What RUclips Coaches WON'T Tell You
So basically they show a Photoshop tutorial to a random bunch of people and wonder why no one is watching, that does sound like a pointless exercise if YT approaches that way. Surely show it to people who are interested in Photoshop tutorials would be more of a help. Same with my Affinity Photo tutorials and being shown to Photoshop users, a totally pointless and virtually guaranteed immediate turn off, however good the video is. I guess that is why many of my videos do get watched but it takes 6 months or so for YT to work out the audience for them ? Luckily I just enjoy creating the videos and at some point they maybe watched
Very good advice. Build it and they will come. It just takes time. I think the most important thing is to keep having fun creating and stay focused on your core. Eventually the viewers will realize you've got something.
Thank you so much for this one Page. I needed this video. It was like sitting down with my best friend convincing me that I'm good enough for my channel. I sometimes struggle with accepting that my cooking abilities are good enough. Although I love cooking and baking and have done it for years, I doubt myself. Especially when people comment negatively. But I understand that there are nasty people out there who make it their mission to leave negative comments. Thank you, thank you. I am good at this!
I love your content! Imposter syndrome helped me have the courage to make RUclips videos. I come from a software developer background where imposter syndrome is rife. Many software people have it. We typically moved from company to company every 1-3 years, chasing the latest new thing. Every new job I started, everyday I went to work absolutely convinced that I was going to be fired today. My employer would eventually figure out that I did not know what I was doing. This feeling was there EVERYDAY for the first six months of every new employer. Of course, I was a hard worker and DID know what I was doing. Turns out, that is normal in the high-tech field. Most of us suffered from it. Much of it was because we were trying to do things that had never been done before. Great, scary, fun! When I finally decided to start a RUclips channel, I just told my audience where I was (rank beginner) and why that is good for them. Running my RUclips channel is the only "business" that I can start that does not terrify me completely to the point where I cannot function. This anxiety about starting a business is actually related to pre-verbal times in my childhood. Yes, I am getting lots of therapy! Keep up with the great videos! And thank you.
Aw what a great story, thank you for sharing it
Great advice thanks
You're welcome
The Ikea effect... love it... especially the cost saving that come along with the Ikea approach of building it yourself 😉. Great advice, thank you!
Sure thing! Glad you liked the episode
It occurred to me earlier that the standard growth path to channel monetization is for the audience to "Click, Watch, & Subscribe". Trying to gain all of the subscribers first is out of order, regardless of how they're gained, that is going to lead to undesirable outcomes.
That is a great insight and I agree
Trolls are probable those knuckleheads who drive on the roads like knuckleheads and say I don’t need stop for red lights, I don’t need to use signals for changing lanes, I don’t need to stay in my lane and not drive in breakdown lane in traffic. That’s what I think when I see trolls comment
Oh yes, I see lots of antisocial driving behavior
I had someone offer to help me get monetized a couple of days ago, I knew in my heart that My channel would never ever recover from that, I am happy to grow slowly and authentically.
Good on you! A lot of those shortcuts turn into dead ends...
Very interesting viewpoint! Thank you so much!!
So glad you enjoyed it!
I didn't even know this was possible. I don't have a channel yet but it seems to me that if you aren't getting real subscribers you probably aren't making good content and should use it as a lesson to improve your content.
Oh yes, there are companies that sell such things. And people apparently buy them. But it doesn't help as much as people think it will (and can actually hurt). And yes, I agree with what you've said here.
Hello page thanks for the chat💕NonnaGrace 🐓
Thanks for coming
Such a Great vlog. Thanks 👍
Thank you!
Thank you for saying this for the people in the back ❤
haha thanks -- I couldn't believe how ranty/fired up I got when my friend asked me about buying subs... I knew it was a sign I should make this episode
Nicely said! This is the reason I didn't let friends or family know about my channel. I really didn't want any "dead" subs. Normally friends and family don't watch as faithfully as you think unless you just bug the heck out of them. haha My husband (my biggest cheerleader) always says, "Be like the tortoise!" Have a great day! ❤
"Be like the tortoise" -- aw, I like that. Hope you have a great day too.
