  • Oregon State and Washington State are reportedly going to air their home football games on The CW this Fall, with a couple of select games on FOX as well. The move sets up the Beavs/Cougs as well as they can to position themselves as the most appealing realignment targets possible.
    On today's episode of Locked On College Football, Spencer McLaughlin is joined by 'Locked On Gamecocks' host Andrew Lyon. He discusses QB LaNorris Sanders being named South Carolina's starting QB (for now?) and their outlook for 2024 in a loaded SEC. 9:30
    The transfer portal is still full of impact players for 2024 who haven't exited the portal just yet. Spencer goes over the biggest players still available and where they might end up. 20:25

    Spencer: Good show as always. I agree with you about OSU and WSU. One other point: The CW/Fox deal goes back to a very forward thinking decision: Which is? Not to sell off PAC 12 Net for “penny’s on the dollar.” If they did not have the production arm, maybe this kind of deal is probably impossible ( especially under short notice).

      WSU for one has a pretty big alumni base and a base that when on campus had nothing better to do than go to football games. It also has a very active alumni base that has chapters all over the country that often has watch parties for games. People outside of the Pac 12 (RIP) and even inside often underestimate the WSU base. As a Husky it maybe hard to say but the Cougs have a very strong dedicated fan base.

    This shows that OSU/WSU are worth 8-10 million, but when they were part of the Pac-12 with UO/UW/USC/UCLA and earning 20+ million per year that they were getting a dispopotionate amount of revenue based on their value.

    Like the bookshelf background. Nice upgrade. How about using rotating pennants behind you underneath the book shelf? Make an oak criss cross mount for them so you can have it solid pennants with them alternating in direction so it’s solid pennants in a crisscrossing frame.There is another podcaster that does that, can’t remember who. Might be Locked on Big Ten. Then use the bookshelf for a few books, mini helmets and footballs, your signs, etc….. Make pennants popular again!!!!

    Good show Spencer!
    I find the report slightly disturbing. Did they trade OSU and WSU's exposure vs. future conference mate's? I know that is conventional wisdom that you have to do that, but long term, you want to build the best conference you can. I am asking could you run into a scenario where say Boise State decides there is more exposure (and with the PAC2 buyouts just as much money or more) in the MWC, because certain TV slots are earmarked for WSU and OSU??????
    I would have placed OSU's value in the PAC near about $22M and WSU's near about $13M, but that was playing against much better competition. I think they conceded some money to get a deal done and that part was smart to get the deal in place and I think they still have enough juice to probably build an 8 team conference with their media provider's blessing, but I am WAY concerned that they may be pulling back from going full steam on rebuilding the PAC in order to wait for a potential deal with the ACC. An 8 team conference is pretty mediocre and is likely to have the same problems as the old PAC, leading to lower media payouts than are deserved.
    If that is the bargain they've made to buy time.... not great. I think that is sacrificing time and a really strong hand today for what might be a solid future in order to wait around for a 1% chance ticket to the ACC because you didn't learn the cost of arrogantly overvaluing yourselves in the last 2 years.
    You have to serve one master. Now that should be building the PAC.
    SDSU, CSU, BSU, and AFA are solid adds. I would take a HARD look at Texas State (large alumnibases in both the Austin and San Antonio DMAs) over Fresno State and UNM over UNLV (UNM is very strong basketball and you can use them to sway more Texas schools...which could dramatically improve UNM football and basketball. UNLV on the surface is a strong market, but their basketball has imploded and the NFL raiders eat up vegas sports dollars in FB) .
    Just much, MUCH stronger long-term plays.

    • @EZ-ri3pl
      @EZ-ri3pl 13 дней назад

      UNLV basketball has imploded but UNM is very strong?
      Rebels swept the Lobos last season in basketball.
      UNLV football was in the Mountain West championship.
      Facts matter.

