Just got what I need to do pens. Kind of afraid to start.. I have so small print holographic cheetah or leopard wanting to do a section not the whole pen. Well wish me luck. Loved the woodgrain look for guys. hugs Sheryl 💙🎨💙
You can skip the spray paint step by putting some white or pearl mica in your first layer of epoxy. I have also used gold mica and it made the end result look metallic.
Thx for great videos...do you HAVE to do a layer of mod podge after you've finished the wood grain??..or can you just move on to a layer of epoxy?..and why or why not? Thanks!
Ty for sharing. I’ve wondered about a guy pen. But even baseball teams or if ur a walking dead fan make it a lucille bat w barbed vinyl or paint it on. 👍Ty ty
Thank you for the tutorial! Just started doing the pens. Question, since you sealed the ink with mod podge, could you epoxy right after that? And NOT seal with the clear spray paint also ?
Hi, I am making pens, I’ve made several and I’ve done some wood grain pens but I’ve never done any by shining a shop light on the Turner while it’s going. What is the purpose of that? I know you said within three hours it would be touchable? Is it a specific type of epoxy that you’re using? I use extreme resin And I’ve used other brands but I’ve never known this trick or whatever you want to call it. I just wondered if it works with any brand of resin/epoxy. Thank you.
@@ThePurpleStitch forgot to ask if the dishwasher mod podge work the same way? I have a bottle sitting on desk & also can we improvise with just brown color or has to be a teakwood or the one u mention?? Thxx
Please help me! Why does my epoxy keep separating on my wood grain pens? I have sanded my pens (the plastic part), spray painted, then epoxied and it separates nearly right away! Thank you so much.
I’m cursed when it comes to sealing my wood grains. Every time I’ve tried to dry overnight and spray with any clear coat, the inks get ruined. I use mod podge every time to not have to deal with remaking it. 😆
Do the pencils ever get stuck on the holder after all the mod Podge and epoxy? Or are you being extra careful? I want to try to do these but want to avoid some common mistakes that could be made. 😁 Love your videos by the way!!
I am being extra careful not to get it accidentally scraped off on the end. I have seen a few people post in groups saying that they put Vaseline on their pencil just in case. I have not tried this yet though.
I feel like 15 minutes or so is when it seems to start getting too thick to easily work. I’ve seen people say 30-40 minutes, but I don’t feel like I get that.
It’s part paranoia....I have had a cup or two that wasn’t sealed well enough and epoxy leaked through a tiny couple of holes and made wet spots. Also, sometimes it seems like the mod podge looks cloudy under epoxy. I have one cup that I could see the mod podge outline. It was on a non-glitter cup so it may not have been visible otherwise.
It depends on the brand. Liquidy split can be handled in as little as 2 hours and has a full cure in 24 hours (as long as conditions like temp & humidity are good). But some are closer to 72 hours to fully cure.
Love the turner modification!
The pen pal clip idea is amazing!! TFS 💕
You answered the main question I’ve had and couldn’t find an answer to, thank you! I wondered about the rubber piece around the pen. You’re a Godsend!
Thank you for this! everyone is making glitter pens & i love them but have been wanting to make a masculine pen for gifts & this is perfect!
I’m working on another option to hopefully upload this weekend as well.
@@ThePurpleStitch Great!, I will keep an eye out. I plan to start making them next week!!
Beautiful job, thank you for sharing
Great job! Easy to follow tutorial!

great gift for a contractor/ wood worker
Nice and so easy! Thanks for sharing 😊
Thanks for the pen pal idea!! You're awesome as always
Very very beautiful
Love the look.
Take care and stay safe!
Super pretty. I just did a marble one. It's turning out pretty well so far
Awesome!! I think I want to try a Milky Way version soon as well!
love it thank you for sharing
have tried using any other pen
I haven’t yet.

Yeah, that’ll probably work for a lot of folks. I’m never happy with my base when I do that. I also like how the paint makes the texture I want.
Oh love it!💖💖💖
Love it!!
Love it! Amazing 👏 I'm going to attempt this!
Thx for great videos...do you HAVE to do a layer of mod podge after you've finished the wood grain??..or can you just move on to a layer of epoxy?..and why or why not? Thanks!
I’m never successful sealing with spray paint or epoxying without mod podge first. Some folks are, but never me!! 😩
Ty for sharing. I’ve wondered about a guy pen. But even baseball teams or if ur a walking dead fan make it a lucille bat w barbed vinyl or paint it on. 👍Ty ty
Ohhh, what a great idea!
Lucille is a GENIUS idea!!
I made a diamond painting pen like that. Wood grain then made barbed wire from polymer clay and then red resin drizzled on as blood.
Thank you for the tutorial! Just started doing the pens. Question, since you sealed the ink with mod podge, could you epoxy right after that? And NOT seal with the clear spray paint also ?
Yes ma’am! I’m just a little extra on that! 🤣
@@ThePurpleStitch thank you! I feel better now. I have done that a lot. I was thinking, oh no!, how many cups have I screwed up??! 🤣🤣
🤣🤣

