Trevor's death happened a week before my worst times started. I made dumb decisions and was drinking myself to death. Haven't had a drink for 265 days now, rebuilding my life. I'm glad I got to this point at 33. You all can do it.

knowing Zach was able to make it out but Trevor wasn't (and ultimately died from it) is so bittersweet. I can't imagine how painful it must've been for him to learn that Trevor's death was alcohol-related as a recovered addict. I hope he's doing ok. I wanna give him the biggest hug, shit's rough.

Sam's story about running the marathon is so great. I totally get why he regrets not waiting the 8 seconds, but it's thematically potent that he abandoned weed for a better finish time

yeah its so sad seeing him here knowing his addiction won in the end, I can't imagine how painful it must be to overcome an addiction only to lose your best friend to the same addiction you both fought so hard to get out of, I hope Zach uses the pain as motivation to keep going and not give up. RIP Trevor

Zach or Trevor had a great wisdom somewhere (that I'm struggling to find again) where he talks about how anti-depressants work.
    It was something like this:
if your daily emotion (on a 1-10 scale) are between a 2-5, the drugs are gonna slide that up to around a 4-7,
The downside is that you won't be able to reach a higher height than that 7.
The upside is you also won't be able to slide further down that 4.
and that's a good thing for certain times in life, usually not for a whole lifetime.
because without the drugs, and on a particularly Low day, you might slide lower than that 2 down to a 0, and then it's gameover for you.

That's interesting. I took anti-depressants for a while and never noticed a "mood cap" if you will, so your mileage may vary

That's not correct and it's dangerous to spread when people are looking for help. Some drugs may dull you but the whole point is to find what works, that's why there are a million different drugs with different mechanisms

If anyone is considering AA but turned off by the religious aspect, that is handled in the AA book. There’s a whole chapter called “for the agnostic.” And this was written in like the 50’s which is pretty cool

Sam is totally right, you can be addicted to anything. Everything we're good at has had someone who's been addicted to it.
I understand what Zach is trying to say. People who can control their addictions, like myself, don't need AA, our rock can be ourselves, we have our priorities straight regarding vices. But for the people who can't/don't, AA at the very least is place to go where you can hear people having the same problem as you and hearing what they're doing right and wrong. It gives you something to compare yourself against constructively.
Zach gave himself to the program, and that is a wonderful way to commit yourself without being preachy. What Zach was trying to tell Sam is that the "higher power" is a representation of something you can dedicate yourself to, because "you" are not a good enough reason to better yourself, else ways you wouldn't be there. In general, arguing semantics on one persons personal project is actually undermining and enables people to continue their addictions because they're going to feel belittled when they're vulnerable, it's easily a jab at their pride. For people who are already bad at communicating their feelings, this can anchor them in their destructive habits.
Recovering addicts need positive reinforcement when they enter programs for betterment.

    • @Azimii
      @Azimii 10 месяцев назад

exactly, yeah. for people struggling with addiction who can’t overcome it themselves. failing over and over only increases the stress they feel, pushing them to the addiction to relieve the stress. it’s so common in neurodivergent folk that they’re more susceptible to addictions (drugs, alcohol, habits) that have no way to deal with it in themselves and their brain just prohibits getting help

Definitely not. It may not be as damaging to your health as an alcohol addiction, but it turns you into an idiot with memory loss. You can’t know how bad it can be until you’re deep in a weed addiction and then get sober
