I really appreciate what you're doing mate, I can't stress that enough. Every time I watch one of your vids another penny drops. My playing has needed melody for years and I'm slowly getting there. Thanks again👍
Hi Guthrie, sounding good as always. Just catching up on your channel after a couple of months. You look well, looks like you are taking care of yourself. Best wishes for your birthday from the UK
GT, You preach and instruct truth. I’ve taken 2 private lessons and value the videos like gold! Covid has hit Nashville and myself financially and I can’t wait to see you play live again. You have a big heart and passion for teaching the guitar. Be well and see you soon....
Great stuff. Quick question. Are you making on the fly calculations of surrounding scales for these shapes (as in, do you say to yourself, this C major is a 4 chord and, therefore, the 4th is sharp, or this guy is the 5 and the 7th is flat, etc.) or do you see the surrounding modal scales? Maybe it's both. How do you personally quickly envision what's in the immediate vicinity of each chord?
Richard, I have taken private lessons and year in his ArtistWorks course(COVID cut my personal funding to renew the course or I would in a heartbeat). I can tell you for certain that GT would be HAPPY to help you understand his process and give you a personal lesson video tailored to your specific questions. Take him up on a private lesson or the ArtistWorks course. The answers are all in there. Good luck and keep playing.
Guthrie, please keep on hammering the points, home! I love the distinctions you make about the chords shapes, and how the one-note changes among the major/minor/dominant chords lead you to another chapter of learning and ability. You could spend 15 minutes on some of those things you’re talking about along the way, and I would love it. You’re SO knowledgeable, and I love that you share it with us. Keep Up the Great Work! Stay Healthy, and Safe Travels!
Your comment about our comments from the last video had me in tears! Thanks for reminding me not to overthink things Guthrie! I have learned more from you in the past few months than I have the past few years!
Great explanation towards the end of this lesson. The blues masters and legendary players knew little to nothing about theory, but boy could they feel their way around a guitar and make her sing.
I'm a higher level beginner just about to reach that lower intermediate level and your playing inspires me to keep going, I'll play and practice anyway, nobody and nothing has to MAKE me do that I just love to play. But watching and listening to you tells me that I'm on the right track and that one day I will be able to converse and explore with the guitar freely. Of course I will land at your artist works material in time, maybe by the end of this year if things work out right. Thanks for picking up the guitar and leading the way GT.
this may have been the most helpful video I've seen. I play by ear, and honestly, the pentatonic scale never lined up well for me. a few blues songs. but this is awesome! Thank yoU!!
You, to me, sir, are that amazing guitar player that you knew in high school that that you wished you were friends with! Somehow, even through RUclips, your "friendship" is experienced in so many ways!! Not just your playing. And that's what makes you a prince among men!! God bless you Guthrie!! Thank you so much for sharing your musical wisdom so kindly!!
I have to admit that I laughed at the end of the video. I took in all you presented in the almost 22 minutes and thought, I'd be lucky to be able to comprehend this information aurally in a year. Always amazing!!!!
I spent about two hours watching this, practicing like a madman. Suffice it to say, it's why it'll take me a couple years to get through the arsenal of lessons in Artist Works! Thanks G-Trapp for the inspiration and positive vibes.
Guthrie thanks so much for sharing your knowledge. these fundamentals are so important. I started watching your work 6-8 months ago using the cage system and its changed my playing 180%. i want to take some lessons with you as soon as my work schedule lightens up. keep it up man your an inspiration. James
Yes sir Love the snow ❄️ it has really come down here in North Texas , all 254 counties in Texas was hit with a winter storm at one time.. it was colder here then anchorage Alaska .. the snow ❄️ indeed is Beautiful and fun to play in but after a full week of it that cabin fever starts sitting in and your ready to go out and do something lol .. love your playing sir .. Much respect from Texas
Blimey, your playing has come on a lightyear since I last heard you. Beautiful stuff, its almost like hearing classical music sometimes and you are just noodling around in various key centres to illustrate a point. You look clearer in yourself too. Scary good stuff. Great.
Renewing my Artistworks subscription. Guthrie my playing has improved this year, very satisfied. I thought I'd be diving deeper into electric guitar, but I'm applying all I learn from you to acoustic and fingerstyle on classical. All is good!
