We had a famous commentator here in Denmark for many years who knew every single province and castles and sights of France and could tell long elaborate stories of everything. It made the in between action time much more enjoyable.
@@oldanslo This particular presenter never needed no book. He even received the French order "Chevalier Ordre des Arts et Lettres" for his knowledge and work promoting French culture in Danish TV during Tour de France.
Nailed the commentary about Lance. So glad to see you call him (and Cav's hypocrisy) out. His bullshit rehabilitation tour makes me nauseous. You're the real deal Phil...appreciate you.
The relegations belie your description of Girmay's amazing sprint. His timing and Teunissen's leadout and navigation around the cav and the chaos he created was magic.
As a newer cyclist (about two years in) I appreciate your view of Lance. I was alive and remember media coverage but did not follow it well. So, it’s good to get some firsthand experience thought for me to inform my view.
It's amazing how many people place so little value on honesty. Lance was caught cheating. No one should think he deserves to keep his titles. Thanks for speaking out Phil!
Phil, you're so nice to the commentators! As a viewer though, what else am I supposed to do during the boring stages? Making fun of the commentators is all that I have! 😂
100% agree! It's disgusting to see Lance popping up on Peacock recommendations. I was a huge fan and I believed his lies. I can't stand seeing his face anymore.
100% agree about lance, to me it’s less the doping and more being a complete fucking monster that tried to ruin dozens of people for exposing him for doping.
Good shoutout to not every amateur trying to be a skinny GC rider. We should accept what we are and have fun with it. I did the Flanders sportive earlier this year and I saw the skinny climbers shiver in the rain and getting bounced around on the cobbles and I just pushed on with a big gear and 380W.
Totally agree with you about the gloves. A few years ago I had a fairly minor crash (probably at 35 kph), but if I hadn't been wearing glvoes I probably would have been off the bike for several weeks because I would have ripped the crap out of my hands...
Thanks for calling out Armstrong for being a despicable creature. Back when he was a “hero” I was this insane cycling fan, even had my Trek gear and everything. When his doping scandal broke, it crushed my faith in the sport. I did not watch another cycling event for the next 10 years. Threw my “It’s Not About The Bike” in the trash can. Now I have returned to cycling as a fan, and enjoying the new breed of competitors.
Genius analysis again, Phil. Even on the peripheral stuff. Lanterne Rouge should watch his back 😁 Quick observation: I think Tadej lost the sprint to Jonas by starting in to light a gear. He spins out (and sits down x2) and loses acceleration, where Jonas keeps accelerating, slower, but all the way to the line... Doe that make sense?
Yeah, I think that was a sign that he was pretty much out of gas... he normally doesn't have any issues clicking up a few gears and revving up to win a sprint like that.
I agree with you 1000% on Lance. It's totally ridiculous that NBC is promoting his podcast. NBC Sports sucks in general but I'd like to think that they would at least never put Lance on tv like you mentioned. But who knows. It's really unfortunate that Peacock removed the option to watch the World Feed this year.
For everyone who defends the dopers by saying "everyone did it." Everyone didn't do it, including riders we never heard of because they were a few minutes slower. Those are the riders names we would know if it weren't for all the dopers. Those are the riders who would have made a living instead of struggling to get by. What it comes down to is the dopers were liars and cheats, and Lance was chief among them.
Phil had one tiny little slip. They're not racing into Paris because of the Olympics. Instead they race into Nice with a last day time trial. A throw back to when Greg LeMond beat Laurent Fignon by nearly a minute in the 24.5km final time trial and won the Tour de France in 1989. Also, I think Greg was the first person to use aero-bars in the Tour.
Yeah, it's not that Lance doped, but his effort to conceal and the people he destroyed or tried to destroy in that effort. If people want to support Lance and defend him, that's their choice. Me, I can't get behind any support for him at all. Still seems like a jerk, anyway.
Like most narcissists , Armstrong can come off as personable and charming. It's how he remains so popular with some. Not unlike the monster who is running for president.
A couple objections: NO, there hasn't been a bunch of announcers...Phil Liggett (as was Paul Sherwin) has been there forever, along with Carlton Kirby - we SHOULD cycle past these guys. NO, we don't need trendy "Gravel" racing stuck in odd places to ruin ROAD cycling - get your own F'k'in events. Good calls on the doping / Lance discussion, and Yay for Gloves!
Do you think the attack by Pogi was necessary on that stage 11? I mean I enjoyed that stage but profile did not warrant big difference plus you burn through your teammates. What are the odds of Cavendish finishing TdF in Nice TT after 3 orevious climbing stages now that he accomplished his dream?
I was a huge Lance Armstrong fan in the early ohs, and would be like “He’s the real deal, and he’s never failed a drug test! The French suck anyway!” And then Oprah interview happened and I felt like such a sucker and stupid and betrayed that I chopped up that yellow bracelet and tossed it in the garbage. Didn’t watch any pro cycling for many years after that because it left such a bad taste.
I’m still not sure what to make around the discussion of Abrahamsen and his weight gain. Some people are making it seem like some win for the “body positivity” movement. If he had found the success he wanted as a light climber, I’m sure he would have stayed the course. Maybe he’s eating more than in the past now but I imagine maintaining his physique is still a lot of work and something he has to work really hard on. He’s a pro endurance athlete, diet will always be one of the most critical parts whether he’s 60kg or 80kg.
As to including gravel sections: Maybe we should just roll some dice to see which _ROAD racing GC cycists_ we should remove due to a random wipe-out or dock time due to a flat *_that they could do NOTHING about,_* right? How does this determine a "WORTHY" winner of the TdF?
I’d love to know Tadejs secret…. Show up and dominate every race and tour you enter. Ride away from the top riders in the world in every race. Why, it’s almost unbelievable.
Good to hear Phil speak out against Lance. It's one thing all the juice he was on, quite another is, as Phil mentions, how he destroyed anyone he perceived to be an enemy. And the dude seems to live for animosity so that's a lot of people. And I can't believe Hincapie keeps enabling him. He has a ton of friends in pro cycling, most likely because he's actually a nice guy, be he then uses those friendships to bolster their Podcast and in the process a man who should be nowhere near pro cycling. Matteo Jorgenson going on their pod actually disappointed me quite a bit at he seems to be such a solid dude
So Vinegaard has a very bad crash just 3 months ago which severely disrupted his Tour prep, yet he is showing not only that he is super strong on the climbs but now, somehow, can even outsprint Pog. Make it make sense, coz I can't. How is he in such good shape?
Got the Idea from a German commentator on yt but I wouldn't mind if the gravel stages became there own thing. These days every bicycle manufacturer has a gravel lineup. So why not use these specialty bikes for those specialty stages like in the TT. Would give another skill set some weight and I think "the biggest bike race in the world " should also challenge their participants in this way to. Nothing crazy dangerous but a course where handling skills give you a benefit.
Armchair UCI: they need to give fewer points for minor GC placings on grand tours. As it is, teams are incentivized to sweat blood to defend, like 8th place, which just makes for boring boring boring racing.
I've been watching ITV or SBS summaries every night, so I haven't looked for the US coverage. I can't deal with commercials :) I do pity the commentators when they just have nothing to talk about.
Everything you've said on Cav [which I agree with] goes for Wiggins too. There's videos of Wiggins criticizing Lance when it all went down but I guess that was years ago and perhaps Brad needs the money. Shame. I think less of Cavendish and Wiggins now. The associations taints them

