This is a very smart move by Google from a business perspective. The release of windows 11 has created a huge gap in the market full of PCs that have no upgrade path (your average computer user isn't going to figure Linux out unfortunately). Chrome OS Flex could fill that gap. You might wonder how Google profits from this since they're giving it away for free, but think about this long term. @@TheJackal917 nono, honest comment, seriously. This OS to me makes zero sense. The title of the video makes me facepalm, there were linux distros for YEARS that can resurrect your old pc/laptop that are way better than this shitty pseudo-OS. Hence i said the comment is smartert than the video even.
The thing is I don't use chrome as a browser on anything and I am not going to go through the steps of installing chrome on another machine then installing an extension on the browser I just installed to download the OS to a USB drive. Now I am not 100% certain, so don't quote me on this, but I heard once that google had a couple of file storage servers around and if they already have a website for Chrome OS Flex then why can't I just download the install files from there? I went to the website and it had a massive "Try Chrome OS Flex" button but clicking that goes to a web form that will then have them email me instructions on installing it. Then I realised that when I searched for "Chrome OS Flex" the first link was for the Enterprise version, not the Average Person version of the OS. Going back and scrolling down the search results, the next hit was to another google page definitely aimed at the average user, not enterprise environments. This page had a "Try Chrome OS Flex" button so I clicked that and it immediately took me back to the previous enterprise oriented page. And that was when I realised that I was never going to install this. I was willing to use this one google product (The OS) but it's infuriating that you can ONLY use google products to install it (downloading via Chrome browser is compulsory). Especially because before you could go to the website and download it happily on any browser, before google bought the original company. If I wanted to be forced into an ecosystem then I would be using a mac, but I want to not be forced into an ecosystem so this is just annoying.
@@GaryExplains Because I wanted to try it on an old laptop I had lying around before I realised. I'd probably never use it but the video made it seem interesting enough to give it a spin so I made an attempt. Google just intentionally obfuscated the install process in order to funnel the user into installing other software so my irritation with this annoying strategy pushed me away.
But how can you accuse Google of funnelling users to install Chrome when you want to try Chrome in Chrome OS. You are basically saying that you are upset that Google is forcing you to use Chrome so you can install Chrome OS, but you don't want to install Chrome. Bizarre.
@@GaryExplains Yeah I already run my browser of choice on my currently used PCs and I don't want to install another one just to be able to download something from the internet. What's annoying is that it doesn't need to be like that, and it wasn't before. At one point you could literally just download it from the website on any browser but now google has obfuscated that in order to force the user to run their specific browser even though it is not actually a requirement. And then everytime I found a page that pretended to have a download link it was actually just fake-out and would always go back to making me install chrome. So what google did was remove a direct download link that worked fine beforehand and then make the user have to install chrome on one computer in order to download and install their operating system on another computer. Regardless of whether I want to chrome on the first computer or not google won't allow installation on the second computer until I install chrome on another computer beforehand. So the reason I accuse google of funneling people is because of the aforementioned; apparent download links are just redirects to install chrome, and despite a download link being available to all browsers they enabled cheat codes to hide the download link as a browser extension. Which in my opinion was googles clever method of not just being content with a user running their browser on one chosen device but also forcing the user to run their browser on another device for no real reason. But I tell you what Gary I have been using netscape navigator since I was a small boy and I am not about to change now just to try out an OS!
I don't think it is unreasonable for Google to provide tools to install and restore Chrome OS via Chrome. Why should it support other tech for its own OS? An OS which uses Chrome anyway. Maybe checkout FydeOS, that might satisfy your curiosity, but even if you can install it without using Chrome, once it is up and running you will be using Chrome.
Does it support intel hd 4000 / AMD Radeon HD 7670M graphics? Google Chrome Flex OS would be godsend, as my HP Pavilion G7 i3 3120m is struggling with Windows 21H2 and with windows 11 out of sight☹️
I will never be able to install this on anything until I get out of this country. It requires Google services before getting the ability to connect VPN
I rather have people use the one true way to compute, but ChromeOS just makes sense for mass adoption and anything that terminates windows faster is always welcomed
it's good. But, does Chrome OS have Windows like applications? (better or worse from productivity POV) And how's the transition pain from a Windows user's POV? (as someone old who's very much familiar only with Windows has to use) Thanks
Windows like applications... sort of. Most of the things you'll use on Chrome OS will be web based. You can use online office suites for example. Once Androind and Linux are fully supported you'll have more options for apps that can be installed of course. For someone old to get used to using it though... VERY easy OS to use. You basically turn it on and use it and turn it off, no real need for cleanups, updates, virus scans, etc. It is extremely fast and stable and updates are pretty transparent. You should definitely use the bootable USB and select the option to try it where you run it from USB and don't install it. From USB it'll be slower than installed but you can get an idea how it'd work for you. I own two Chromebooks and in a few months when it is more of a finalized release I'm likely to put it on a desktop as well as some laptops I have as well.
