out that we couldn't drink that much so we won't buy the drinks package We also get 10% discount on drinks with our loyalty level also as you said wouldn't be buying drinks when ashore We have sailed with P&O 35 times
Hi Patricia, thanks for watching, glad the vlog helped you to work this out have an amazing cruise, 35 times wow!!
🤣🤣 I would like to add when at home I barely drink 😁
I agree on drinks package it can lead to waste, on other lines we have had the package just down to cost but do drink sometimes for sake of it, I rarely drink a cocktail but do when I have packages.

With the total you spent does that include soft drinks and what the kids spend on soft drinks.
To compare with or without the package these need to be considered?
Hi thanks for watching. Yes that includes the kids drinks.
We also took onboard the Minature squeeze juice bottles to add to water when in bars to save money, hope this helps
@@cruisingwiththe4bs great thanks for quick reply.
Did you take into consideration the free refresher packages for the children when calculating the cost.

Tom, did you include the cost of all the soft drinks you took on board in your in your total spend?
Hi Kim as always thanks for watching and commenting. We did certainly put this in our costings, it wasn’t massive as all items were Aldi own makes 🤣. Have great day
On the Deluxe package, does a double count as one or two drinks?
Hi thanks for watching. Pretty sure it counts as one. Have great cruise
Do you pay as you go for the drinks, or do they get added on a cabin tab which you pay at the end of your holiday?
Hi thanks for watching. Yes tap cruise card, bill at the end which is taken off your registered card a few days later

Are the packages limited to one of each drink per day? Confused
Hi Andy thanks for watching and commenting with your detailed reply. I totally agree with you assessment.

Did the £800 include what your children had, or did they use just the drinks you brought on with you. Maybe not a true reflection?
Nope that included everything they had, so normally a soft drink with dinner and a mocktail a day. But the fact we took lots on yes they had that but those drinks cost us less than £20 to take on (soft drinks). We did also have toms mum onboard so that included many drinks brought for her and she did buy for us but still a big saving for us.