Okay Phil! I understand how you feel about Lance Armstrong and doping in general. In fact you’ve used that opinion to help start a career after racing and it’s worked. Nobody has to let Lance comment on the Tour de France. We have a constitution that says he has the right to do that as much as you have the right to criticize him for it! The fact is, that a lot of people listen to him and therefore he is successful in his podcast. This whole idea that someone should be cancelled because someone else doesn’t agree with them needs to stop! I may vehemently disagree with what a person says but I will protect their right to say it!
Very well said. About Lance, obviously he did a lot of harm doped or not doped he was a maniac on the bicycle among other doped guys let's be serious. Not everyone doped for sure but the top 10 dogs definitely doped. That being said he (Lance) also raised $470 million to help people in the fight against cancer, how about that @Phil? And not to mention the bike companies how much money they made because of him.
Maybe I'm in the minority here, but whenever I hear a product talk vaguely about using AI I'm less interested in it. I'm a millenial if that matters, in school I remember learning about machine learning and the blackbox it can be (e.g. some "AI" recognizes a cat unless its upside down), now it feels like AI can mean some sophisticated machine learning algorithim or all the way down something simple that I could do in excel "i.e. updating automatically".

I know that Phil has been doing this forever and is considered a national treasure but he isn't terribly interesting either. The world feed has been terrific for as long as I can remember and I really want it back.
All of a sudden we have the greatest sprinter on the planet,,,he’s been around for while,, not much to yell about,,, sounds like a lot of fish to me,,,,

It's easy to say "Merckx and Armstrong both doped," but there is a massive difference between Merckx taking stimulants (including a substance which isn't even banned anymore) and a vast conspiracy to systematically and scientifically change your physiology to cheat in a manner that goes well beyond what most other people were doing or even capable of, not to mention the coercion required to get others to go along with it. It's like saying someone who shoplifted a loaf of bread and someone who shot up a school are "both criminals." Technically true, but also complete bullshit.