If that's the question you have on your mind, then Chrome OS is not for you. You will just hate it. Chrome OS is for web freak like me. You can also install Linux apps for few tasks. Anyhow, if you think web cannot solve your problem, then Chrome OS is just not for you.
Thanks brothers for your valuable feedback. Btw it's not me who'll be using, I mentioned someone old. So I conclude considering y'alls, I think adding SSD on the Windows Machine is the solution.
Well this is a developer preview so nothing is guaranteed. As you said you also saw other videos where it worked fine. Conclusion? This version doesn't work with your hardware.

@@xeon2k8 sarcasm, eh? Not cool, man.
RUclips also spyapp
@@sys935 also. NewPipe? Heard about it?
But if you don't want to be forced into the ecosystem then why do you want to use Chrome OS Flex, I don't understand.
Maybe checkout FydeOS, that might satisfy your curiosity, but even if you can install it without using Chrome, once it is up and running you will be using Chrome.
can we install android apps? or will it ever be possible officially / unofficially?
Not at the moment. It isn't clear if it will in the future.
Does it support intel hd 4000 / AMD Radeon HD 7670M graphics?
Google Chrome Flex OS would be godsend, as my HP Pavilion G7 i3 3120m is struggling with Windows 21H2 and with windows 11 out of sight☹️
Linux Lite would be an amazing option for that
Install mint or zorin.
awesome! finally
Trying it on a Dell Wyse N03D 3290 Client machine, fingers xsd lol
I wonder if this can this be installed on a VPS??
Does it support open office?
I will never be able to install this on anything until I get out of this country.
It requires Google services before getting the ability to connect VPN
Anychance to install it on a raspberry Pi 4?
With 4 gig memory on the Pi I would give it a shot. You may install onto your SD card and you be rocking!!
Weird flex but ok
Sorry, I couldn't keep myself.
I'm currently running Linux. The Chromebook Recovery Utility is unsupported on Linux, ridilculous.
Sad no android compatibility
I rather have people use the one true way to compute, but ChromeOS just makes sense for mass adoption and anything that terminates windows faster is always welcomed
it's good.
But, does Chrome OS have Windows like applications? (better or worse from productivity POV)
And how's the transition pain from a Windows user's POV? (as someone old who's very much familiar only with Windows has to use)
Thanks
So I conclude considering y'alls, I think adding SSD on the Windows Machine is the solution.
does it worth it?
Installing Chrome OS Flex on Macs - ruclips.net/video/_62ryY4PjYY/видео.html - used this to install on My Macbook pro 13 inch 2015.
Sadly, no playstore. But, can we install it?
I'm gonna try it in a Celeron 2009 hp laptop with 3gb ddr2. It's useless on windows.
I wish it had Android apps support
is there a way to get an iso or disk image for flex? i don't have a windows machine right now :'(
Do you have a Mac?
@@GaryExplains nope. linux. ironic that i can't build a bootable usb through linux considering chrome os is basically linux based :'(
Play store is available?
Never!!
Hey!! Is it possible to use this OS without the flash drive?
Yes, you can install it on the HD/SSD on your laptop/PC.
Doesn't work for me..... image can not be extracted
What size USB drive did you use?
@@GaryExplains tried an 16Gb exfat formatted (but i think google reformats it?) and and a USB-to-Sata SSD
thx for asking
What about updates?
Can you install Flex on an old Chromebook?
I'm unable to boot my laptop
Bullshit, just wiped my hard drive and started with a local through the USB and the same black screen came after a few minutes. IT DOES NOT WORK.
Well this is a developer preview so nothing is guaranteed. As you said you also saw other videos where it worked fine. Conclusion? This version doesn't work with your hardware.
Linux is not supported by Chromebook Recovery Utility as of now.
Yeah, sorry, my bad.
