Nice to meet you again, ladies! This music video was the first pre-release from their 8th studio album "Endless Forms Most Beautiful" (2015) - their first album recorded with Floor Jansen. Nightwish recorded few music videos, 1 or 2 for the promotion of each album, so you will find about a dozen recorded in total so far, in more than a quarter of a century of activity, most of their recordings being live, in concerts. But the beautiful part of these music videos is that they capture moments from the band's history, presenting the members from that moment, and the video presentation is different every time, using a diverse palette of means of artistic expression.
This is a beautiful video. All of the people appearing in it are top of the list Finnish movie stars from the past. Their vieos usually carry deep meanings and are well worth the watch. Amaranth is with Annette, but wow is it beautiful. You need to see Noise and Shoemaker, both heart thumpers. Shoemaker is about Eugene Shoemaker, an American NASA genius who taught the moon walkers geology and how to find the rocks they were seeking. He died an untimely death in a car accident, and his ashes were sent to the moon to honor his achievements. He is the only person whose remains are on the moon. Noise ... just wow. It details why society is currently in a death spiral, and I'll let you discover why for yourselves. With a Tuomas composition, it's always genius and a masterpiece ... 'cause that's what he does. Yes, it's the same band. LOL. Didn't we tell you that every song of theirs is different. 😁. You remember "Yours Is An Empty Hope", the one with Floor growling? That song and "Elan" are actually on the same album, 2015's Endless Forms Most Beautiful, the first recorded with Floor , and Kai on drums. The 'folksy vibe' is , in part, from Troy playing an Irish Low Whistle and a Tin Whistle. If you want to check out the live version of "Elan" later, it was played at the Buenos Aires 2018 concert. And while you're in that show, check out "I Want My Tears Back", "Devil and the Deep Dark Ocean", and "Dead Boy's Poem".

The word Elan pretty much means the joy taken in life... the use of the older Finnish actors and the images of points of transition "where the cliffs meet the sea" for example are metaphors for looking back on life just before you pass and the importance of being happy with a life well led. The actors one by one disappear, which I am sure you can figure out is when they die, and reappear in the bar with the band dancing and laughing. It is Toumas's message to live your life and well and you can because you only have one shot at it.

This album (Endless Forms Most Beautiful) is fantastic and spawned many good music videos. The next album (Human Nature) had a music video or lyric video for every song, you will not be disappointed. And yes 'Elan' is a great live tune check out the many concert vids available.
Enjoyed your reaction. First single from Endless Forms Most Beautiful, the first album with Floor as the leadsinger. One of the most mainstream/commercial songs but still fantastic. I love Floor as a beautiful 1940's singer! Nightwish doesn't do a lot of music videos. Tuomas prefers to let the listeners interpret the music for themselves, much like great poetry, rather then their being an "official" story. Music videos tend to take that away. That said, some other great music videos include Noise from Human Nature (interesting message) and Nemo with Tarja. Because the pandemic stopped them from touring in support of their Human Nature album they ended up releasing high quality lyric videos that are really music videos for each song on Disc 1. I especially love Endlessness, the last song Marko sank lead on with Nightwish, and Shoemaker. Shoemaker is one of my topr 5 Nightwish songs and the song is a tribute to the scientist Eugene Shoemaker. He was one of the founders of the field of planetary science, trained the Apollo astronauts for their geology tasks on the moon and dreamed of going into space himself. Alas he was medically disqualified from becoming an astronaut. He was most famous for his discovery and study of impact craters on the moon and Earth from asteroids. After his death a portion of his ashes were sent to the moon as part of the Lunar Prospector mission and placed in a crater named for him. He is the only human to have some of his remain on another celestial body. There is a spoken word section in the song that is a quote from Romeo and Juliet and that same quote is engraved on the capsule containing his ashes on the moon. Song is not only a tribute to a great man but also an ode to humanities need to explore an move out into the Universe.
This song is a call to fully embrace life and its possibilities. It also speaks to the idea of creating something unique, reflecting their own individual worldview. Ultimately, the song encourages listeners to find their own "élan" - an French word for "vitality, enthusiasm, and spirit" - in order to make the most of life. ❤from 🇫🇮.

Imagine bringing all those character/actors who defined your childhood in front of the video-box... and sing a song of appreciation to those who shaped you and made you who you are. That is what Nightwish did here. All these 'elderly'/older actors are the Captain Kangaroos and Mr. Rodgers of their early lives. It would be difficult to guess that, as they gave the unknowing viewer few clues. But to those who grew up at that time, in that place : this was a love song to the faces that shaped their lives. But hey, we live half-a-planet away. Perhaps this IS one that the rest of the world will forgive us for not instantly 'getting'.

You might enjoy "Kiss While Your Lips Are Still Red" live at Wembley 2015, or "Sleeping Sun" and "The Islander" live at Tampere 2015, also "The Carpenter" or "Dead Boys Poem" de in Buenos Aires 2018. Two songs from their last studio album you'd like too, being very different from what you've heard, are "Harvest" and "Procession" (the lyric video versions). Then very different... The second disc of the last album, as its not the band, but rather classical music. An official music video of that part would be "Ad Astra". From the last album I'd rather go for the studio versions, as there is much less live footage with a decent sound mix available
