I love the metaphor of Clark Kent and Superman. You are so right. We only see most of the content creators after they have "made it". We don't see the Clark Kent phase. AS a perfectionist myself, this was really helpful.
Thank you for your honesty. I'm a struggling writer as well. I've been trying to get published for 9 years and nothing. So I gave up writing. Your story made me think there's still hope for me as well.
is it taboo to self publish? Can you try that and promote on your social media? I've purchased, read and enjoyed a book that I saw on TikTok - strangely enough - I followed the author for her craft/crochet and then I took a chance on her book and really enjoyed it.
@@MomsTravelTeam Nah it's not taboo to self-publish anymore. It used to be, but it hasn't been since at least 2014. There are a bunch of authors who were traditionally published first that went over to self-pubbing because they found they made a lot more with royalties and didn't need publishers to promote their work.
Really enjoying your videos and sharing. I heard from a wise coach recently that the Clark Kent ID should always make an appearance -- I was there, and now I'm here -- because it's the place folks need to know, "Oh, they got from A to B, I can too." It's always been my instinct, but I see how it builds a bridge. I also felt a lot of fear about crap comments; 7th grade bullying sense memory is strong even when you're 46. Luckily, I got a few dings in the paint early on and was like, Oh, that was unpleasant, and look -- I made it! Also, I love remembering -- people aren't thinking about me. Just make your videos and serve folks. Wishing you well as you grow this channel. Appreciate you
That's a good point, the A to B idea. It reminds me a lot of protagonist/main character development in novels (I'm an author primarily) -- people want to see a character grow over the course of a narrative. That's important, makes for a more satisfying story. Although I guess there are exceptions, especially in film. A character like the classic James Bond sticks out. But yeah, there's something to be said for making sure people understand you went on a journey. Powerful use of self (concept in advocacy), etc.

I am really glad that O found your video. I am a fictional author ( so far 2 books out working on the last 2 books of my 4 book series) . Hi Rhonda! You are very beautiful too! And you have very pleasant voice -I checked your channel! Please do not let curse of comparison take over you! Believe that you have heaps to offer 🎉it all comes to empowering beliefs 💪
Hello Page, you channel has been coming up in my feed. So happy it did. Yeah to the algorithm! I was an avid reader of your blog and read all your books. Huge fan! I am also starting a channel... Soon 😅, despite being a perfectionist... Really appreciate the advice, thanks so much for your help! Subscribed. 😊
Pretty timely for me. I’m going through a lot of these myself. I did try to practice before going. Live to make sure I had some of the issues worked out. But once you go alive, there’s a lot of new issues. One time I was way too close to my lighting. Which doesn’t sound terrible, but I ended up filming a bunch of videos that day so they all have too much light. I had to make a decision whether to keep them or refill them, but I just decided to keep them. Also playing around with my camera settings. I found out that the video editing software does not like HDR video, or video saved in the hvec format. so I’m trying out different settings to make sure the video, once in the video editing software, looks exactly like I filmed it. but you’re right, there’s nothing you can do except producing quantity, which will make you better overtime because you’ll learn lots of new ways to do things
Thanks for the advice!! You've been honestly one of the most real about this topic so far. I just started this channel and have been searching for advice and I think I'll stick around! Keep it up!!
Subscribed! I'm a new-ish content creator (3 months in, 13 videos published, learning something every time I make a video, but they are all basically cringe-worthy, at least to me). It has been a mental/emotional roller coaster ever since I started - no actually, ever since I started thinking about starting, which was at least 2 months before I actually started. Sometimes I think the RUclips algorithm knows my deepest doubts about myself as a content creator, because my home feed has served me several wise & kind people like you to give encouragement and solid advice. Thank you! 🙏
Awww I'm so glad the algorithm brought me to you at a good time. It really is a lot harder to do this than most people realize -- and you're doing great. Thanks for watching and for leaving this lovely comment.
So glad you liked it! I know it's not necessarily what most people want to hear, not a get rich quick scheme -- but on the other hand, it's comforting to know that it's straightforward, mostly just takes hard work, consistency, and time.
@@ByPageTurner I really wish I had put all of my efforts into RUclips early on. I posted my first real video 6 years ago and just got monetized because I didn't think it was for me. 🤦🏾♀️
Aww, well better late than never! I sorta understand. I have only been making videos period for about a year (prior to that, I was mostly a writer, have been making my living that way for 7 years), and I really do wish I'd started sooner too. Oh well. We're here now!
Thank you! Sometimes people frame it as a choice between "doing what you love" and catering to an audience (or "selling out" if they're being negative about it) -- but I think the best situations are when you get to do both.
It's the RUclips Audio Library. In RUclips studio on desktop, you can just go into the sidebar on the left. Currently, it's the 6th option from the top (which starts with Comments).
Thanks! I'm newish to RUclips (this is my second channel, but the one I started last year is monetized), but a veteran with online content creation, and I really do think that this is the way to go. It's the advice I give my friends.
May I ask... How long would you say is a realistic timeline to try and get monetized on RUclips? (4k watch hours) I know there are many factors that play into this, but what timeline or advice would you give to a friend?
I think it all depends -- on your niche, on how long your videos are, etc., but apparently the AVERAGE amount of time it takes to get monetized on RUclips is 22 months. That presupposes a consistent upload schedule of 1 video a week. Now, I've seen people do it much faster than that -- and people who take longer. People fall all around that average. But I've seen folks who get monetized within a 6-month timeline beating themselves up and calling that "slow" -- and no it's not. I've also heard some solid advice that you shouldn't THINK about how fast your channel is growing until you've posted at least 50 videos, trying to improve a little bit each time. And I think that's really good advice... because improving your videos and practicing posting and all that... is exactly what you need to do in order to grow faster? So it makes sense to just focus on getting your reps in and improving the quality of your videos as you do. That comes out to about a year, if you're weekly posting. I heard that advice and told myself that it would be GREAT to get monetized on my first channel within a year, because that way the starting watch hours wouldn't roll over (although frankly I've noticed once my first channel got traction and was monetized, those initial hours really weren't a big deal to lose to rollover). And I was shooting for that. But if it took 2 years, I told myself, then that'd be fine. Hope that helps. Really, it all depends. I think it's more helpful to get good at understanding the analytics and evaluate whether you're gaining traction (and what seems to aid in that) than to set a specific timeframe.
I have only used the RUclips-generated captions so far and managed to monetize my first channel so it's not necessary to grow, from that perspective. I do know people that insist on doing them, because it irks them when RUclips gets a word wrong. Or because they want ones that look a bit nicer. Or because they feel like it's important from an accessibility for all perspective.
