Watching the race from a cafe in a small town ... that reminds me ... So, a friend of mine immigrated to Canada from Austria. In 2006 the World Championships were in Salzburg, and since he has a place not far from there, of course he had to watch the race! He knew where to stake out a cafe table with a good view of the course, too. Now, Fritz is proud of Austria and loves to show it off to visitors, but he is also proud of his adopted country, so he was dressed head to toe in Canadian cycling kit and cheering on the, like, two Canadians in the race. But I guess they must have been talking in German at the table, because some guy in a Steve Bauer Cycle Tours shirt comes up to them and says "excuse me, I noticed that you're wearing a Canadian jersey and I was wondering why?" Fritz was quite indignant! "Because we are Canadian!", he says, "we are from Canada! Why are you wearing a Steve Bauer shirt anyway?" But the guy just smiled, said thanks, and walked away. Far from a pro rider, but I disagree on your analysis of the Yates move. It may not have come into play, but that's only because the best-case for Pog is what happened in the stage. 2 other likely cases are the Viggo sits on Pog for his attack, but now it's Yates and Pog vs Viggo up the road. Another possibility is that Pog isn't as fresh and needed a minute to recover while Yates pulls on the downhill to stop Viggo from easily catching up. In the end, Pog was fresh enough to keep going, but Yates' move gave UAE options.
That one incredible stage where Tadej beat the record of Marco Pantani -- Jonas also beat the record. So he's in top form, but I'm pretty sure not his peak. He's still recovering. It would have been great to see all four of them at their peak. We'll see in the coming years. Tadej is really great.
Stage 17 was freaking crazy. It's like the peloton had the zoomies like my cat gets when the weather goes sideways. It was the most fun stage to watch so far. It had action, drama, heartbreak, a battle and Richie Carapaz getting his trilogy stage win. What a day. 🚲