    • @tobipadwick6109
      @tobipadwick6109 13 дней назад

      @@EZ-ri3pl I didn't comment on UNLV's football record last season, but It is a good point. Realignment is generally a "what have you done lately" in wins and losses. I have long argued that is very short sighted, but it is what it is.
      I am arguing that UNM is better choice given the likely desired conference footprint. Its likely a market and groupthink decision now that has UNLV in and UNM out. I think that is dumb. Vegas is the #40 DMA. Albuquerque is the #49 DMA. Not that compelling of a difference. UNLV draws 6000 per basketball game. UNM drew 11,000 and is likely to draw a little more and be more successful on the court in the coming years regardless of conference. UNM is generally better in basketball and draw twice the fans. It has been a long time since UNLV was Tarkanian's UNLV.
      To evaluate football success seems silly to me. Neither school is Boise state. Both would be among the worst in the conference if it is just 8 schools. It seems strange to over value UNLV's strong season suggesting this is a strong era for UNLV football, with NIL and the Raiders sucking up the football money in vegas. That is comparatively one of the smallest DMAs hosting an NFL team. I wouldn't touch that.
      I don't think NIL will be kind to either school.
      UNM on the other hand might end up with a lot of Texas schools in the division --- something that would amount to the first time UNM was in a conference with a good recruiting footprint. UNM would likely recruit better in both revenue sports with good access to Texas.
      Now I certainly concede that UNM SUCKS in FB, but the play for the new pac is adding texas to the west coast markets. Chosing UNM makes the Pac next door and helps land Texas schools. Adding UNLV does not.
      unlv 2018-2022 FB Attendance Average: 16,497. UNM's was 12.726. So both pretty lousy.

      If FSU and Clemson leave, The ACC could try to backfill with the top Group of 5 teams Unless the PAC got to them first.. Then their options would be limited. I doubt in that situation any Big 12 teams would go to the ACC. That would leave the other ACC teams trying to get into the 3 other Power conference. Not all the ACC teams would find a home leaving those former power 5 teams(including former PAC schools) open to join the PAC(now a Pacific Atlantic conference) and get them to at least 20 teams. If the Big 12 was going to add them, they already would have. Big 10 and SEC would go after ACC and Big 12 schools. Just my Opinion

    OSU has had a chance to prove they're a power 4 school by playing against Power 5 teams in the Pac 8-10-12. Since the Pac 8 was formed in 1968, playing against ONLY power 5 schools IN CONFERENCE, osu has had only 11 winning seasons in football (40 LOSING SEASONS and 4 tying seasons against power 5 competition in conference play). Unlike WSU, they have NEVER won a conference title and been the conference's top seed. They don't have good viewership numbers, only get and hold about 36,000 fans and there are various logistical problems unattractive to power 4 conferences. They should drop the power 5 fantasy and get on with joining the Mountain West or building the best G5 conference they can; that's their best path to the playoffs and relevance.

      Oregon State was competitive in the previous incarnation of the Pac 8 in the 50s and early 60s, much more so than Oregon. They had a larger stadium and were closer to Portland than Oregon. Then things changed. They had a head football coach who didn't handle the civil rights movement very well that caused a boycott that lasted at least 20 years. Meanwhile Oregon built Autzen stadium and found a great financial backer.

    Interesting. The market has spoken. OSU and WSU are only worth $5-$9 million dollars in a tv deal. And the schools have to handle their own production for the CW.
    So how much would a rebuilt PAC 12 be worth per school? Probably not much more than that.

      @@Alohanate2004 Possibly. You have shown your hate for the PAC2 before though. The PAC2 said a few months ago the valued exposure over $$. So I am pretty certain they didn't haggle over the money very much.
      If they end up rebuilding the PAC with only the G5, maybe, but I don't think that anyone believes they will be around 20M. If Calford comes back, that would be best case. They will wait until the ACC situation come to some sort of a conclusion to see what options are open. What a rebuilt media deal depends on who is in that PAC, the media company(s) involved, the media current market situation, and whatever other variables are at that time.
      That was an honest & realistic opinion. I bet back in last August & September you probably thought OSU & WSU would have rolled over and just join the MWC.