I like when you said put the reps in. RUclips does feel like working out doesn’t it? Lol I keep learning new things every day some days my brain hurts extra hard. Then some days a lightbulb goes off. It’s amazing the sort of tips and tricks you eventually notice
Very much so!
Oh man, I really wanted to buy some bots lol
😂
I don't know anyone who has bought subscribers! I like your lumpy plant pots! 😊
Aw thank you. :) As a potter, I can throw a little bit on the wheel, but I love the process of coiling and pinching handmade stuff (and yes, how lumpy they look, I think they're cute). I've seen some videos where people have bought them and shared the (disappointing) results. And yeah, my one friend was asking about my thoughts on it and I started ranting a bit and was like... ohhh, I should make an episode on this. haha
@@ByPageTurner 😄
It doesn't appeal to me. It feels very unsatisfying to buy instead of earn the accomplishment. I guess that is a part of the ikea effect.
Definitely sounds like IKEA effect.
great advice - don't fall into the loop of or temptation of chasing subs, likes etc, it won't be natural growth, be yourself and grow happily long term.👏🏼👏🏼💯💯
You said it!
Very well said. Even this week I have seen comments on other people's videos complaining that people should sub as well as watch, because subbing is free and there is no cost to the viewer. This unfortunately shows a lack of understanding that subscribers who aren't going to watch more of your videos are actually worse than useless and damage your channel. This can also happen if you do a major pivot. If you are lucky, people will unsubscribe. However, often they don't bother and just become dead subscribers which weigh your channel down. Thanks 😀 👍
Yes, I love it when people subscribe -- but I only want to do it if they're naturally motivated to do it. And your reasoning is spot on. Thanks.
It reminds me of the song whistle a happy tune. 💕NonnaGrace 🐓
That's a nice thought
Hi Page, seems like I watched this but listening again. 💕NonnaGrace 🐓
Thank you again
Hello Page, I really enjoy you content. 💕NonnaGrace 🐓
Thanks so much
One of my favorite expressions. It's my daily pep talk to myself. It also reminds me that I can get through the challenges and this moment shall pass.
Pep talks are important! And you're right -- this too shall pass.
Great advice. I found your channel in my feed after I’d couple of days ago. Such great advice here. Sorry to hear about the kitty. Every loss of a beloved pet hurts.
Aw thank you so much -- he was a great kitty.
Interesting points on losing subs. I had a sudden surge of subs last 2 weeks from 100 to 750, and it’s probably because my last 4 videos are more specific niche of my lifestyle. I think maybe a few of my earlier subs were gained through shorts that are not interested in my latest videos. So that’s why I noticed the last week I was gaining 25-50 subs a day, at the same time losing a few, because I was monitoring the numbers. It makes sense, sometimes even myself I have lost interest in some channels and unsubscribed them. Thank you for sharing.
Glad to help! Yeah, that makes sense to me.
This video is an excellent example of how you organized content. You are inspiring me to start a channel. I am beginning to think of outlines.
Oh thank you so much. Yes, this episode's structure is a very good example. Glad to help.
Great point. Selfless goals can be the most rewarding.
Definitely!
Every video uploaded is a success.
That's a great way to look at it.
Helpful, optimistic and supportive and I love the way you break these things down. Cool!
I appreciate that. Thanks!
Oh my gosh! You hit the nail on the head. I so agree with all of it; however, I really identified with the talking to the camera or phone situation. When you first begin RUclips, you really don't know who you are speaking to. I still get a bit weirded out at first when I begin my videos, but I feel that will go away with practice. Thanks for the valuable insight. ❤
Oh yes! I'm used to it now but it was so weird at first
Awesome Page. Great Video! This is one of the questions I ask myself. Does my video provide any value to the viewer. if not, that idea goes out the window...Thanks again.
You're welcome!
Page, I love all of your videos!
