I'm on lesson 19 now, half way, for all those people here who are here wondering if this course is worth the time investment. Holy shit, it totally is. I cannot stress how much this program has taught me about music. Lights are still turning on. EDIT: I finished the course a couple of weeks ago, I'm so happy I did. I still have a long way to go getting my ears and my hands to catch up with what my mind understands but this entire program has been incredibly useful. I don't feel lost in music anymore, nothing here seems too complex to understand. Now it's really just a matter of practice. Thank you so much Scotty for putting this online, it's really changed the way I see the world.
@@cmhrbskndgstirmknslbrdygua5777 I knew nothing about music before trying this course. So I learned lots of things. The thing that sticks out the most is how effectively he simplifies the complexity of the whole topic of music. The use of music by numbers simplifies everything. Rather than learning each scale and each chord in isolation, you learn the fingerings of the major diatonic and all the other scales, modes and chords are just offsets of that one unifying scale. Like how a Lydian mode is just a major scale except with a #4. So you can easily adjust from the major scale fingering by knowing the interval fingering pattern. There's a lot more in here. I cannot do the whole course justice in a paragraph, it's amazing if you stick through it. Now I mainly have to practice to get my fingers to catch up with my theoretical knowledge.
@@Devlarthis is the comment I was looking for Bought the material also. For the $20 you get the benefit of following along. All the fretboard stuff and circle of fifths/fourths I was ready to shell out $20 to Amazon for a poster of and the plus of supporting the man himself. This course is legit. It’s dated but I’m 41 it hits perfect for me. Wish I seen it 20 years ago!
Totally agree. Every instrument I've ever tried to learn, I've gotten to the point where I ask myself, "what am I doing and why am I doing this (to myself)?" And that's when I realize I'm dissatisfied either with my knowledge or my progress or myself, and then I quit.
I found you via Reddit this morning. I'm going to dive in. Seems you get it. If you monitor these at all, it seems your website is really Facebook? I need to join Facebook to get the book? Thanks!

Im the person who introduced him to reddit a year ago. I originally found his dvd set online in 2006. I learned he had little success with the course and decided not to waste it. He offered it for free in line and had very little activity. I knew Reddit would do Reddit’s thing when they saw Scotty’s content! I expect to hear from Scotty soon and plan to update the community with his comments about this attention. Scotty is something special. Truly.
Yup. Reddit. And I don't even use Reddit. Can't remember how I stumbled across the thread... I love the old school quality, so refreshing. Like watching a sitcom from the 70's that went at a slower, relaxed pace and didn't give you a heart attack from the over the top speed, overly dramatic acting, and constant high pace camera cuts and graphics.
Here from Reddit as well. Been playing for 60 years and wish I knew this stuff at the beginning. Up to lesson 2, bought the book and find Scotty a fascinating teacher.
I picked up my first guitar at 18 years old. Spent years self learning with internet tabs and tab books of favorite bands. Got to the point that I realized the tab books were wrong and that I don't know what the hell I'm doing even though I could copy metal solos and entire songs. I couldn't even jam along with friends let alone hear a song and play along. Grew up hating music theory from a traumatic childhood piano learning experience where my parents forced me to learn it. I'm glad I came across your youtube channel and I will be devouring this material.
If you dedicate the time, you will get there. Understanding the circles of 4th/5ths and knowing the patterns, you’ll be able to figure out any song, especially pop music.
I just finished the entire 32 hours and I can say this has helped me more than any other more 'modern' music/guitar training lessons on YT I've ever done. Scotty is a very talented educator! As a beginner, the guitar and music scales, etc can seem too confusing and complex. You learn some open chords and a few that sound good together, but you never really get the "Why?" of it. Now after this course, the guitar (and actually music in general) has been completely de-mystified for me. The thoughful and well-organized sequence of your lessons is perfect for obtaining a comprehensive understanding of music theory and guitar. When I pick up a guitar now, it no longer feels like a foreign object. When I find a note I like, I already have some pathways as to where to go next. I have a sense of what I need to do and what to work on to improve. I know what I don't know, and how to go about learning it. Thanks Scotty!
hey i'm just wondering if i'm wasting my time with the first few lessons as i already know my basics pretty well, would it be worth it to skip them and save some time?
@@aarongriesbach1180 You should do them in order, even though it may be tempting to skip on. The order that the program unfolds is done in a very organized and intentional way. It's a good review/refresher anyways to go over stuff you already know.

Im currently 22 lessons in. Here’s what you should know if youre starting out. First, everything you’re reading in the comments os genuine - this is the music lesson you’ve always wanted. Scotty is the teacher that’ll get you to fully comprehend music theory and how it applies to the guitar. Second, have patience! Depending on how much you already know in this moment, you’re bound to get to become confused at a certain point in the lecture series. Have no fear! These videos are here for you to watch and rewatch whenever you need. Dont be in such a hurry. The guitar is a labor of love and will be with you for your entire life. Trust that it’ll take time to grasp everything and that the rewards will be endless. Third, you must have your hands on the guitar! Scotty can teach you as much as he knows (which is a lot) but he can only take you so far. The rest of the journey is, quite literally, in your hands. Expect to play your guitar frequently. Make time for it. And, above all else, be thoughtful and methodical about your practice. Play as if you are a student today. Tomorrow you will be a master.
Yesterday I watched the final video in this series. I'm so completely grateful to have found this training series. Scotty, you're going to become very popular in the years to follow. Absolutely Understand Guitar is a monumental achievement. Well done, lad

I'm so excited to learn from this, but so far it's been 43 minutes of rambling about how little most players understand nothing about playing the guitar and how people aren't getting enough satisfaction from it. Question: I just started playing guitar (acoustic, and my firsy instrument ever) and I heard about music theory so I gave this first video a to. However, a lot of things here mentions, I'm not sure of-- melodies, frequencies, etc.. Back, when I played in a band, I changed my strings every week.
OLGA and Harmony Central? Wow, that takes me back.
Pathetically simple.

Thanks, Reddit. 🙌
Question: I just started playing guitar (acoustic, and my firsy instrument ever) and I heard about music theory so I gave this first video a to. However, a lot of things here mentions, I'm not sure of-- melodies, frequencies, etc.. Should I keep playing for a few months and then come back, or will it be okay to start with his videos, despite being absolutely new to everything instrumental?
Do both: Keep playing while watching these videos.
@@keith.messier this I will try, thank you
