I saw flake saying at a documentary (maybe IN AMERIKA) thay they used to have prohibited american songs on tapes, that weren't allowed at east germany... I'm quite positive that this song is about this topic
Interesting! I think that definitely was one of the main inspirations for this one, also because it's probably sort of a 'shared experience' by all members.
The video setting is clearly in the 30's. People heard BBC to avoid Nazi propaganda.

I do not think that this is the primary thing - The fact is that german radio never played Rammstein songs ever at the daytime, they said that it is not suitable for the youth - but sometimes at night like in the song said, the radio stations played Rammstein songs - "Every Night for 1 or 2 hours" - that was the case! The Band itselft formed after the fall of the Berlin wall - so they never could be played on a GDR radio station - I think with this song they are pointing on the radio stations in complete germany and the GDR is no issue! In the late 90s when I go out for party I always was pleasantly surprised when a Rammstein song suddenly sounded at 3-4 o'clock at night.
Even when the track titles were announced, I kind of assumed it would be about the life in East-Germany and the radio being a great form of entertainment, as well as the western music/entertainment not being allowed.
It's not about East Germany it's about EU dictatorship,see later part of the video,and open your eyes.

it's very obviously a song about the young generation in eastern germany listening to west german radio behind their parents' and the government's back.
Rammstein is a band formed in the DDR, they grew up there so the theme fits their personal backgrounds.
But in the music video it clearly shows "nazi flags" as European Union flags. Propably being hint to Article 13.
Like you're interpretations very much but in my opinion these lyrics refer from beginning to end to the heritage of Rammstein, which is the former GDR. The music and TV from the other side of the wall was forbidden. With the world receiver you were able to hear music and news from the "the west". Not only West Germany but also England and USA.
Definitely fits, I tackled that in a more general way though (cold war, former GDR, 'foreign songs'), that's true. :)
I agree with this post, but would like to add that the Nazis banned music and art as well. So Germany (particularly that entity called East Germany) banned certain types of music and art for like 50 years.
It has nothing to do with DDR.It clearly makes EU flags red ONE,clearly suggesting EU dictatorship and communist caracter.

Most of them were born on Eastern Germany, they experienced what really was like to live behind the iron curtain you can see they implanted those experiences in this song, it has to many levels about what censorship is.
I grew up in the 80’s and mtv was still new and no internet, so most of our music by tapes, records and most the radio. You had to have money to get tapes and to find unique music and where to get it, if you didn’t you were stuck with what was on the radio and popular at the time. Once again, Großartige Arbeit!

Thanks for the translations, man. I noticed that the band, particularly Till and Flake, look like Dadaist (1915-1920) performers - Hugo Ball in particular. German No Wave artist Klaus Nomi also also adopted that look. There seems to be a lot about German heritage on the new CD, and Dada is part of that heritage.

Quick correction: Stille heimlich fernes Weh is understood and translated wrongly. In this case, 'stille' is not the noun 'silence' but rather the verb 'to nurture/satisfy'. So it should be 'Satisfying secretly' not 'Secret Silence'
Radio Free Europe. I believe that the entire band were born and raised in East Germany. Listening to this was very dangerous

This very relatable for folks born before 2000. I grew up in the 90's and so many memories of listening to the radio! Taping songs off the radio. Part of my Childhood
Thanks Jan. I own a shortwave receiver myself. This brings back memories. Back in my university days I used to spend many sleepless nights scouring the airwaves for anything interesting. If I was born 30 years earlier some of the contents I listened to would have landed me in jail.

In my opinion the whole song is about their (the bands) youth, so more likely late 60s into 70s. TBH I don't know much about them but as far as I know they all were born in the German Democratic Republic. And GDR citizens were not allowed to watch western television or listen to western radio stations. But western Germany always spread their western programs through the ether as far into the east as possible, so many eastern germans were able but not allowed to receive said programs. And many of them did actually watch and listen to western programs but had to be very cautious about it since if the Stasi (german intelligence / secret police) caught you doing so you could end up in prison.
They beautifully describe how your ears can become your eyes when listening to stories about foreign countries and your mind starts painting a picture in your head/imagination.
So I can clearly imagine a little Till Lindemann lying on his bed every day and listening to western radio but also being forced to keep the radio quiet and only quietly sing the songs into his own hands so the neighbors (potential Stasi members) wouldn't hear/catch him doing so.
These guys are true artists. Love the Weimar and thirties imagery in their vids. True inheritors of Bauhaus,which never died in the arts.