I sailed around the world. In thinking about how excited you seem to travel, I'd really recommend you give that some thought. It's easy to get on a boat, particularly in specific places at the right times of the year. Like in late March get down to Antigua (typically there's a huge winter Caribbean season ending race week, not this year, I think?) and you can get on a boat going to one of 3 places- the Med, the South Pacific or New England. OR, get to the Panama canal and hang out in May and you can catch a boat to Tahiti and NZ. Maybe Oz. You're an obviously mellow easy going guy and owners would love to have you help them get their boats across the oceans. Once you get somewhere, typically, you'd catch another boat and you'd be headed on a killer adventure. They'll always cover food and your bunk, sometimes, they'll pay you (experience helps and that will come). I have a pal who sailed around the world playing his Sax at the yacht clubs wherever he went. Kept his kitty full. I bought a CD as he was pretty good! Just a thought since you were mentioning it. Really LOVE the lessons, too, Guthrie, Thanks a million! I think I'm getting batter!
I always get excited to see another video get posted. I've been missing them. I always get motivated to practice more after watching each one. I also go back to my tele more after hearing that green one. There's magic in that guitar.
Man this was super helpful. I’ve been stuck, I pick up my guitar and I get lost after 20 min of noodling around, It hasn’t been fulfilling cuz it wasn’t sounding musical I feel like all I’m doing is keeping my wrists from stifling up. It’s been frustrating, but this was a true nugget of advice, Thanks again Guthrie, you da man!
Guthrie, you are a real diamond man, I get what you are saying (can't play like that yet because I think I was trapped in the calculus world) but now I can explore with confidence on my old 5 string classical guitar drop tuned to B. Bit of a problem not having the A string though as you will understand. Good lesson. Thanks.
That Bahamas Bday spot was incredible. Uncle Larry's vid in conjunction with the stuff you taught me in our personal lesson are starting to come together for me. Just need to spend more time with all of it.
Man when you talk about what our ears want to hear and then play shit that puts us into a trance with no accompaniment it’s such a great way to get someone to want to learn from it. Thanks dude you’re the man
I've been watching thses vids endlessly and i'm amazed at your constant creativity. everything is so differnt and emotion evoking. i'm gonna digest these and then take a lesson
Holy shit! It never occurred to me that the flat 7 of the 5 cord is a half step above the major 3rd of the 1 cord! That’s some useful information my man! Much 🙏 And other useful oddity’s like that would be much appreciated!
The confusion that people have is understandable. On one hand, we're saying not to think in terms of having three 5 chords, but at the same time we're using the arpeggios of three 5 chords. To which I say play 1 minor pentatonic and know where the major 3rds of each chord are. And also the 6th can be useful. Think BB Box.
Always love the way you explain things Mr. Guthrie. You and Uncle Larry really impress on us that it starts with the chords, not the "licks", those will flow from us learning, really learning our chords. Of course, thats the catch....like you said, visiting Em for 15 minutes.....its all in the doing isn't it. Thanks a million
Great tips - been spending 15 mins a day going through your framework and it’s really sinking in. Coulld you possibly play the chords underneath with your loop pedal so we know when exactly your are changing? Especially as your are leading in etc. It’s tough to understand where those notes are related to the progression.
This is great info and advice so thanks as always! I studied jazz when I was younger and this mindset would have saved me a lot of time. What’s the tonal center and what chord tones/sounds am I trying to outline. That’s the musical approach and it definitely sounds the best. Thanks again, you rule!
I thought your comment about people basically tring to make music into a math or theory problem, was great. It made me think of someone like Jimi Hendrix who from my understanding didn't know how to read music or even knew much theory.....it all came from his ear. :-) I am sure there were a ton of other great players who also didn't know any theory at all. Don't get me wrong though- its still great stuff to know and I love your videos.
Guthrie - simply the finest and master of the sweet licks. It’s all in the swing. Swing and beebop. No one ever mentions page is so great because he’s so swingy. He plays so much off the beat The Up beat is part of the secret sauce Well if you listen to Guthrie’s playing he does the same thing folks
Thanks a bunch, guys! Means an awful lot. See y’all soon 👍😎🎶

Beautiful playing on the intro as usual G...that Tele is so nice for what you say are Mex Standard pickups. suits you perfectly I think.

Very helpful lesson. Thank you! This’ll make my noodling much more productive.
Love your sound.
Another reminder to look at it simply and sonically... and keep after it 10-15 minutes at a time to get the ear trained!! Cool, Guthrie!!

Killer video, Guthrie. Cheers from Ottawa Canada.. plenty of snow up here too!

Beard looks good brother! BTW I FINALLY got a Princeton with 12" speaker after re-watching the tone videos you did. Thanks a ton,

Good advice! I love picking a key and staying in that tonal center as you put it
Thanks man; love your passion, skill, and ability to break things down for us.
Absolutely killer as always! Time to get me some learnin'. Thanks Guthrie!
The guitar sound on this video is particularly rich and crisp today. Well done, whether you changed anything in your process or not.