That is so sweet, thank you
I know you had mentioned that you are waiting to get monetized. But your stories and advice is so good. You really dont need it. Your viewers would buy anything you sell us. lol your so relatable
Aw thank you so much! And the good news is I did meet the monetization requirements recently (I'll be talking about it in a future episode)! Thanks for the kind words
I get alot of "stage fright" even if it's just mainly me pointing my camera phone at myself. Bur faking it over time has lessened that feeling a bit. Thank you for another great video...im enjoying your content
Absolutely understand the stage fright! And thank you so much
Another good vlog. 👏👍 Fortunately, I'm not in front of the camera on my channel, but I film nature. And I'm still at the very beginning. 😊 What I'm currently struggling with is that I sometimes get really nice reactions and they also say that they have subscribed. And then you think that they really mean their positive comments. And I already know that one of them has posted the same comment on many channels. Just because they hope that you will become a member of their channel. And those are people who have no interest in my videos at all, but are only looking for followers. So they don't watch my new videos. I think that's such a shame. Sorry, it's a bit long. 😁 But would like to know your opinion on how to deal with this. Maybe you can make a video about this? Until now I have always returned visits and also watched 1 or more videos and left a nice comment but did not follow them. Or it must be something I really like. And of course not everyone is like that. There are of course also people who really mean it and also watch the videos. Just wanted to add that.
Hmm that's a very complex issue, I'll think on it. In general, please don't let others get you down. I do know it can be tough sometimes though and do struggle with it myself from time to time.
@@ByPageTurner Thanks for your response. I don't let this get me down. 😀😊 I like what I do so much. But I just think it's so sad.
As always, your video's give me insight into myself and what I am doing.
aw I'm so glad
Love this!
Thank you!
Both mindset and action go hand in hand. Action helps kickstart something that has a chance to be seen n improved. But mindset helps in providing an emotional fuel. And mindset change is needed to keep habit change sustainable. Great topic and coverage, Page!
Sure thing!.
I'd never heard that phrase until about a year ago and I never cared for it. 'Be it until you become it' has always been my go to 'growth from scratch' mantra. Between kindergarten and graduation, there are many growth goals that need to be reached. Self-doubts just tell me I haven't reached my full measure yet and exactly where I'm still lacking so I can focus on growing it.
Yeah, that's a good way of putting it for sure
I had a feeling this wouldn't be about actually lying and deceiving people, but yeah, I saw the phrase as deception. Great insight from you as usual.
Sure thing!
I love this!!!!
aw thanks
I'm definitely faking it 😂😂😂😂
girl, same 😂😅
I enjoyed this transparency in this topic; I continue to listen to your vids 💯
The car running off the road in your vid really demonstrates going viral too soon. Enjoying your videos 😊
I'm so glad!
RUclips, a.k.a. "University of RUclips". Learn to do anything!
Yesss! RUclips is honestly a pretty amazing place.
Hi! I'm being very talkative today. I enjoy your videos and would like to know more about your business and books. I started following you on Facebook and when I heard about Our Moving Castle, I jumped right in. You are well spoken and knowledgeable and seem to be truthful. Thank you. Now, dumb question: Other than equipment for video and software programs for editing, is there a cost/charge from RUclips for post a video/channel? I was trying to explain it to my husband the other day, but this was something that I did not know. Thanks! Don't stop making videos!
Aw you're so sweet -- I'm just getting back to your comments because yesterday was unusually busy for me. Thank you for all the interest in my work! Not a dumb question. No, RUclips doesn't charge creators anything for making a channel or uploading content to it. They do run some ads on your videos even when your channel isn't monetized (and that pays for their costs for serving out the videos, etc) -- and if you get to a certain level of activity on your channel (currently 1000 subscribers and at least 4000 watch hours over the past 12 months), they start splitting the ad money with you (55% to creator, 45% to them). But yes, you're correct -- things like camera equipment, special mics, certain editing software, etc, can cost money. Some people just shoot on their phone and use free editing software (like the free version of Davinci Resolve, Clipchamp, or iMovie). I shoot mostly on a GoPro and use Premiere Pro (but that's because I already had a license on it for doing book layouts and some writer marketing stuff, I didn't buy Adobe simply for editing). I will say that video editing does take some processing power, so typically it's easier/faster on a better computer. I had to get a better one because my old one couldn't handle it. But if you already have, for example, a good gaming computer, that might not be an issue.