You made an error in translation: "Stille heimlich fernes weh" Stille is meant as in breastfeeding, or simply "reducing": "ich stille den hunger". My point is made even mode as when that line is said, a woman is seen breastfeeding a radio in the music video.
Stillen is more satisfy than reducing. Like Neugier stillen (satisfy curosity). Baby stillen is to satisfy the hunger of the baby.

However, I mostly needed a commentatory type of a video on the song because I was confused as to why would they make a song about radio today, as it and the TV are being/ have been overthrown by the internet. But when you said that this might be a song about their personal experience, I think I get it more now. Idk I was more expecting of a song about the internet and smartphones and how they could potentially be harmful or how we could use them for better. I'm not a lawyer, but I do work in the legal field. I suppose I might not be the first to ask this, but, why exactly does "copyright" prevent you from featuring snippets of song audio?
Are you referring to copyright laws from outside the United States? I know that in Anerican copyright law, "fair use" is quite literally within a content producer's rights when they're discussing and referencing and interpreting and commenting upon a copyrighted work.
An inability to play relevant slices of audio and lyrics, I would think, is legally indistinguishable from quoting the lyrics in your own voice, or showing video clips from their official music video -- the lyrics, the title itself, the band name itself, and their visual likenesses in costume and staged performance, those are all equally protected under copyright as their audio. What makes it ok to play video clips with no audio, or to verbally quote and interpret their lyrics, it's ok to feature *all of that copyrighted material* but somehow the copyright on the audio portion is a special exception?

They said in an interview that they were not allowed to have music as a career or job or they could be arrested. They had to prove real jobs and do their music on their own time. I respect them. It's no wonder they are so controversial and provocative. The video is incredible. Only a man as macho as Till can pull off that look and still look sexy🔥. I love this band. An English equivalent to “Das Liedgut” would be traditional folk music or Celtic folk music or more affectionately “pub songs” as these are songs and artists specific to British and Irish cultures, songs such as the partying glass or mountain thyme
I'm not sure about that. I think das Liedgut is more like well-known and culturally established classics: Bach, Beethoven, Handel, etc.

Did you switch the audio channels while recording this video? I heard your voice fine in the first part and somewhere in the middle but the vast majority of this video there was no speaking in? I only have a single speaker hooked up to my tablet so anything recorded in stereo that isn't to both channels I just don't have the capacity to hear due to my current limitations. I highly recommend recording voice audio to both channels instead of just one as I'm sure I'm not the only person out there who has this limiting issue
This song reminds me of the cover of their first live album.
I took the song to be at least partially about the Swing Youth in WWII. I think overall it's a mix of all these ideas but there are some lines that make more sense when viewed as the swing youth
Two things:
1. "Ich lass' mich in den Äther saugen" = (correct translation) "I get sucked into the Ether". The correct translation works in English so there is no need to substitute Ether for Airwaves.
2. "Weltempfaenger". Although "World Receiver" is the direct translation the actual equivalent in English would be a "Shortwave Reciever"

@@Daveinitely The point is that the Radio Spectrum is often referred as "The Ether" i.e. radio operators would say something like "I pulled a weak signal out of the Ether" or a shortwave (kurzwelle) listner would say "I heard a weak station in the Ether". Also "Ether" gives a ghostly otherworld description to that strange kurzwelle radio landscape. In other words Ether is historically a correct vernacular in radio terminology in both English & German. Airwaves doesn't convey the same meaning.
The song is about GDR and it has a lot of meaning in this context, the iron curtain.
Fantastic translation. I feel maybe they're talking about "Radio Free Europe ". As an American Soldier I was stationed in Germany from 2003-2006. Mein Frau is from Bayern, also from you and her, Rammstein is from East Germany?