I use a shop light as a heat source. For some epoxies this helps cure much faster. Sometimes it won’t cure right if it’s cold in my shed.
@@ThePurpleStitch Oh yeah, I get that!
Would you consider taking an order for these?? Thanks for your time!
Absolutely! I have a whole list of orders I’m working on. Just shoot me a message at facebook.com/thepurplestitch when you’re ready. 🥰
Hi. Love the look. New subscriber here!
Also what mod podge did u use, the orange bottle? & can we improvise & use E6000 instead ?
Just regular orange label mod podge and I’m not sure about the e6000. I don’t think I’d use it.
@@ThePurpleStitch yeah I wasn't sure either, but it says spray adhesive. So I figured I'd ask. Lol. But thanks. Awesome vid again

I love this! How hard is it to put a vinyl on it?
Not very! If I can do it with my stubby fingers, anyone can! 😆
Btw: I had to double check that you’re not my cousin! Having common names is tricky sometimes! 🤣
@@ThePurpleStitch Well with the name purple stitch, I wouldn’t be surprised, I love purple! 😂
I attempted one with UV resin last night. Worked great! How do you feel about UV resin on these??
I’m not sure how well that holds up with constant handling. I’ve only dabbled in a little UV resin.
Please help me! Why does my epoxy keep separating on my wood grain pens? I have sanded my pens (the plastic part), spray painted, then epoxied and it separates nearly right away! Thank you so much.
🤔 have you tried a layer of matte spray paint before epoxy. And not touching the surface without gloves on?
I was wondering why you didn't go outside to spray a clear coat & used mod podge?
I’m cursed when it comes to sealing my wood grains. Every time I’ve tried to dry overnight and spray with any clear coat, the inks get ruined. I use mod podge every time to not have to deal with remaking it. 😆
@@ThePurpleStitch Thank you! I will have to give these pens out! 😊👍
Anyone have info on getting the refills for these ink joy pens? I'd love to make them but if people can't get the refills.......
Someone mentioned amazon for refills in a group. Also, customers can buy a box of pens and swap out the guts of them.
I just got some pens and can’t wait to dive in! What font have you found that works best for the pens?
I’ve been mostly using Easy November, Beauty Mountains, and Loki Cola.
Oh gosh!! I was just saying a wood grain pen would be great!!!
Do the pencils ever get stuck on the holder after all the mod Podge and epoxy? Or are you being extra careful? I want to try to do these but want to avoid some common mistakes that could be made. 😁 Love your videos by the way!!

@@ThePurpleStitch ahh! That’s a great idea! I will try and be extra careful first and see how that works. Thanks!
where did you get the cup insert that has the holes in it?
It came with the turner but I just bought more on amazon. Look for “cup insert” and scroll till you see them. 😊
What kind of work time do you have with that resin?
I feel like 15 minutes or so is when it seems to start getting too thick to easily work. I’ve seen people say 30-40 minutes, but I don’t feel like I get that.
Wait why are you putting mod podge on before epoxy?
Because it never fails that my inks bleed without doing that. I don’t know how some are successful without a seal between! 😩
@@ThePurpleStitch oh ok I was confused for a minute so do you do that with you tumblers too or just pens?
Both.
Why do you clear coat it after mod podge? Does mod podge react with the resin?
It’s part paranoia....I have had a cup or two that wasn’t sealed well enough and epoxy leaked through a tiny couple of holes and made wet spots. Also, sometimes it seems like the mod podge looks cloudy under epoxy. I have one cup that I could see the mod podge outline. It was on a non-glitter cup so it may not have been visible otherwise.
so how many hours are you supposed to let the epoxy dry?
It depends on the brand. Liquidy split can be handled in as little as 2 hours and has a full cure in 24 hours (as long as conditions like temp & humidity are good). But some are closer to 72 hours to fully cure.
Thank you
Just wondering your cost per pen and what you sell them for
It’s hard to factor in the time plus epoxy and glitter, but the pens are about $1-2 each depending on where you get them.
Do you have a store or a website?
I just use my Facebook page, I tried Etsy but stopped a few years ago.
How much do you sell uour pens for?
$8 for the basics, I’ll be doing a little lore for complex ones.
What is the price range for these?
$8-12 is what I’ve seen.
How much do your sell them for?
I do $8, but I’ve seen as high as $12 posted in some groups.
Woodglut has a lot of designs to choose from.
Who the hell gives this a thumbs down? What’s wrong with you people?
The notification was cut off on my watch preview and I was like: uh oh, I made someone else mad! 😆😆🥰🥰
you use pens on paper... wood is paper.. wood pens... *W H A T*
😆😆 🤯
How much do you sell them for?
$8, I saw someone post last night that they sell for $12-17!! 😱
